Our school has about 70 of these and they work pretty good.

Found this while troubleshooting my display adapter - Figured I'd share what I discovered, that not all high-resolution displays work with this adapter. I plugged into an older LG that worked just fine over cable at its native res that I can't remember at the moment, but the MS adapter wouldn't let me go above 1080p. I tried the adapter on two other displays (including an LG OLED TV) and the native resolutions worked without issue, all the way to 4k.

Probably EDID fuckery. You might be able to reflash the EDID on the TV with a fixed one, it was a common issue with older TVs.

Can you connect dual or even more screens using this setup? Aka 1 laptop, 2 monitors/TVs with each with their own MS Wireless Adaptor?

I have the Microsoft display adapter. I enjoy using and it works very well for me.

Has anyone tested how this Microsoft 4k adapter performs compared with the Miracast on Fire TV 4k Max or the latest Fire TV Cube?

Btw for the 4K version, if you set the resolution to 1920 x 1080, what is the refresh rate supported? In v2, it was 30 Hz only and I could only get 60 Hz at least when I reduced resolution to 1600 x 900. I was hoping for V3, since they must have increased the bandwidth and capabilities somehow to support 4K, 1080p @ 60 Hz might be supported?

Microsoft display adapter won't work on Galaxy S24+, But my sony Xperia xa2 works fine. The galaxy asks for a pass code when holding down the recognised device (MWA) but it just keeps failing to connect. Waste of a grand! Any ideas??

Yes, miracast is like a wireless HDMI connection.

Great video. I've been using the older wireless display adapter from Microsoft and it works pretty well for presentations and classes if you need that bit of mobility (for example, you ask students to ink something on a slide). I find however that if you don't need mobility. I prefer a wired video connection. It takes less battery, is far more reliable (especially on a busy university or corporate campus with lots of competing Wi-Fi signals) and has essentially no lag. And carrying around a short USB-C to HDMI cable is not much more difficult than carrying around the wireless adapter. It's also easier to set up. So I probably won't be upgrading to this one. And I certainly won't be "upgrading" to some system with proprietary connectors! Though I suppose Gadget Philosophy will have something to say about that!

If youre able to use a wired connection, then why are you even here? I dont mean to be rude, but its pretty obvious that you would want to use a wired connection….. these are pretty much specifically only for people who need Wireless, like me, who dont have any extra video ports on the gpu, and i dont have an igpu so i cant use usb ports for video. So to connect a third monitor to my Tower PC, a Wireless Hdmi like this one is necessary as its quite literally my only option to connect a third monitor to my PC. You should really understand this when commenting in a device. That this is actually necessary for some people, and that we would all obviously use a wired connection if we could. Just a bit silly to comment something like that, when this is specifically about a wireless hdmi, that people use because they need to, not just because they want to. If I could use a wired connection to begin with, then i wouldnt be here and wouldnt buy a wireless hdmi…..

So there is only one 'dongle' - it plugs into your display. Your computer or device connects to it without a dongle. Miracast uses a direct Wifi connection between your computer and the dongle. So it will work just like your Wifi works.

@@oztabletpc I believe this model has Miracast over Infrastructure network? In that case you can join the dongle to your wifi and then as long as you're connected to the same network (wifi or ethernet) you can cast to that device, no matter how far away you are...

Can you use it on a 4 monitor setup like I have at my shop? I pretty much use this pc for website design and searching on the net, sometimes I will play a game at 1080P but not much

I dont understand why doesn't Microsoft Windows create an interface to mimick chrome cast. Because used laptops are very cheap nowadays that it is possible to connect a PC or laptop to your TV without a chromecast. Microsoft should release a remote control for your PC or laptop to the TV with software to make it easier to nagivate your music, movies, streaming services etc. PC and laptops are so cheap it doesn't make sense for some people to buy a chromecast for $100. When you can have a fully working PC connected to your TV. But the software interface isn't provided to make it even more useful. Also this software would be useful with miracasting too to watch tv.

70 bucks is pretty cheap considering you get 4K and low latency on a wireless solution. Beats carrying HDMI dongles and cables around while traveling. Did you test it on a 4K TV?

Is there a way to create a short cut to connect to a particular display adapter. I have an environment where there are multiple PCs and multiple Microsoft Display Adapters. Each PC needs to connect to a particular adapter. Wanted a way to create a shortcut on each PC to connect to its assigned adapter. Yes, this is designed for presentation, not day to day work. You have to connect every time. Latency would not be a huge issue for Excel and Office apps though.

How do you get the "wireless display adapter app" on an android device? Also wondering if this would work on an iPhone (in addition to an android device) ?

Not sure that you can get the app on Android. The app is only needed to update the firmware and customize the adaptor. Not required to connect. And it could work with iPhone (Miracast is an open standard), but Apple don't allow it.

