At my local Pizza Hut if you ask for coke they'll give you pepsi without asking because they don't have coke. If they ask if it's okay, some customers will ask for water instead, their bill will be lower, and the waiter runs a higher risk of not meeting their quota. So it's pretty much common policy to give the customer something they didn't ask for in this case. I know it's not the same, but still dirty and underhanded. They pressure their wait staff so that they'll really push the customer into getting something they didn't really want, because they have quotas to fill.

I once ordered a veggie burger at an a&w. they gave me a chicken burger. when I asked the lady why, she said they didn't have any veggie burgers. so I asked for a refund, she replied with "can't you eat it anyway", I ignored her. so I got a full refund (I already had my fries before the burger arrived, so there's a bright side) . moral of the story, tell someone you don't have the item, else they might leave for inadequate service.

beyond just mislabeling, there were also a few fish species that get 'special' names for restaurants to make them sound more appealing. "chilean sea bass" is actually Patagonian Toothfish. "Red Snapper" does exist, but that technically refers to the atlantic version, while many places sell a breed from the pacific normally called the "rockfish" (renaming also lets them charge the red snapper price, which is higher, despite it not being the same quality of fish-just closely related). And if you ever ordered an "orange roughy"-congrats...you ate a Slimehead (the actual name and family name for that species). "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet"-but apparently the same fish won't be as good with a bad name?

Escolar is seriosly delicious, and you can eat up to six ounces before having negative digestive effects.. Sushi restaraunts will only sell this as "white tuna" along with other great tasting and high quality fish like yellow tail tuna.. Theres no way it would pass as red tuna (yellow fin being the most common).. If you just ask what kindof "white" tuna they are serving, your likely to get a truthfull asnwer as long as the server is knowledgable or asks the chef.. another popular "white" tuna is albacore, white is still quite tasty... Probably not litterally classified as tuna but it has kidof just ended up in that grouping for whatever reason.. Probably to help the customers understand the flavor profile.........

  • @Virtuoso80

Escolar is the super milky-white piece they give you. High-end places usually don't serve it. If you get your sushi from a cheaper place or the supermarket, that's usually when you get the imitation fish. Also, wild salmon is really easy to tell from farmed salmon when raw, it has a different color and a lot more flavor. Got to the fish market and look at the expensive salmon vs. the cheap salmon and you'll see the difference.

  • @kylebaryonyx9478

This is US-based; in other countries, the farmed salmon are actually given feed that contains krill, and the pigment that gives krill its pink colour is so easy to synthesize, they can produce it artificially and add it to feed that doesn't necessarily contain krill. This way, the tissues are naturally pink. Also, the feed is usually fish offal (the bits you don't want to eat, like the liver, stomach, and other organs), not chicken.

Interestingly the answer could be no. Humans make preconceptions about our environment before we even realize it. Brain scanning proves that if you gave someone food without telling them the brand they might not like it much, or not rate it any different to others. But if you then give them its brand they will instantly rate it higher, their own mind overrode their taste buds and told them that they liked it more. So if you expected a pink salmon and were handed the grey one your mind could have already decided to hate it and attribute every upset stomach gurgle you feel for the next week to that one plate of food.

+0IIIIII Was that Halloween candy you might have eaten last weekend deceptive? It would most likely just be sort of off-white sugar bits if it wasn't artificially colored. The appearance of food has an effect on the overall experience and I don't see why it's any different for salmon meat. As for wild vs farmed salmon: These days farmed salmon does not seem to contain any more mercury or other pollutants than wild. (reference: www.doh.wa.gov/CommunityandEnvironment/Food/Fish/FarmedSalmon ). There are negative environmental effects to fish farms and and it's a balancing act between those and over fishing of wild fish populations. Both forms of fish productions have their dark sides but human health does not really seem to be an issue. If you want to be environmentally conscious you can avoid both if you simply do not eat fish.

IamQuh Yeah, and I didn't eat any of that. I carefully track the ingredients, avoid, and read up on additives. I'm not a hippy, and considering lobbying and the revolving door in politics, and that some artificial food additives, such as some artificial colors, have already been banned in the US and abroad due to health concerns, I think I am logical to be wary. Also, when I said famed salmon has problems, I wasn't necessarily referring to health problems, but problems in general such as environmental concerns, such as the use of antibiotics, diseased fish, and the risk of farmed specimens escaping and contaminating the wild.

Nope, we have actual laws that punish harshly mislabeling and similar behavior. That is why Italy and France strongly opposed to the transatlantic commerce accord, because US would start to bring to us their mislabeled food. Also Americans are really picky with fish, for example they NEVER eat a whole fish, they always headless when sold or served. Often also without tail. In Italy instead they often give you whole fish, so there is no way they could give you something different.

+Aaron Azzcalibur According to TSGA, Tasmanian Salmons are not dyed. "The pink colour of the flesh comes from a nutrient added to the salmons’ diet called carotenoids; in the wild these usually come from shrimp-like krill or other crustaceans that the salmon eat. We feed our fish for the first couple months of life canthaxanthin in their diet and then for the last 12 months or so we move to 100% astaxanthin until harvest; the astaxanthin is synthetically derived and is nature identical, providing health benefits to the fish and the colour of fish that our customers demand." In addition, Australia does not have a strong salmon farming industry yet. It is still growing.

Good thing I don't like seafood Every once in a while I will eat a shrimp or two (I like shrimp, but I get tired of it VERY quickly), but that's about it Edit: no wait, I eat calamari sometimes, but I eat it about as often as I eat shrimp
