Adam Savage Visits Ghostbusters: Afterlife's Art Department!
Ғылым және технология
While in Calgary during the filming of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Adam stops by the production's art department and speaks to supervising graphic designer Marie Massolin and art director Bill Ives to learn how graphic designers create all the signage, logos, and other artwork needed to populate the movie's varied locations. From restaurant menus to faux vintage street art, here's a glimpse of some of the intricate worldbuilding that happens behind the scenes to help set dressers and prop builders make the the film feel real.

More Ghostbusters content please! It would be so cool to speak to Steve Johnson from the original Ghostbusters as well! Or a joint Arjen Tuiten and Steve Johnson event to compare prop and monster making methods from the 80's and today!

A good friend of mine is an art director and her penmanship is so good it's other-worldly! Must have something to do with a brain that's wired for attention to detail.
Part of me is completely freaked out by the art department managers' vertical writing and part of me is completely amazed.

When I was at school they made us write with fountain pens, as a leftie my hand would smudge the ink so I learned to write in the same manner.
I love Adam's energy. Watching this makes me feel like a kid again
I love graphic design and typography! Marie was lovely, her enthusiasm and her work are wonderful. :)
My backpack and water bottle made a cameo in the background! 😂 So surreal to see Bill & Marie on screen lol. Still one of the best productions I have gotten to work on in the art department, and it was great meeting the Tested crew! Cheers 😄

Show's the kind of care and respect the folks behind the camera wanted to show the franchise. And for that we should reward them with our wallets so they know to KEEP doing this.
Man it must’ve been agonising sitting on these for so long waiting to be able to post them!

You can dowload them and burn them on a DVD-R. That's what I do (for my favorite movies) with all the stuff released on KZread that aren't on the Blu-rays. Lots of teasers, trailers, Special VFX reels, and promos, music videos are left out.

Loving these behind the scenes videos about Ghostbusters: Afterlife, seeing the details behind the screen magic we don't normally get to see. I hope you'll be doing more of these with other films too.

Sony should have made a deal with you to put all this stuff on the bluray, these behind the scenes videos are great.
As a concept artist this is my favourite video yet. The graphics and ephemera that flesh out the world of film is as always, absolutely fascinating.
Crazy art girl... I'm not supposed to fall in love again. Such a talented group doing remarkable work.
Such a great movie and full credit to the props department, infact the whole behind the scenes did such a great job to keep the nostalgia of the original Ghostbusters
She sounded so excited to talk to him
Thanks for covering this! This is the one reason I became a designer! I haven't yet had the opportunity to work on a film but some day, hopefully!
i loved these BTS, showing the invisible people we dont really apreciate when these movies are make, and the passion they had doing. this whole series has been a gem.
Only just watched Afterlife (was waiting on my watch buddy) so it was agonizing to hold off on these so I didn't get spoiled. The utter infectious joy that Adam has with these artists is so awesome and genuine. Exactly the smile I needed :)
This is so cool! As an artist, I'm always trying to peep the designed background items and analyze all of the signage and set pieces and it's really cool to meet the folks that do that for a living!!
Wow, she's left handed. Great to see someone turn out such creative work in a right-handed world.
I totally love the enthusiasm you bring Adam.
What an absolutely incredible nerd she is! And I mean that as the _highest_ of compliments.
please tell me theirs a video of them cutting that barn moving it and putting it back together!!
Adam.....thank you so much for doing these behind the scenes videos!!!
Adam is so warm, I wish I had his way with people.
This was so awesome and marie was a delight. These is honestly the type of special features i love.
Marie's notebooks were amazing! I'm a fellow lefty so know the thing of sometimes having to write at odd angles but writing at 90 degrees as if she were writing in columns is soooo cool!
That was awesome! Thanks for sharing Adam!
This, this what a BTS is supposed to look like. More please!
After watching the review of the proton pack video, I had to watch the movie. Thanks Adam I really enjoyed the movie, brought back childhood memories.
She. Writes. Down. That's ..my brain just melted. That would make keeping within the lines so much easier. Even when there are no lines. I hope someday she gets to publish them or otherwise preserve them for posterity. To paraphrase Indy, those booklets belong in a museum.
Favorite part was the discussion about Marie's notebook! Very cool!
Thanks Adam
I love this woman's details! The notebooks are great!
as a fellow left-hander, Marie Massolin thank you well done for having lovely handwriting! Amazing work btw.

That would be too cool.
I'm so jealous of those notebooks. Everytime I attempt to start a notebook the first few pages go great but then it slowly turns into a glorified bound "post-it" note. It's just a compilation of lists.
Adam keeps finding things to film! Wow!
This was great! I love these BTS deep dives!
How they took a barn that was dilapidated and falling apart and moved it just blows my mind.
A colleague of mine who is left handed also writes straight down. It was how she did not get ink on her hand. Very cool to see someone else who also does that.
I wish all these behind the scenes videos would have been put on the Ghostbusters Afterlife Blu-ray!

