Here in Missouri, gun season runs for 11 days during the rut, always the week before Thanksgiving week up to 2 days before Thanksgiving. You can use a bow, or crossbow during rifle season if you like. I feel for you guys in Wisconsin, I hope it all works out for you! The are mailing everyone question forms seeing who wants rifle season moved a week later, during Thanksgiving week. I wish rifle season started the Saturday right after Thanksgiving.

Man Jeff, your passion shows big time in this video. Your absolutely the best out there. I’ve attempted to watch other “deer expert” channels and hands down you’re the best out there. I don’t even hunt Wisconsin and watched the entirety of this video. Serious question though..... you mentioned sandy soil... that’s what is on the property I hunt. Which food plot seeds grow best in sandy soil?

I would like to thank you for your time and for sharing your experience. I appreciate your comments about crossbow comments. I am 50 years old this year I learned how to use a longbow at the age of 6 as soon as I could string the bow without help I graduated to a recurve around 8 years old then after proving my skills my Dad got me a compound for my 12th birthday and have hunted whitetail over 30 years with vertical bows until I got hurt working and haven't been able to do it anymore. I almost gave up. After 2 years of not hunting a good friend let me shoot his crossbow and I regained my love for deer hunting again. I take a lot of flack for using crossbow and that's fine I'm doing what I love. Thanks again for your input and please keep up the great work I really enjoy your videos.

I agree 100% with you. Whitetail hunters need to stick together to protect and manage what we love and want to share with future generations. I respect the DNR but don't think for one second they have it all figured out. We hunters educate them. We cannot sit back and let them make all these decisions and not give our input. If you dont protect what you have, it will eventually be taken away. That's true with anything. I am a MN resident and hunt both MN and Wisconsin archery seasons. I really hope WI keeps there season the way it is now. It works so why change it? Unfortunately in southern MN the majority of the rut is during our shotgun season.

I was an avid bow hunter all my life and at the age of 61 and 40 years of working in a truck shop I went to a cross bow as I just couldn’t be as accurate as I needed to be with my compound bow to be ethical. Really interesting how the different states manage the seasons differently. Here in NH we have archery from Sept 15-Dec 15 with no closure, Muzzleloader is late Oct/early Nov for 10 days in the pre-rut/early rut and then rifle starts on Veterans Day through the first week of Dec (muzzleloader and rifle use the same tag). Our state is relatively small compared to Wisconsin and the geology/soil is much different. They try to manage the deer density around 12 deer per square mile. Between 6-10 deer per square mile we see negative impacts to forest regeneration and thus habitat quality due to our thin granitic soils. We don't have the agriculture to support the high deer densities. As a land manager and a deer hunter, I'd like to see the deer density reduced, but for hunter satisfaction the state wants the numbers up. My neighbor installed a bunch of group selection/patch cuts on his couple hundred acres a few years ago. The regeneration is really poor. I am planning on using my tags on does this year to bring my local density down...

Jeff...Great Comments!!!!! Thanks for bringing this up again, and getting the word out. To you point in WI, roughly 50% of all archers use a crossbow. Opening weekend makes up about 65%-68% of the total harvest for the 9 day gun deer season. in WI. As you said some of the proposals this year are terrible, and more importantly they pit sportsman against each other. Every sportsman should make the effort to make their voice heard, and contact the DNR web site 4-16 thru 4-29 to make their opinion known. thanks, Bob

Brent, unfortunately private land used to be "free" and it never should have been in the first place. We have fewer hunters, and fewer hunters spending fewer amounts of time in the woods. Also, if folks own hunting land that hunters are willing to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to own, then it should be worth at least a fraction of that to lease. I visit private land adjacent to public land in WI just about every single month of the year...that is barely used during the hunting season or not at all. Even more so now. Within an hour of EVERY WI resident. Land has value...it should cost. Even public land had value...but it is free and less used more than ever. Far fewer hunters in the woods. And folks who get to hunt on private land for free need to respect the landowners and help pay the bills...

I fully agree with what you have stated on all accounts. And one of the things that kills me is these archery hunters that bash crossbow hunters. If we don't learn to work as a whole, and respect one another to work together for health and well being of the sport, it will die eventually and all there will be us finger pointing. Dnr needs help, these special interest groups are buying regulations and forcing methods that are not for the interest of the hunter. As hunters and outdoor enthusiasts we need to become more active individually in the decisions made and bring the special interest groups and the methods of which they are trying to push to the public eye so that it is a topic and conversation. So that those groups and regulations are reflected on those trying to push them. Accountability and giving people the ability to see the true injective behind the madness that is bought and pushed through or ignored. Aside from hunters the revenue that hunting brings should that be destroyed imagine the ripple affect that would have on the state and it's people financially.

