Why Max Steel is (still) the biggest toy brand in Latin America!

Ойын-сауық

Max Steel. A brand that has done "okay" in the United States, but south of the border it is HUGE! Why is this? Scott Toy Guru Neitlich looks at the history of the Big Jim, Kid Acero and Max Steel brands to connect the dots and show how cultural heritage that exists in one region can keep a brand alive and dominant in the toy aisles even when it does not work in other parts of the world. Toy History deep dive ahead! Comes with our highest possible recommendation.

Before watching this video I always felt that the hype for Max Steel was huge back home and not so much in the states, but now this confirms it. The ads for it where playing all the time in Spanish when I was a kid and It was a huge part of my childhood for sure.

3:14 that ridiculous box art appeals to me for reasons I can't even begin to explain. The very idea of someone pedaling a child's bike (scaled up to adult size) while at the same time shooting a laser gun...it's truly the stuff of legend.

I'm from Peru and I was a giant Max Steel fan from 2000 until 2006, when I started collecting Star Wars. I have fond memories of playing with my Max Steels. And boy they were really really cool. I think that had it kept its quality maybe the brand would have made adult collectors... but the quality is just really bad and simple since 2008, at least compared to when I was a kid. And it certainly isn't nostalgia bias, you just have to take a basic 2000s Max Steel or villain and compare it to a current one.

I still collect dem wen I find them in good condition. Now I think that this video is cool to the fact that some1 is finally explaining the connection between jim and max and kid acero and max. I did not like the max steel figures until I heard the story about jim being max dad. (Then I bought alot of the 90s steel figs.) I thought that was cool as hell. Now I heard a rumor the mattels pulsar figure is also related to jim and max, do u got any info on that???lol. Great content , I respect you and your experience with mattel and toys period. One last thing is it possible for you to do a review/ video on the big jim line. U know how the concept came up and who worked on them. You see jim was big wen they came out . It's my2nd favorite toy line after of course gijoe. I keep hoping Netflix toys that made us would do it but not yet. Would love to get the super info on a line that brings back super memories. Big Jim line doesn't get the respect it deserves. Again great video and much respect to u on wat u did for motu and toys....✌

Great video as always! By the way, the Big Jim 004 figure did have a rotating face feature (that's why it had that huge Man-E-Faces-esque helmet made of hair), but it would work by moving his arm. The other side of his drum-head had a socket to which you could attach any one of those masks. I remember when my Big Jim's arm fell off and I was stuck with his fake-face side forever... a pretty traumatizing experience to a 5 year old child 😂

Funny how you listed Cy Girls at the beginning of the video, considering how obscure the line is despite that it started the 1/6 articulated female toylines aimed for male collectors. Anyway, I learned about the connection between Max Steel and Big Jim when I frequented a toy forum called Men with Dolls - this was a toy forum focused on Cy Girls figures, both stock and custom figures. I had no idea that Max Steel wasn't initially related to Big Jim. Because Max Steel wasn't related to Big Jim until later on, maybe Mattel had forgotten about Big Jack, and therefore changed Jefferson ethnicity. As for Cy Girls, it was known as "Cool Girls" in Japan. It was also co-created by two companies, Big Box Toys and Takara. As such, there was a promotional Cool Girls image of Aska (I think she was initially called Shadow in the US - her name was later reverted back to Aska later down the line) fighting Optimus Prime. Both Aska and Prime were also in a Smash Brother clone game for the Game Cube and Playstation 2.

@@spectorcreative1872a video on Cy Girls would be cool (pun not intended) but would it be a bit obscure? There is plenty to talk about the brand, however; BBI tried to revamped the franchise with a Gothic Lolita theme to it, whereas Takara went the other direction with the brand by making it as a licensed-focused toyline with one-off female characters from other IP such as Ultraman and Gatchaman. The absence of Cy Girls led to another member from the Men with Dolls forums to create Triad Toys - they started out making custom clothing for Cy Girls figures. According to another toy forum, it was speculated that the company went under due to financial issues. Coincidentally, it was rumored that Louie Tan, the owner of Triad Toys, went and started his own franchise consulting business. Regardless, the company had a lot of fans at the time mainly because they were there to fill in the gap that Cy Girls once occupied. I think Phicen now fills in that gap.

