Adam Savage Behind the Scenes at Wētā Workshop Unleashed!
Ғылым және технология
Back in 2020, Adam visited Wētā Workshop as they embarked on their most ambitious project yet: a sprawling exhibition showcasing the special effects artistry that Richard Taylor and his team are known for-an immersive imagining of Wētā Workshop itself. Tested embedded with Wētā Workshop as they were in the process of building the enchanting environments of "Wētā Workshop Unleashed", documenting the collaborative design process, problem-solving, and hard work it takes to put something of this scale together.

There's something so bittersweetly nostalgic but also ominous about anything filmed in early 2020

Just listening to the explanation of the way the Weta team have planned out the experience is enthralling, and would love to see the finished product, though I doubt I'll personally get the opportunity while it's up.
Love the picture of Adam in "Fred Dagg" costume on the Horror wall. A small detail that is possibly only noticed by Kiwi viewers.
I went there for a school trip a few weeks ago! It was great, and I even saw adam’s face lol
I was creeped out when I was at unleashed and was looking at the synthetic Adam Savage that's sitting part way through it. I went with my work social club last year. It's really interesting watching this and seeing what parts made it from here with or without further changes.
totally worth a trip half way around the world this, this is what i've been saying for years! we NEED museums like these, all around the world. maybe even in the very town where a movie were shot. would bring huge amount of tourists, just for that one thing. places where we can preserve these priceless masterpieces, on the same level as the Mona Lisa! personally, i would travel around the world, to each spot, every 2nd or 3rd year.
Weta is amazing. I went there when my daughter got married in 2013. I actually got to meet Peter Jackson while in a tour of the workshop. It was an amazing experience! Thanks for sharing Adam. Happy days and model on! 😎🇨🇦
I'm in London UK. I watched this. Sent a message to a Friend in Auckland.......they went.......all that within 48 hours. thanks Adam 😊
Yet another reason to visit New Zealand!
Been there and it's amazing. Currently thinking of going again next weekend and taking the fantasy workshop that they have going on for school term break.
I never imagined I'd be as enthralled hearing an exhibit described without actually seeing it. This is so cool!!

And this is why Weta Workshop and Weta Digital are the absolute best at what they do. They don't only think about the disparate parts of the whole that they are working on. They visualize the whole first and keep that in mind while creating the parts. To Weta, as a whole, narrative is the most important part of what they do. If they don't understand the narrative that drives what they're making, how can they, properly and accurately, make parts to service that narrative? They really are Artisanal Geniuses down there at Weta.
That sounds amazing! A shame I most likely won't ever get a chance to see it, would be cool if it could eventually be turned into some kind of VR experience for those who can't visit in person.
WOW!!!!! What an amazing place this will be!! To see and hear your excitement as he shared all of the pieces with you drew me in and wrapped me in the experience with you. Thank you Adam!!!!
Just by listening how it is laid out my mind is blown!
I definitely want to see the full Adam walkthrough reaction video.
The constant switching of scale is a great idea.
Now I’m really excited to see the finished product 👍
Happy Birthday Adam, all the best 🍻🎉🎁
I went to Weta Unleashed recently, I enjoyed it but I really wish they included all the stuff he described, there must have been some budget cut backs. I did get a surprise when I saw the very lifelike Adam mannequin. Also, look out for the Savage Industries sticker in the foyer wall mural.
Awww, MAN! My eyes watered and I squeed, at how AMAZING some of those scenes are gonna feel, walking into them! I've just gotta be happy for everyone who will get to experience it. Thank you for showing us this behind-the-scenes look. (smiles with single tear because am broke af, no way to pay for a trip)
This looks like an absolutely amazing experience/exhibit. I know the three "movies" are only for the event, but I think it would also be very cool in a few years to see them finished on the big screen. P.S. to Adam, I love watching what you do. I also love listening to you talk about things you have experienced. In a strange way it's like watching my dad working on his models (thought he rarely finished the bigger ones :) ). He's been gone almost seven years now and watching you makes me miss him more and less all at the same time. Keep doing what you're doing, you inspire us all. Thank you.
I hope Weta is able to take some of their stuff on mobile exhibit at some point.
This sounds absolutely amazing. Can't wait to see a walk-thru. Wish I could do it in person.
This is going to be so awesome. I am in love with the concept. Thanks for showing us!
I wouldn't even know that it's a thing if it wasn't for this video. Just visited, it is super cool!
Thank you, my dear. What a lovely gift, sharing all this for those of us cannot travel.
What an experience this would be. It would be great if they could do a virtual tour much like the DAVID BOWIE IS exhibit. It's really incredible, and great for those of us who may not have the opportunity to see the exhibit in person.
That is definitely something I would love to see in person.
This sounds like an absolute dream. Already wanted to pop over to NZ but this is really adding to the pull.
This sounds amazing... I wish it wasn't so far away from me.
I know it would never happen, but man I would give damn near anything to see that exhibition in person.

