20 years of Middle-earth | Behind-the-scenes at Wētā Workshop

Фильм және анимация

20 years ago, we witnessed the thrilling conclusion to an epic tale that audiences had eagerly followed in cinemas across the world-a tale we had been helping to craft for over seven life-changing years.
Despite one's imaginations, it is often challenging entirely envisioning the future. Who could have imagined that a project starting out in just a few small warehouses would grow and evolve into such a magnificent saga, enjoyed by millions of fans worldwide?
The result is a legacy of art and storytelling that continues to be appreciated and celebrated even now. And, although we may have expressed this sentiment many times before, it does not diminish its value: we are honoured to have had the opportunity to contribute to such a beloved tale.
In order to share our joy with fans worldwide, please enjoy this collection of fond memories from our days spent sketching, sculpting, exploring, painting, crafting, creating, and, most importantly, dreaming within the vast world of Middle-earth.

No movie trilogy has ever surpassed Lord of the Rings in my opinion. The incredible cast and crew, the love for the story, the artwork, the perfect blend of CGI and practical costumes, miniatures and effects. Weta did an incredible job with bringing a fantasy world to life! Thank you, everyone involed for the hard work and sharing these memories!

I was living in NZ when the films were being made. Had been there for five wonderful years, and returned to the UK just before Fellowship was released. It was such a difficult time in my life and I took great solace in that film. I went to see it five times at the cinema and have seen the whole trilogy countless times since. They are so deeply special and meaningful to so many people, I'm so profoundly grateful to everyone involved in making them.

The greatest trilogy of all time! Being a kid when they came out it was so exciting. I was the perfect age to be completely obsessed and blown away by the films. Watching RotK in the theater that Christmas was the greatest cinematic experience of my life. It was one if the rare times in life where something with sky high expectations actually lived up to the hype.

You certainly didn't have to be a kid to appreciate this epic, hell I'll wager 55 for was the perfect age to appreciate not only the movies but all that went in to making the movies. In fact, it is a timeless masterpiece for anyone over 15

I still believe that the 'bigatures' were the best decision made during production. Grounded everything in this physical, tangible way and was something that sadly the Hobbit Trilogy lacked and suffered for it.

Incredible practical work. I'm perfectly aware computers make everything easier for everyone involved but damn, I'm so glad I grew up through the last great era of perfect blending between hand made and digital made filmmaking. So proud of the incredible work you guys did, this will never EVER get out of style or age, at all.

did this have LOTR music initially but got claimed for copyright, so they muted it? or was it supposed to be silent. or are my speakers broken. regardless, I am so thankful that Weta Workshop handled LOTR. The best movies, made perfect by every aspect of production, and such a great group of people!
