Wow ! I don’t like to say wow but now I just feel like saying it ! And this BJJ application was something I dreamed about and Adam Mizner did it. I’m blessed. And I’m saying that because I practice BJJ and I’m working on doing it while abandoning force for Jin instead.

There was no BJJ application here. The positions shown don't reflect grappling at all. The gift wrap position shown makes no sense, the student wasn't applying any pressure because he's not on his toes and has no control of Adam's wrist. That said, the defense by bringing the arm up over the head is sound. Nobody does an Americana like that from kesa gatame or side control. There's no underhook from the student to prevent Adam taking his back. The student would be attacking the far side arm, not the close one. Even white belts know that you can simply extend the arm, because your arm isn't actually locked up.

I studied Tai Chi for 14 years with a guy who was a genuine badass with real street fighting experience. There is good news and bad news. The good news is that Tai Chi for hand-to-hand combat is real, it can work. I have experienced it. There is LOTS of bad news, though. 1) Most teachers are fakes. They can't actually do it. 2) Most of the teachers who can actually do it, can't actually teach it. They can't give students a frame of reference to even understand what they are trying to get across. 3) Even if 1 and 2 were in place, most students can't actually learn it. It has to do with feel. There are no visuals that can give you that. You have to find it in yourself. I will freely admit that I was NOT one of the students who could learn it, and/or, my instructor, who could do it, was unable to teach much to me. It was 14 years I won't get back again. Each year I kept hoping the lightbulb would come on, but it never did. I have no idea if this Mizner guy is for real. It looks fake to me, but again visuals don't tell the tale. It may be good for health and personal development, but if you want to learn to be able to defend yourself, stick with traditional "hard" martial arts.

The frustration and desire to belittle and discredit what doesn't fit into one's current understanding of reality is just a coping mechanism for ego to defend its old understanding of reality it is so attached to. It would be wiser rather not to cling to anything one thinks he understands about reality and simply explore. That way a lot of frustration will be avoided because you have nothing to defend. You're just a curious looker.

Adam Mizner is not a master of Tai Chi, and is in fact not even good. He grunts and moans when he says he's exerting no force. His students are throwing themselves, or very poorly trained to defend themselves--they throw way too easily and too far, it is staged or worse he could be intentionally training them to stiffen up and go flying. I have no problem with improvising new styles of Tai Chi and even mixing Tai Chi with other arts. I have no problem with using external force. But Adam Mizner is lying about what he can and can't do.