As a kid I got like four or five Max Steel figures, but mostly because I got them as presents. I wasn't really that interested in it as a character, but I liked the figures, and my uncles got them because they were actually quite affordable. Around the same time Hasbro relaunched Action Man and we all saw it as a Max Steel rip-off, because we didn't really know that it was older than Big Jim. I don't think kids my age were actually interested in the character but we all got multiples because they were affordable toys that served well as birthday and christmas presents. In my whole class I only new one kid who was into the tv show and the characters. What was cool is that they were compatible with Barbie, so a lot of kids just used them as replacements for Ken.

Excellent video, I was really looking forward to this. I would like to ask two questions. 1.- What do you think is the reason why these large-scale action figures (around 12 ") triumph in Latin America? (Max Steel, Action Man, Titan Hero Series and so on.) Nowadays, I´m aware of the Kid Acero history, but for most of the years of the first iteration of Max Steel (my childhood), I was completely unaware about it, I suppose was the case for many children. 2.- Can I use this and other of your videos as a reference? I think the information on how the industry works is quite unknown to many collectors. I like to share information with fans. I don't make money with this ;) Thank you very much for touching a little of the history of Max Steel. Kind Regards. (Maybe your Spanish is better than my English, don't worry).

And the real explanation (at least here in México) about why Max Steel sells better than superheroes is because there are very few stores that sell Marvel, DC, or Masters of the Universe action figures and they don't have a lot of stock so we have to go to secondary markets to get those (and children don't usually go there to buy their toys), so that's why Max Steel is still popular, you can find it in any store or walmart here while the others don't (from time to time some good figures appears in walmart)... But I gotta say Big Jim or Kid Acero where one of the best action figures to have in the 70's and 80's in México, but I don't agree that we have Max Steel for nostalgia, like in the US most of all collectors have nostalgia for the Masters of the Universe or star wars retro figures.

Okay Scott, I have to make some corrections: 1. The Big Jim line was Before Tarzan and Grizzly Adams. You can tell because Big Jim started with a straight hand for the Karate chop. Later and at the end of the 70's beginning of the 80's his hand change in to a grab had. You can see those hands used in Tarzan and Adams. 2.Kid Acero is a Mexican thing. The rest of Latin America Had Big Jim, Big Josh, Big Jeff and Big Jack and later The WOLF pack (Escuadron Lobo). And no, DR. Draco (Dr. Steel) wasn't a bad guy, he was part of the Escuadron Lobo. He was still called Dr. STEEL outside Mexico. 3. The Invisible man, Kid Acero (with torpedo fist), the Bionic Man and the alien Nocto were only from Mexico. Invisible man and Bionic Man used the same face (Big Jeff). 4. In Europe , Spain had only the Big Jim line sold by Congosto. And then rest of the other European Big Jim characters that were sold in Italy , France, Italy, Germany and England. This line had the Secret agents, Cowboys and space Big Jim figures. 5. The European line lasted even when Masters of the Universe was out. In fact I think it lasted until 1985. 6. Here in Puerto Rico, we only had the USA Big Jim line. Yet, we do have the Max Steel line (local toy store buys their stuff from Argentina). They sell for $5.99.

I didn't know the movie was a thing until like a year or so later, and I watched it, and it wasn't bad. I even found the San Diego Comic Con 2014 Max Steel action figure online and on sale, and got one. I must say, it is a very fun figure. It has light up capabilities but it doesn't hinder the articulation. Were they to make more figures along this line, I think they would sell. I always wanted more "action" in my action figures as a kid. I wanted more articulation so I could get them into cool poses, but also if they had any kind of cool features that didn't hinder that, so much the better. I would suggest contacting Mattel’s PR group and getting an exact quote!

You are mistaken, the name of the company is not KID ACERO, it's CIPSA, (COMPAÑÍA INDUSTRIAL DE PLÁSTICOS, S.A.) founded in 1939 by Max Shein and closed in the early 80's. They closed toy production and focused on containers (Cipsaware. which competed with Tupperware), later bought by Rubbermaid. I am Mexican.

There is a new book that just came out from Val Staples and Pixel Dan (I think it streets in April). It has a visual list of every toy ever! Amazon carries it.

I like the nerd corps blue max era, and hearing how that area has a HUGE connection to Tokusatsu (power rangers) I am not surprised by the popularity or my interest
