Nothing will kill the joy of collecting quicker than being a completist. As far as Hasbro’s antics are concerned, they’re not going to drive me away from the hobby, They’re just going to be selling me a lot less figures than they could be and should be. If they stop making figures tomorrow, I have a collection that I will enjoy for the rest of my life. How long has it been since DCUC ended? Ten years now? I still love them. I do think Hasbro is afraid that if they complete our teams with those last one or two characters we need, we’re all going to walk away. It’s becoming a self fulfilling prophecy. Collectors are walking away because carrots go rotten if you leave them dangling too long.

I think the best way I have to keep my collection under control is space, I only have a certain amount of shelfs in my room, so if I buy a figure I have to ask myself what I am getting rid of, the only thing that I have permission to keep in boxes is accessories and roleplay items, everything has to be on display

Every time I complete a vintage toyline I get the itch pretty quickly to start on another one. Some of the vintage lines can be expensive to finish but the line is finite. It has an end.

I managed to reign it in, these last few years. In the process of selling off about 3/4 of my collection, in the process, and my collection feels so much more fulfilling as a result.

Interesting topic. I certainly branched out from my normal collecting during COVID through 2023. It's easy to complain about the new pricing, but I'm also starting to see more value. A $25 Black Series from 2023 is much better in terms of articulation and sculpting than a $20 figure from 2019. That said, I am going to try and reel it back a little in 2024. Premium shelf space is running out and I don't like to keep bins and bins of toys that I can't see.

I was a modern Star Wars action figure collector until 2003 (yes, 20 years ago). I started originally collecting the POFT2 line because I didn't have way to collect the Kenner line from my childhood. What put me over the edge was a Tusken Raider figure from the Sage line. It had a removable head that was intended to held on the body with magnets. The problem was the figure I bought had a factory error, the magnets were same poles. Once out of the packaging there was no way to put the head back on the body and the was no way to detect this error but looking at the carded figure. This was the first new figure I had found in months (post movie retail slump) and to have this issue put me over. I have only bought a handful of modern Star Wars since. Maybe 6 total. I do look at the Star Wars toys frequently and have been tempted a couple of times. But the temptation quickly passes. I don't keep with things the way I did in the late 90s and early 2000s, which helps. The decision to stop collecting modern Star Wars was made easier by a couple of factors. First, my first love of action figure collecting was the original Kenner line. I was no longer collecting the modern line as a stand in for them. Second, as a toy collector Lego was always main focus. I'm a Lego collector who likes Star Wars, not a Star Wars collector who likes Lego (if that makes sense). Third, I was starting grad school and needed to cut down on some of extra expenses. My original Kenner collection was nearly complete at that time and I would rather spend money on a Lego set in general.

I've definitely scaled back but it honestly never ends completely. I'm getting to the end on a couple of lines in terms of what I want for Star Wars Black Series and Transformers Studio Series '86. But it's also allowed me to look into some select favorite figures from new lines, especially Super 7 G.I. Joe, S.H. Figuarts, and even a couple of Saint Seiya Myth Cloth.

I had been collecting the Thundercats Classics line since the Mattel days, and on into the Super 7 versions. But recently I cancelled all my Tcats pre-orders except for Snarf to finish off the main group. I've been buying all the characters, even obscure ones, just to support the line so I can finally get a complete set of main characters. Final straw was seeing the upcoming figures at SDCC, and they just looked BAD, so I was out.

I don't have a list. I have favorites, like the Hulk (green only) that I'll get in pretty much whatever form. And if a figure looks cool or is unique, I'll get it. I often will play the long game for most of my figure collecting to get a more acceptable price. I have thought maybe I should stop, because I'm getting older & I already have a lot of stuff. But I probably never will. Because there are things that I'm always discovering, and that's fun. If you're having fun & have the means, then just keep going with it.

For me, I was never a completist, everything I have falls into either, I wanted it because of childhood attachment or adult attachment. I'm primary a Transformer guy but I have a few Gi Joe that are special to me (Shipwreck and Cover Girl) and the only Star Wars I have are KOTOR and SWTOR stuff.

