Adam Grant: What frogs in hot water can teach us about thinking again | TED
Why are humans so slow to react to looming crises, like a forewarned pandemic or a warming planet? It's because we're reluctant to rethink, say organizational psychologist Adam Grant. From a near-disastrous hike on Panama's highest mountain to courageously joining his high school's diving team, Grant borrows examples from his own life to illustrate how tunnel vision around our goals, habits and identities can find us stuck on a narrow path. Drawing on his research, he shares counterintuitive insights on how to broaden your focus and remain open to opportunities for rethinking. (If you think you know something about frogs, watch until the end and get ready to think again.)

oh man. this video was shared w me for a workshop, and i think it is one of the most relatable videos i’ve ever watched from TED. legitimately THANK YOU to you, Adam, and to my early career mentor who sent this out to our group. i’m ready to stop thinking so hard. all i do is think and never do.
adam grant is one of my fav ted talks speaker but idk why i am anticipating to watch this before. i am a 11th grader and i'm thinking of having a break before going to uni. i just love this talk sm, i'll be taking a gap year and rethink what i really wanna do with my life. thank you mr. grant for another amazing talk! ❤️
Love everything you put out Adam! 🙏❤️ Thanks for all the research and effort that happens behind the scenes to create these clear, relevant frameworks. Super valuable in life and work! Biggest takeaway for me: Changing your mind can FEEL like admitting you’ve made a mistake. And we let the fear of mistakes hold sooooooo much power over our decisions (and lives) 🤯
I do hope Adam Grant will have his own KZread channel. Thank you for such an insightful talk, as always❤️
This is one the most effective and understandable ted talk I ever seen . It’s wow
“Good teachers introduce new thoughts but great teachers introduce a new way of thinking” . Judging by this standard you are beyond great. Indeed as a newly graduate, my premature goal and identity really trouble me a lot in face of my transitional period from college to society. I tried to rethink but what’s the point of rethinking if my state of mind and perception of everything around remain the same? now I will try to rethink as you show me in this video. Thanks!
This is one such valuable video. Thank you Adam !
What an awesome TED talk!! There are so many profound thoughts in this presentation! I need to listen to this talk a few times!! Thank you!
Those ancient words of wisdom that when the student is ready the teacher will appear. I am well beyond the average age of most students, yet because of a major life changing surgery several months ago, I've been faced with "thinking again" or literally dying. Last night when I was searching for solutions to breathing challenges ... I happened to find an interview with Adam Grant (not related to breathing, never the less something vitally needed). I am SO SO SO VERY impressed, inspired and amazed at the (thank you Adam} MAGIC that can appear when we are utterly focused on finding solutions!!!
Rethinking identity has been one of the most challenging aspects of my personal 50 yr journey. I have often prolonged transitions because I identify so deeply with a particular passion or profession. Part of the difficulty is shame based. A sense of failure or waste of time/effort. Like getting degrees in areas you no longer aspire to or ideologically identify with. Then you question your own ability to believe in anything because you once held to certain ideals/perspectives and now see things in a very different light. Not just an evolving variation but in direct opposition of what you once believed.
This TALK is SO GOOD!

Excellent video!! Yes. It is time for me to rethink! Very insightful and a powerful video ,,,what I needed to hear for my business. Thank you!
Very important & underrated topic..rethinking & keeping an open mind are the defining characteristics of rational human unfortunately nowadays there is very little thought given to this
If only we had a place we could go weekly to meditate on our own weakness, and rethink our own lives in the spirit of humility. One that encouraged us to be less selfish, less judgemental, and to see the sometimes hidden virtues in others. I realized a few years ago that religious practice is less about belief, and more about the framing operating system it installs. This talk reminded me why I appreciate the many good churches.
This was much need!

This is one of my favs. Because all he says is impossible to me.
The biggest reason why the metaphor of the frog in the pot is interesting is that it points out the most common reason why people fail to rethink a situation : We don't register gradual changes appropriately so we feel like there's no reason to rethink a situation that has barely changed. If something changes by 1% 200 times that basically means it's completely different yet we often keep the exact same strategy because we never felt like the 1% change was enough to justify rethinking our strategy.

Hello, I just watched a video by TED named this. "What if 3D printing was 100x faster? | Joseph DeSimone" *btw im on my moms account* So maybe you guys can do my idea, which my idea is that instead of having the print-out be on a platform with water and having light dry the water to do the print-out, you can use clay and put it in a microwave, or you can use nitrogen and make it interact with a liquid to turn it into a solid like in this --> "Turning a liquid into a solid" video that you can copy and paste to watch just like the other one in quotes. Theres also a video with the title talking about printing a detailed onject in 30 seconds! its called this... "Printing tiny, high-precision objects in a matter of seconds" So yeah. Thanks for reading this comment if you did.
