Adam builds his first ever Gundam model (aka Gunpla)! In partnership with Bandai Namco Collectibles, Bandai Spirits, and the Gundam Online Expo 2021, Adam and the Tested team put together the incredible PERFECT GRADE UNLEASHED RX-78-2 GUNDAM model kit, admiring its beautiful interior mechanical frame design and iconic exterior Gundam armor. Adam is stunned by the detail of the model's parts and the precision of the pieces that satisfyingly snap-fit together!

“Chain molding”, by which each piece is stepped into the casting process. Hardest durometer plastics first cast and strategically coated with release agent. Then oriented into the secondary piece’s mold for casting a functional joint. They revolutionized even the ways that THEY developed years ago. Mind you, it’s all being processed under high heat AND temps.

"They make the building experience so pleasurable" That's it, that's the joy of gunpla. People are so in love with building it they keep adding stuff like scribing (adding more deep lines), repainting, adding extra parts (kitbash), making body part longer or shorter, adding electric parts and more. It's just that addicting.

Even if he's amazed with the complexity and quality of the engineering, I wonder what's his reaction gonna be when he gets into more "simplistic" grades, like Real Grade or even High Grade, that are not only smaller but much more simplified (High grades don't even have inner skeletons) and still manage to achieve nice levels of poseability and detail. I am litterally building this kit as i type this, probably watched this video 2-3 times in the past, but i'm part way through phase 3 and had to rewatch this video to share the amazement i'm feeling. Its my first PG, having built many many other kits in the past, Mg, Rg, Hg, No Grade, RE, you name it. Out side of Gunpla, i've build every kind of model you can imagine, from wargaming mini's, to military kits, tanks, planes, trucks, ships, to model cars, space ships, wooden sailing ships with all the rigging and sails, litterally been building and painting models for 23 years, and i can't say that anything has ever competed with the feeling i'm getting applying all those additional "metal" parts to the inner frame, every piece i add bows my mind. I'm sitting in my workshop/studio, that has just about every kind of tool a model builder could want, collected over 2 decades, and to think that i am getting this much fun out of this kit and all i am using (so far) is a pair of flush cutters, a modeling knife, a few sanding sticks and a pair of tweezers. Of course i am going to pannel line the kit and apply all the decals, I also plan on doing some weathering, but i can't bring myself to do too much custom work to such an amazing kit. Might be the only PG i ever get, and for the record i would never have got it for myself, but my partner got it for me last week, for my 33rd birthday, i know, best GF ever right. God i would love to do battle damage or custom paint, but geeze, thats almost like grafitti on such an amazing kit. I would always recommend 5 MG's over 1 PG, but that being said, if you ever get the chance to build one of these bad boys, you will not be disapointed!

In exchange for the cool engineering, though, those old RG kits' joints were prone to loosening significantly after a few years. They can be tightened up using the usual methods, but still. The other problem is that the plastic they use is a lot less resilient than the rest of the kit, meaning some paints can and will eat through it, if you like painting the frame. One thing to both love and hate about Bandai is their willingness to take on risks when it comes to engineering. Anyone who built a Real Grade Zeta, which can transform from robot to jet without swapping parts for no reason other than to prove it could be done at that scale, knows what I'm talking about.

I only started doing gunpla about a year and a half almost 2 years ago and it is just the building and the beauty of the engineering and the way that it moves the tiny sticker work how precise you can be and in the end the product is hours an hours of hard work for something so simple yet feels so amazing and that’s the beauty of gunpla to me! I have never seen any of the Gundam shows and still love building these models! Then with all the unbelievable customization on these things it truly is a work of wonder!

I think GunPla in general is not Expensive, Ive been building for the past 17 years and the price still hasnt change much. You can buy a decent High Grade kits for one week worth of lunch money. Or on Average you can buy 1 Master grade a month. In a Few years you can have 100+ of Kits.

I'm coming here way after the fact even though I missed the boat on the first wave of comments because nobody has explained the leg inner frame correctly. The leg inner frame is molded in sequence in ABS plastic, which is semi-crystaline and only bonds to itself. The second plastic is in Polypropylene which is fully crystalline and also only bonds to itself. This creates working joints without having to have radically different thermoset temperatures because the two plastics chosen simply don't cling to each other. No additional coating of release agent is required at all, it just uses the plastics' innate properties.

Co-injection and 'in mold assembly' has been in use for decades. Toothbrushes were the first examples I worked with. Then came hard plastic knobs with the rubber surround. Those molds rotated internally between two/three injection barrels. The 'in mold assembly' was performed by pulling 'gates' allowing the different barrels to inject at different times. One of the most challenging aspects of 'in mold assembly' was shrinkage. We manufactured dash vents. Nylon blades, polypropylene body and neoprene finger grip.

@@stevewest5397 The models have been so good for so long that back in the day they literally saved the entire franchise from cancelation. The original series wasn't a huge hit when it first was airing, but the models were such massive successes with older audiences that it led to a full re air and eventually the compilation movies that did end up being huge hits. And this led to Zeta Gundam getting greenlit, and the franchise became a monster from there. So the models are as essential to Gundam as the shows are!