@@goob8945 absolutely. Weta are super god damn talented, and I wouldn't doubt the movie would look nothing short of amazing. But if you watch the interviews from some of the evangelion DVDs, you'll straight away realize those dudes had absolutely no clue what to actually do with Eva, and had such a poor understanding of it.
Lucky me, I live here. Great exhibition.
ahhhh!! so envious. i want to do that so bad.
Weta really is a Mecca for model makers. I can’t wait to go. Thanks for sharing this 😊
I went to see this a few weeks ago, and it's awesome
Hmm definitely worth jumping across the puddle to see this! NZ just opened up post-covid too!
Pretty sick that you guys got to see something I’ve always wanted to go and visit for myself. Which was Weta Workshop. I might have to go someday. lol
This exhibit has been open a while now. I’ve been through it and it does not disappoint. If you’re in Auckland, it’s a must-see. And yes, Adam’s head is there as a gory prosthetic.
On the bucket list.
im from west Auckland still have not seen this, really need to get around and going to see it
Oooh, WILD! A video from the Before-Time 😮
as with everything WETA, totally and completely epic 😲👌
Cool. Reminds me of James Gurney's "Dinotopia". So VERY cool.
I wish this was in the US so amazing
Thanks.
This is incredible, I have to come to New Zealand one day, I simply have to! When does this heavenly place open to the public?
Considering how much Adam loves the idea of immersive experiences, I would love to see him react to and comment on an experience at the Star Wars starcruiser hotel. I went back in March and had my mind blown at how involved it was, I wasn't ready for that level of immersion. Costumes, set design, interweaving story lines and game play, animatronics, and animatronic costumes! A few practical effects on the ship I had never seen implemented in real life anywhere else, I think Adam would be just a kid in a candy store.
Are we finally gonna see these Weta videos from early 2020?

Just visited the experience this morning in Auckland.. It's a bit different from the original explained in the video but a great time, none the less
I would totally watch Fauna, the movie. I like the premise.
Damn, now I have to visit auckland! 😁
We NEED a walk through video of the finished exhibition.
So basically it’s going to be an Weta fantasy camp. Sounds pretty cool
I'm getting a real "Weta meets Meow Wolf" vibe here. Were they influenced by House of Eternal Return or any of the immersive environment stuff they pioneered?
This is like geek-ception. Experiencing Weta Workshop by experiencing a fake Weta Workshop which shows their skill in showing their skill. Beyond awesome concept.
Disneyworld for Makers? YES PLEASE
1:38 “Gentlemen you can’t fight here, this is the War Room!”
damn thats gonna be a mind melt
I've been in skytower before, curious what Weta deed to the place in a good way
I love how he mentions "Meet the Feebles" right off the bat.
LOVE the sticker at 1:20
First time I've ever thought there might possibly be a reason to travel somewhere. But maybe they'll install it on a surplus air craft carrier so it can sail all over the world :-).
I went to Auckland last month but it was not open
Guess I'm going to New Zealand then.

Time to book a trip to Aukland. Too bad I'm broke.
Did the Make Believe Experience already open?
💚💙
@3:40 Thumbs up for acknowledgement of "Meet the Feebles", one of my favourite, most messed* up, movies I've even seen. *Only using that word to keep the comments "clean". The "other" word is FAR more appropriate for that movie.
I am both sad, and angry, but I will never get to experience this exhibition. Is there any chance - on any hemisphere - that they will make a virtual VR headset experience of this?
Did u come to newzeland yay
Adam visits his Mecca 👍😆
When I hear "war room", Dr Strangelove comes to mind: "Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is a war room!"
why is there a picture of Adam on the story board at 1:18? edit: NM 🤣
They could make a bomb diggity escape room.
18:08 - I wonder if they would still do all this, and if so, how (if at all) it would be different, if Weta was a worker-owned co-op, with a democratic decision making process internally. Like, it seems like at least this person you're interviewing is pretty excited about the project even being Richard's thing. I just wonder... what else might they create, if they could?

An internal democratic decision making process for stuff like this (nitty gritty details), seems like an amazing way to get 1/100th of the amount of work done compared to a traditional top down structure.

@@poopfartlord9695 it's not like this has to mean a vote on every single last detail. People can decide for themselves whether or not to drive a screw in. :-P
They call it the "War Room" because that's where they have the Big Board, and because there's no fighting in there.
Been from NZ, we just push the boundies in tech - others think 'it 'can't be done' - NZ, ' hold my beer' we can do this'
I had to stop watching, this looks soooo cool but I cant get to new Zealand damnit!

what if you go behind the scenes at Weta and its still a FX shop but all the work is done by giant 10 foot long flightless crickets? You try to ask them about industry gossip and effects tricks and they're all CHICHICHICHIHCHICHICHICHIHCHI
imagine Adam bouncing up and down to NOT TELL ANYONE about what he learned about the Weta Project years before anyone knew about it.
you should have put a spoiler warning!
Hi everyone. could somebody please tell me about a MAKER forum that is well visited other than the RPF. As the RPF is (like the name implies) only for Replicas it is impossible to engage in general things.