Nov. 6th plus or minus a day I can usually always expect that 5+ bucks will run a doe right by my stand. but its almost impossible to get a shot on one when they just don't ever stop running. lol

I actually do not think and have seen that the WI deer numbers are low. Just fewer hunters and fewer hunters spending less time in the woods overall. 10s of thousands of acres of public land hardly used any more, all across the state... Fortunately EHD has had very little impact overall. Which is a very good thing! Just a lot fewer hunter days afield...

Hello from Delaware! I grew up in the big woods of PA (Cameron County) where it seems like some good balance has been achieved. Where I am now has a tremendously long season with many anterless firearm days and an early muzzleloader buck/doe season before the main firearm season starts in the heart of the rut. My first year here it seemed cool, but public land seems to get a beat down with a low chance at a quality buck in a state than can produce them (www.qdma.com/public-land-young-bucks-death-sentence/). Seems like an ongoing argument with people arguing we could have better quality vs others saying you can't tell me what a trophy is. Basic goal seems to be get rid of deer anyway we can due to crop destruction, etc.

10 day gun season extension, 2-5 day quiet period before gun season for zero hunting. Nearly just as many bucks are killed in the first couple of days of gun (likely the first day), then the entire early archery season combined. It's about balance...if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Unfortunately some in WI are attempting to pacify special interest groups and make changed that would hurt the quality of the hunt and herd, not help it.

The DNR should not worry about trying to satisfy all the hunters, they should base any decision on change against what is best for the longevity of the herd

  • @martinwilliamson8571
    @martinwilliamson85714 жыл бұрын

A good example is what happened in northern Wisconsin in the era of earn a buck. Extra doe tags were handed out up north the same as the middle and southern portions of the state, which due to larger amounts of agricultural property had much bigger and healthier herds than up north. This in conjunction with wolves introduced by the DNR, which is a rant for another time, created over harvesting of deer. This led to a drought in deer sightings and harvest for 6-8 years. Now, there are HUGE tracts of public and private land that don't get hunted because the interest isn't there. With no deer herd, people just weren't interested in the trek up north. Moving gun season into the rut will only push the change to mostly nocturnal movement due to hunter pressure earlier and I don't think the DNR realizes the impact increased buck kill and decreased breeding will have in the next 5-10 years on the deer herd. Also, for those who don't think crossbows should be used, I think the problem is about education regarding proper ethical use of a crossbow, not that the crossbow gives an unfair advantage. With regular practice, you can shoot a vertical compound just as far with the same accuracy. Bottom line, I love whitetail hunting and want our future generations to have good deer herd to look forward to. We need to band together. To the folks who only hunt opening weekend of rifle season, if you don't feel you have a fair chance, there are really cost-effective bows for sale that kill deer just fine. I hunted for several years with a $350 Bear Attitude from a box store because that is all I could afford at the time. Until last year when I upgraded, every deer I harvested with a bow was taken with that bow and cheap carbon arrows. Get out in the woods and experience the excitement of early season or the rut. The bow season is long, so if you really want a fair opportunity, I have a hard time believing that you can't find A weekend to hunt during the bow season. Stay safe and healthy.

The nostalgia of the "9 day hunt" would be completely ruined. Folks in Texas cannot believe that our parents in Wisco would let us skip school for a couple days during rifle season. I love the 3 month Bow/rifle season down here, but there is less pressure and way more acreage.

Hi D...for sure, the drip in hunting numbers is alarming. One thing that most states fail to see is that as the quality of the hunt drops, so does hunter participation, land values, dollars spent. Ask MI ☺️ Scary... 3500 more hunters seems incredibly small, overall. I'm a huge fan of Sunday hunting myself ☺️ But man those numbers are lite overall...

I live and hunt in lapeer county and also hunt in sanilac county. The areas I am in the neighbors are pretty good about the bucks. From what I hear a lot is everyone is looking for a 120” plus. I appreciate your content. You kill it on small property habitat work. Better habitat = better deer. If the DNR focused on habitat across the state instead of season dates you could support higher deer numbers, more deer available to shoot, and more hunters would have more opportunity. From the outside looking in it does seem your argument is a bit slighted towards better deer, not better hunter numbers. If the desire is to increase hunter numbers and WI really is losing 10,000 hunters per year seems they must try something different. You aren't getting the desired result currently so you have to change something. I know you stated WI has a great herd but that is still translating to losing hunters. You said it in the video "deer harvest down because hunter numbers down". The opposite would logically hold true. If you want better hunter numbers the herd may have to sacrifice a little. Keep in mind the standards of what we harvest don't have to change with the weapon we pursue them with.

It's all the same...the ML season right now already goes thru the first week of December. Moving it allows fewer folks to participate as deer congregate towards high value private parcels the later in December the season shifts. Fine for me...but not for hunters as a whole. Would equal less participation...

The shortening of crossbow (or creation of a xbow season, much like rifle and muzzleloader) seems to be at odds with lengthening gun season. The argument of “we’re all hunters who cares which weapon” seems like you’d be against the xbow change and for the gun change; or the argument of wanting more bucks to survive the year into the next age class you’d support the xbow change and be against the gun change. But in any case, this is the time to get your thoughts heard. Don’t miss it!

