I'd really be interested in a teardown of one of those rotary modules. Motor+reduction+angle sensing+a slip ring in a tiny ball like that is pretty wild. But I still think the real star of the show is the level of polish on the software. Interactive tutorials and being able to pick joints and angles through a graphical interface is incredibly cool.

I love that it’s all nicely laid out on the screen AND app, and having the 3D graphical feedback for motion and part ID on the connected device is excellent. Well thought out, I’d say a nice step up from the old Lego Mindstorms.

Let's just take a moment to appreciate the hardware. Back-driveable motors, addressable modules (which seems to be unique as they can provide a feedback of the robot's state), camera, range sensor, pressure sensor, what seems to be a pretty beefy wi-fi enabled mircontroller... All in a "kids toy". I SO want a SDK for that!

Yea man, toys these days r SO LIT!! I remember I had a magnet pieces toys when I was a kid and I was so obsessed with it, imagine being a kid now and having this! (especially during pandemic.. Dannnnnng I prob wouldn't even notice how long I haven't left the house lol

@@cher1382Me to, if I had these I would stay the entire quarantine inside! I had a Lego Mindstorm. It was quite neat and with third party tools, it could do a MONSTRUOUS amount of things! Still, it didn't have all the extra goodies that those have!

This looks absolutely incredible and I hope they update the app to use the 'brain' IMU data to orient the robot correctly on the phone display, that would make it massively better but even as it is, it's functional!

Very impressive system really, understandably expensive but there really is alot going on. Would have been great to have as a kid!

its way overpriced and just coz its a great toy doesnt mean parents are willing to spend £450-£1000 on a toy for 8yo's and there isnt a market for overpriced kids robots made of plastic otherwise there would be more companies doing it than just 1. i think this company will go bankrupt i think this would be more successful if it was given a new paint job and marketed as a robotics kit for adults without a background in coding who want to make things but dont even know what a arduino is

@@reececrook7021 for something similar it would cost about the same without factoring in the app and the r and d needed in order to fit motors and leds and rotary encoders in such a small face, combining that with the pre made integration with python and the price is justified. Think of it this way, if you get the bundle on Amazon for bac instead of just getting the starter kit, it is around $300 for a modular robot system with 4 motors, a longer skeleton piece, and the brain which is a computer with a touchscreen and camera.

It looks so much like the same darn thing, I'm gonna have trouble sleeping.

The only thing I'm interested in it the repeatability and torque ;) But it's a great tool for kids to learn more about how these robots work. I mean, in the near future these will become more common goods and hopefully they will also get a more useful application.

This seems really cool, but I've looked into it and there doesn't appear to be a real SDK yet. They need to get on with releasing it, then I'd be sold. It has about everything somebody who isn't entirely familiar with electrical engineering, but is a programmer (me) needs to get started on something fun, and it looks quite polished and nice.

I thought "that looks expensive"........ checks site...."ah, yes".

I really like that as an introductory tool, it would also be really easy for me to control

Gotta be honest I didn't think I would like this, since I normally avoid the "maker" toys with only one way to do it right since that kind of defeats the creativity imo. However, this is just incredible! Just like Legos you can follow the instructions or make it up yourself with infinite ways to build and program, assumedly infinitely expandable (within the current rating of the battery), and overall just BEAUTIFULLY polished in every aspect. As soon as Bac came to life I was very impressed with the motor speed and precision especially combined with the animation, and it didn't stop there. Definitely something I'd consider getting my future kid.

1K(usd) for the box he demonstrated really seems like a good deal for what this is. I would hope the devs would release a kit for it. Kind of want to put it on a rail system mounted to the walls and ceiling let it move about. Also needs an "Alexa" or "Hey Google" interface.

Very clever, great way to get kids and adults into robotics, will have to wait for a cheaper version to come out though

this kit is seriously impressive! it would be nice if it had more power, but the polish and ease of use in both hardware and software are incredible. could you do some tests on torque and repeatability please? it would be amazing if they had an open source API to allow DIY modules to interface with it. i'd love a self latching joint solution so one or more robots can join together and assemble themselves.