Hey, Adam! When I was going to college many, many years ago, I saw in a display in the Science Building a beautiful exact model of HG Wells' time machine. I would love to see you tackle that!
Amazing video Sir!
Man, she seems really cool and talented.
The amount of details that comes into it is simply crazy. Just thinking about being in charge of all of those decisions gives me anxiety
Franco Albertan you can hear it in her accent. Salut Marie!
She is delightful😊
How do you stay so healthy Adam! I'm barely over 30 and already feel like I'm closer to 90.
Light flickered @12.05 talking about Egon's pack - nice coincidence!
As a lefty my mind is blown lol sideways writing is a great idea! i ALWAYS had ink and pencil all over my left hand in school lol thankfully nowadays all my writing is on a keyboard :P i wonder if shes a gamer and has hacked the best layout for hotkeys for a lefty :P i use to be in a wow guild that was trying to push realms best and i actually got black listed NOT because i had cerebral palsy and my voice was different or my age but BECAUSE i was left handed lol apparently in a lot if not all video games theres a disadvantage in having your mouse on left hand, i tried to train myself to new keybinds but even though i was beating the top guy at duels it just didnt feel comfortable and i put it back lol.. oh btw if you wonder " how do they know? " they can tell by the way your character moves, rightys have 6 movements and leftys have 4, even if u use your mouse with the 4 arrow keys you can tell when someone is either not using q e or they are left handed xD they asked and i didnt know it was a thing so i said yes and ya... couldnt adapt to their standards lol maybe its just me and the cerebral palsy but theres no way i can use my right hand for the left keyboard without losing so much dps/heal, ect i have better mobility and access to keys using arrow keys + mouse for now :P id love a keyboard with the 4 arrow keys + two extra on both sides of the up arrow for side to side movement... might config a num pad or something if i ever get back into the game lol
Love those notebooks! Whenever I get a new notebook/sketchbook for a project, I always try to keep it as neat as possible, but it ends up turning into a mess of scribbles and rushed handwriting! Great video!
I would really love to learn more about the drone and photogrammetry technique they talked about! Sounds amazing!
She is amazing 😻 and beautiful 😍
Just waiting on the blu-ray to show up, so I can finally see the movie
OK, this is Adam pitching a new show idea, right? More of this please.
Graphic designers who can actually draw have SUCH a leg up on the competition, often I think without realizing it. I do it professionally and I can't draw for shit lol
I always wanted to work for a Movie just once. See the how movies were made in the early 90's just got me excited. I know it's chaos but fun to make things on computers and then make it real. BUT there's that Chaos problem. Always under pressure. Then there's problem with steady work. Like the Gaming Industry they use you then throw you away.
hahah she belongs in ghostbusters! awesome
I got a happy about fonts and kerning - yes I know typesetters. ;)
I too, am left-handed. And there ends any and all similarities with the incredible talent she has.
Hi Adam, as a left-handed person these notebooks from Marie are awesome. Please revisit her and dive into them I am fascinated not only about the content I briefly saw but I need to know more, way more about vertical left-handed writing
Her notebook game is on fire🔥🔥
You would think that it would be easier to have the Ecto 1 @ end of movie quality first and then shoot the scenes in reverse order to add aging to it over time until you end up with the barn find version. it's far easier to add layers to something than it is to take them away.
Holy crap did I just see the Pantone color guides for offset press printing?
I’d love to see the art of goozer and the updated costume I looked incredible
I'm also left handed and turn the page sideways to write! It's not just me!
@benvoliothefirst

I'm left handed and you guys are weird, but if it allows you to be this creative, I fully support you
Her notebooks are like the grail diary from Last Crusade....I hope they diligently work to make sure such things are preserved.
I enjoy these behind the scenes more than i enjoyed the actual movie. Why couldnt they have put this much effort into the script or storyline?
7:00 It's so funny to see how many pros that rely on writing things down use steel Zebra pens
I absolutely love how through Adams whole Afterlife series everybody always refers to Ghostbusters canon by just the '84 movie. It almost seems like Jason called the whole crew together for a meeting and said- "Ok people!, I'm only going to say this twice, and only twice! Vigo never existed... Say it with me now.. Vigo never existed!.. OH! And slime is not pink! OK! let's do this! Take your positions on set! Now that's real acid, so I want to see goggles people!" Yeah, yeah I know.. Lame. But I saw an opening ( a meandering, roundabout, rapidly deteriorating opening) to drop a Simpsons reference. And damn my weakness all to hell, I did..
... piękna kobieta 😍🥰
Why building of the 84 film.. what happened to the 89??
I Could spend an hour just looking through her note books
Was it you in the earthquake scene in a hardware shop ?
'These are like the notebooks from Se7en!' Adam saying things that should be 'internal dialogue' only!
Quaint to see them all in an office to draw artwork. It would be surprising if they actually paid to relocate all those people to the location, built up a temporary office, then tore it all down. The prices are all strangely 2020 era even though the text is 1930's era.
Anyone know what kind of books she is using?
Adam tamed his hair!! :-)