Jeff in the past you have mentioned a "Joe Hunter" who has sat in a blind for forty years looking over a pile of sugar beets. To him that is deer hunting. Every couple of years he gets a deer and about one third of those deer are bucks. One time he got a dandy and it hangs on the wall of his northwoods cabin. Lately he seems to be seeing fewer deer and a lot less bucks. Then he reads that bowhunters are taking 42% of the bucks BEFORE gun season. He asks himself "Why do they get to go first? Why do they get to hunt the rut and not me?" He works in a factory 50 weeks a year down south and only gets to hunt for one week. When bowhunters were killing 5% of the deer and 2% of the bucks he didn't worry much about bowhunters but now their actions are affecting HIM! He feels he is getting cheated and wants his old gun season back. If you are wondering where the political push is coming from for these proposed changes well there are a lot more Joe Hunters out there then you think.

Here we go again with the tired old "they are taking the best hunting days from my virtuous method of hunting and giving those prime days to that less virtuous method" discussions. One of these days I sincerely hope these constant complaints about the advantages given to one method of deer hunting (bow, crossbow, knife, spear, gun, bare handed strangulation, or whatever one thinks is more "virtuous" than the other methods) to the other methods by the aficionados of any given method during "their time" is going to cause the regulators to declare the deer season to be from this date to that date with weapon of choice and no special set aside dates reserved for any particular method. I chose not to bow hunt, tried it a bit back the high school years of 1970 and 1971 with a Bear 45# recurve bow and a home made climber that required bear hugging the tree to go up and down. Never really persisted in the pursuit, but I digress. My point is hunting "the rut" should not "belong" to any particular method of harvest just as the deer don't "belong" to the guy with the best food plots when they wander across the line and get killed by the do nothing neighbor. Honestly, I think one way to shut these arguments and the claims of "you are taking our days and giving them to those guys" is to limit hunters to only one weapon method per year. Here in MS deer season is 10-1 through 1-31 of the next year and archery is legal the entire 4 months. During that time archery gets exclusive first rights from 10-1 through the first weekend of November and still they complained when the opening of squirrel season was moved from the middle Sat of Oct to Oct 1st because it cut into "their" time of being in the woods with no guns around. My point is that it seems archery hunters and with the allowing of crossbows, it became the "real bow" hunters are the only ones I ever see or hear complaining about the regulators giving other method hunters any of "their" time while most of them lay the bow down and go to the gun ASAP when the season designation changes.

Didn't have time to read your post, but it's about balance and the impact on all hunters and herd. The big picture. WI already has balance...no need to make changes that destroy the quality of the herd, diminish land values and pacify special interest groups. Watch the video, become educated and make an informed decision for providing input if you are a WI resident. If you are not a WI resident, then hope these proposals never come your way. BTW, the Rut belongs to all hunters. Everyone has a choice to participate by picking up a weapon that is appropriate for the season. You are either a deer hunter or not...and that includes all weapons. The impact of those weapons per the time of the season they are used, should be weighed by all competent resource managers. If a person is really a deer hunter and wants to hunt an archery rut portion of the season...then pick up a bow and enjoy the hunt.

@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 Yes, I know we all have the right to pick up the "appropriate" weapon for the season and it seems that when "the rut" is involved for some reason the avid archery hunters strenuously advocate that it should be by their preferred method, knowing full well it doing so significantly lowers the "competition" against other hunters due to less hunters in the woods. An answer might be to have rut fall in gun season odd numbered years and archery the even numbered years. Share and share alike!! I do not agree with rut being relegated to always fall in favor of one more restrictive method of harvest, (restrictive being in ability), thankfully my state of MS does not have our primary, secondary, nor tertiary rut periods in an archery only exclusive window and still they and the auto insurance industry complains that hunters are not killing enough deer. Auto Ins Companies are influencing management decisions more than most can ever fathom. They threaten to raise rates unless something is done about the herd numbers, Ins Commissioner gets word to Game Dept Commissioners and the game is on to expand the kill numbers. At least that is my opinion.

@@bucmeister7713 @Bucmeister This shouldn't be about what weapons we are using, it should be about maintaining a strong deer herd. If the firearm season opens during the rut, the deer herd will be destroyed in a matter of years. Last year was hard for the firearm season because of the late start date and the weather was rough. This season will be better - it's just the rotation of the calendar. As someone who rifle hunts, I was also disappointed. The reason archery season has the advantage of hunting during the rut is because the efficiency of archery equipment is no where near that of a firearm. I also enjoy bowhunting. I don't do that because I think I am more "righteous" than those who hunt with a firearm. I do it because I love hunting. If these new regulations pass, hunting will become more difficult for everyone. These regulations will grant one fantastic firearm season but then we will end up looking like Michigan. (No offense Michigan hunters)