This is a new version of CellRobot which I saw at the Maker Faire in 2016. The interconnect looks weaker on this version, probably even designed for safety breakaway. Both of these are based on MIT's ATRON project which I think is open source and would meet your requirements, but requires a CNC to build

@@The_One_Time entirely different companies. Jibo was built by Jibo Inc and has been long defunct. Clicbot is made by Jianbo.

That depends on the company and the product. Some products are cheap enough that they send them out to keep, some expensive things are able to be purchased at a reduced price, and some are required to be returned, depending on the agreed contract for any given item :)

did you use ros-teensy to port ros_lib to be compatible with teensy 4.0

It's max battery life?, and does battery drains fast if we use more modules?, is there battery in every modules?

These are cool but kinda limiting with the lack of parts and high price. Maybe theres a parts expantion pack with extra motors. id love to see a snake robot made with this.

How expensive are they? How much CPU power and storage is in the "brain"? Are the modules open for makers to integrate their unique components, like other sensors? Does it still work when it drives itself off the table? With those exposed POGO pins, how does it handle getting wet?

1. Quite expensive around $450 normally for the starting kit 2. Arm A7 not sure about storage 3. No unfortunately 4. Would require testing but seems pretty sturdy 5. Should be fine with a bit of water, I would be more worried about water getting into the motors

does it have a way to rfecharge itself? i wanted to have it stationary and not to worry about charging it like anki vector.

it cannot recharge itself, it is meant to be used for educational purposes unlike vector which is meant to be always on

I wonder how power works on this thing and where it charges... How long the charge lasts; do I need to charge the modules individually? Other than that, cool idea

Its simple, power goes to a positive and negative rail that is shared by all the components, like a prototyping breadboard

I want my CEO to be able to do CNC work. Look up embedded systems and micro controllers to not confuse them with micro computers. It's like using atomic bombs for deer hunting. Edit: This product is actually a prime example of a distributed system and for sure uses clever middleware with some kind of message bus.

i'd love to see that in Brazil. There is not even shipping to here.

I feel like they missed a trick. It is great to begin with but the growth is limited. They should have added machine learning to the system as it would be cool to put together some random parts put a target on one wall and it on the other side of the room and it works out how to get to the target as fast as possible iteratively. Every time you restart the process it would come up with a new way that it finds most efficient. Also item and colour detection so it can take the red items from a bowl of different ones and place it in another bowl or other advanced tasks.

This looks a little bit epic, and you definitely put the info into infomercial (I'm glad their sponsorship can move your quality of life in the right direction). But it's too expensive. Not necessarily for what it is - those components aren't free and you have to consider R&D, profit, and the size of their marketplace - but it's unjustifiable for many people. Which is a shame. I can see this being something my daughter and I would get a lot of use out of, but instead I'm worried most of these will end up collecting dust in some rich kids bedroom because their parents thought it would make them the next James Bruton, but all they care about is popularity and their PS5. Is my bitterness showing a little bit? O:) Ultimately I'm happy this is a thing that's out there. It feels like the future I wanted when I was a kid who thought that Lego having motors was living in the future :)

That's awesome that it's something your daughter might enjoy. Maybe there's a cheaper similar thing from another company, maybe you could 3D print your own, maybe you could save up for a while. The idea that giving kids more chances is unjustifiable... is uncomfortable. Even popsicle sticks, hot glue, RC servos and a $1 chinese arduino can go a long way if you spark some curiousity instead of pushing them away by hating on socializing and gaming

We're definitely inventive with that we have and I'm always looking for ways to improve both of our understandings of these things. There are definitely cheaper alternatives out there... I was just talking about this product specifically.

A robot with sensors, camera, internet connection and closed firmware from a chinese company. For kids to play with. What could go wrong? Technically, it's a cool kit tho. Too bad, it's a privacy nightmare too.