You collect very differently than I do. Im not addicted, Im driven by nostalgia. I wanted every He-Man, Bravestarr, Silverhawk, Ghostbusters and Thundercat figure when I was a kid. Now that I have my own money, I am going to make that happen. Once I have them all, I am content .... and then they announce a NEW Thundercats line, which means I now no longer have them ALL, so I buy that whole line, and I am content. Then they announce another He-Man line ... so it starts again.

Was collecting the NECA toon tmnt line and got every figure I need with April being the last crucial figure. So when they announced that the sewer lair was $300, I drew a line and passed on it. Not interested in some ransom goons, space or sports version of the turtles, nor characters that only appear briefly in one episode.

A long rant but. I am a completeist. I collect most things. I have a complete Vintage MOTU set, same with 200X, Classics, Robotech, WWF Hasbro, WCW Toy Biz, Star Wars and more. But, after Classics and with the release of Origins and Masterverse, I'd reached saturation. So whenever I buy those figures I am very selective. However, for years I've resisted the one toyline, of which comics I read the most of during my childhood. In fact I have also a complete Swedish Marvels Comic Collection (1966-2023). Due to the many characters I have refused to collect this line. Especialy since I am as I wrote, completeist, it exist too many characters in Marvel, not to forget mentioning the thousands of variants. But I finally caved in, last year I made a deliberate choice to start collect. But I knew I needed rules. Otherwise this could easily spiral. So I made a list of the main characters I want, a list of around 77 characters. Another rule is that I will only collect the figures on how they are based of their look in comics during the years of 1984-1990. Of course I have a few exeptions, like adding Deadpool and Venom and Carnage to the list, since they are prominent figures but appeared after 1990 in Sweden. I have similar rules to my Star Wars Black Series. Mostly A-list characters only, and NO Star Wars Disney characters (Except for Rogue One main team). So there you have it :)

To be fair, a few clearly meant for Studio Series 86 figures did end up in mainline, like Cyclonus, & some of RotB's mainline seem better that Studio Series, somehow (I've not bought any; not a live action design fan, especially of the "entire car is my backpack" philosophy - would've gotten RotB mainline Airrazor, if she wasn't in a 3-pack with 2 not great figures, though). So, they bait you with a line, then hook you into expanding beyond it, to get the companion pieces or better versions, & then your collecting rule's got a loophole in it. I tended to only collect one of any TF mold I have an interest in, be it character, engineering, whatever, & the current run (WfC & Legacy) of figures actually got me to go near completionist on the modern G1 & BW updates, because so many are so close to perfect representations, & are mostly in-scale in 'bot mode. For the first time, I have a full Squadron of Seekers (+1, since I found Coronation Starscream during a 75% off close out liquidation, & wanted the Coronation gear, cheap) & 3 Reflectors (I opted for the box set, with different colors & the extra camera parts). I even have a few repaints or retools not from G1, just to have the characters (like, I have Siege Ultra Magnus & Legacy Nova Prime and Legacy RiD Scourge & Legacy G2 Optimus. Normally, I'd just get the one I'm most interested in or released first). I expect my collecting will greatly slow down, once they do the inevitable full reset. Probably only favorite characters, with cool designs, or figures with interesting engineering. The likelihood of better representations is very limited.

I love, love, love GI Joe, but I downright loathe the sculpting for Marvel Legends. The visible torso ab crunch u-shaped cut out drives me absolutely crazy. So I passed on GI Joe Legends, oh sorry, Classified. Every time I see a figure that will suck me into it, it's either a limited run exclusive (even though the original figure in the first run from 82 and forward was mass produced), or a store exclusive that is impossible to find in store. In addition, how is Hasbro Pulse their toy store if they sell out before Entertainment Earth and Big Bad Toy Store. Because pulse is kept at such low quantities, desired items are impossible to buy. Hasbro has been making things very easy for me to say no to GI Joe Legends. LEGO toys and Playmobil toys are whole different animal. They give the consumer exactly what they want with limited qty items being niche fan items, not things everyone will want.
