Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Lathe Chuck Rolling Rack!

Ғылым және технология

"Measure One, Cut Twice" and "Measure Once, Swear Twice" Ts and stickers here: teespring.com/stores/adam-sav...
As Adam is using his lathe more these days, he's also upgrading it with new accessories like additional lathe collet chucks. And to store these massive steel parts, Adam makes a rolling rack stand that can hold all of his chucks for quick access and cleaning. It's Adam's first One Day Build using sheets of 1-inch plywood, and a construction that comes together with just tabs and slots!

Great idea. How about a small groove on the wooden support, just past the diameter of the largest chuck, that would fit a clear plastic "cake" cover. No need to cut larger shelves. The groove doesn't need to go all around, as the seal doesn't need to be hermetic, the only issue is dust and swarf falling from above.

To me this is one of your best... not because it's any better than any of your other master minded builds but because it's one that (at the rite moment) helped me out with making space. I built a new cart for all my power tools and I decided that putting them all on wheels like you did . I decided that it would not only help in moving them out of the way when I need the space but I made it wide and low to the ground for a special reason. My new power tools cart now fits perfectly under my work table so all my tools are away from sight like it's a regular bedroom!. I live in a one room apt. and my living space is also my work space When ever I have free time to build "play" (make stuff) my bed is hidden and all you see is tools and woodworking supplies but at the end of the day I vacuum around my workspace (a used 6 foot marble kitchen counter top held up by two 24" wide bathroom cabinets 30" high) Now, My new 24" wide cart being only two feet high, fits in the legroom space under the workstation and I even put a plastic cover to keep it all out of sight when my workstation decided to be a bedroom. The problem now is how do I explain the layer of sawdust in my bedroom when people come over and there is no sing of woodworking because all my tools are out of sight ??? I decided... if anyone askes I'll tell them "Winston did it ! not me" then let them try to figure it out! LOL

I’ve had one of those collet chucks for my lathe for about a year now. I’m a gunsmith and absolutely love using it for making small parts. Especially parts that also require milling because I also have 5C collet blocks for holding round parts in my mill.

Milling machine ring light in a search engine turns up loads of them. Sometimes they're called sindle light or quill light too. But milling machine ring light seems to net all of them.

If you have a 3d printer, you can build your own version using "angel eye" led rings for cars (120mm diameter IIRC). Few bucks on eBay etc, and print a housing you like. There are a few designs on thingiverse, but I did my own to make sure it'd fit the led ring I used. 12v power from an old router wall wart. You could also ghetto rig the led ring on in any number of ways....

Ok I didn't think I needed a milling machine for wood working until I watched this. That was probably one of the coolest tricks I have seen to do that. On a side note with all of the Myths and misinformation going around today regarding COVID19, have you considered doing a myth busters special? Seems like it would be performing a great service to educate the masses.

I can see some nice clear acrylic lids over the chucks. The issue is that there isn’t enough room in its current form to add some kind of hinged lid. A clear case around the entire stack would also work. Something simple that just slots in and can be pulled of would work.