I want to write about my discovery with this product to help others out if you have issues Re-Connecting your pc with your monitor after disconnecting. What I mean is you've set it up, used it and decided to call it a day... but upon the next time you want to connect, your PC cannot 'find' your adapter to connect again. When I set this up through the app on my pc there is an option on the far left side of the screen that says "Network" (you can see that at 4:15 in this video) and when you click on it, the app will explain you can use your wifi to enhance the performance of the connection. That "option" is the cancer that causes this imo. If you decide to click on "Network" and add a wifi, the adapter now looks to the wifi for a connection ONLY. So, in my theory, the problem when trying to reconnect the next day is an issue because the computer, whether using the app or not searches for a direct NON-WIFI connection to the display adapter. However.... once linked through the wifi via set-up, the adapter doesn't search for the computer organically, it searches for the computer via the wifi. Hence, the adapter searches for the computer via wifi and the computer searches for the adapter organically and not through the wifi, hence they will never find each other. It's dumb but it's true. It took me many trial and error attempts messing around with various things to discover this. The solution?? Press and hold the button on the display adapter (while plugged in) for 10-15 seconds to reset it. Try to pair it with your computer and they WILL find each other again. Then NEVER use "Network" (wifi-asist) again and you'll never have this problem. TL;DR Don't use the "Network" option on the app. It screws up future pairing sessions with the adapter.

How many screen display can be connected to the host with this gadget? I plan to make 3 or more monitors setup

It's not that it's not compatible with Apple. Miracast is an open and free standard that anyone could use. Almost all Windows and many Android devices support Miracast. However, Apple don't support open standards unless they can corrupt them and make them worse (qi and USB-C PD charging are some of many examples). There are solutions that do both Miracast and the proprietary closed system Airplay. Actiontec for example have some good enterprise solutions that do both, as well as Chromecast (another proprietary dead end).

How well does it cast videos? Does the audio and video stream decent and does it stay at a steady 30 frames per second?

we use these at our school and they are great , when the pc is running heavy you do get fps drops but its works well with playing music and videos and we do that allot at a school , 33 of these

You'd need to use a something like the ActionTec Screenbeam devices as the have a USB-A input and can pass through the interface wirelessly. The Miracast protocol does provide for keyboard and mouse pass through.

Aint it possible to stream the audio through the hdmi input also? If you want to stream youtube videos for example this would fix the latency problem that your sound doesnt fit to what your seeing which is very annoying

Yes, this is a WiFi technology, so you'll need WiFi at both ends. It's technically possible to carry the signal over Ethernet, but to establish the connection requires WiFi.

I think that the answer is very obvious, but I still going to ask: It´s compatible with MAC (those with HDMI adapter for thunderbolt or similar) devices as MACBOOK PRO, AIR, ETC?

If you run Windows on your Mac it might work.. But Apple don't do open standards unless they can corrupt them for thier own benefit. So no, Apple don't support this on Mac.

I have the old one and it worked awesome. I just got the 4k wireless adapter and I am not able to see video from Dish Network, HBO, or Netflix. I'm using a Samsung Note 20 Ultra. The old display adapter worked great but the 4K adapter doesn't work. Is anyone having the same issue?

@@mathewawoyale8850 I figured out the problem, you have to download the app to update the device from the Microsoft store from the computer. Then you could go into the app and change a setting. I forgot which one it was but it was pretty easy, and then it'll work again

Microsoft 4K Wireless Display Adapter only provided 30Hz for my 60Hz LG monitor.

How do you think it would perform while watching sports? Contemplating purchasing so I don't have to connect and move my laptop around to watch sports on my television.

Depends on the WiFi environment. Since Miracast uses a direct WiFi connection, competition from other WiFi networks comes into play.

No, Miracast requires you to have a WiFi adapter in your device, but it does not require an internet connection.

Hi, thanks for the video. I plan on relocating our noisy desktop PC to another room about 30 feet away, then sending the signal to a monitor at my wife's desk. Does anyone know about distance limitations? She mostly views spreadsheets, email, and browsing. The PC runs windows 10 pro.

Miracast is WiFi, so it would most likely work. But it's not really designed for this scenario, more for presentation. It's not a replacement for a cabled solution.

That Adapter outputs only 1080p on my HP 27qx ... thats just sad. I have bought the 4k Version 1942 but i cant get it to cast 4k onto my Display.

The output is driven by the laptop, not the receiver. Did you try upping the resolution on the PC once connected?

This adapter only supports 4k @ 30Hz. You may need to drop the refresh rate down when you're connected and then the 4k option should appear.

Ok, cool. Then it's possible that your WIFI card does not support Miracast, but you could most likely get around that by upgrading the WIFI module or, by plugging in a USB WIFI card.

@@mahmoudghaffarian6017 Sorry, I do not have a Surface Pro 4 to test with. Miracast is an open standard, and the Pro 4 is compatible with it. You might not get 4k from the Pro 4, but it should still be able to connect.

The Microsoft wireless display adapters are Miracast adapters.

I have this for couple of years. Trash! only transmit hdr even if you are on sdr,, the colors are very bad because of the forced conversion, like radioactive.

"... only Apple folks know." is a comment from a closed minded individual. I hear that so often from other technicians, and the are stuck. I work with Apple, Microsoft, Google, etc and I choose the right tool for the right job for my customers. Yea Apple might be a little tighter fisted when it comes to open source software, but remember Apple didn't invent the virus. Peter Nortons software only ran on Windows OS for decades. I've been using Microsoft since MS-DOS and Microsoft has its place in business and homes. I've also used Apple, for specific jobs, way before they adopted the UNIX OS and Intel CPU's. I suffered through the Apple Motorola chip and Microsofts crappy OS's like Vista & Millennium and now I'm installing Chromebooks left and right because they are so CHEAP. There's nothing wrong with being a diehard fan of a specific product line, but if you're gonna preach "open source" keep your mind open as well.
