Hi Emily! _(Mini-review)..._ ⭐️⭐️⭐️ *Wow! This is absolutely extraordinary!!!* ⭐️⭐️⭐️ The rendition shown here blows you away with such an astonishing performance! The Beatles "Across The Universe" is such an awesome song, so I couldn't wait to see you cover it! Indeed it was one of John Lennon's favorite compositions and the lyrics are incredible pure poetry. The song is over 40 years old, yet you bring new vibrant life to it! 😃 This takes skill and talent. I really like the new setting for your video! It looks refreshing and classy! Your visual presentation is lovely and I like the grey mottled carpet backdrop. The colors in the video are all quite muted, which reflects a dream-like setting; plus it seems you are playing a different acoustic guitar! (a new one?). The video is framed perfectly also! Such a stellar presentation. 👍 The recording is outstanding!. As the song starts and I hear the quality of the recording of the guitar, I know that it has been elitely done! The audio is crisp and clear which generates the nice fresh sound we hear. I can only see the Manly mic in the video frame; so the recording appears to be in mono. Plus it appears there's been no post effects processing on the audio. So what's been attained here with just one microphone is quite remarkable! 🎤 🔊 Bravo! (unless perhaps another mic on the guitar is just out of view). _Now with your singing!!..._ You put so much "feel" into the song; that it takes the listener on an emotional journey. Your vocals are exceptionally good and you cover this song brilliantly. Your voice is so addictive as you start and sing the first line 0:10; ♫ "Words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup" ♫ "They slither while they pass they slip away across the universe"♪. After hearing just this first verse, we know that this cover is going to be quite incredible! And it is!! 😊 Your voice is so special with an x-factor quality, which you are gifted with! You sing the words clearly and your phrasing is superb. We are in for a treat! There's a nice little look up at the camera at 0:20. Also, I like your little touch at 0:33 on; ♫ "Possessing and caressing me"♪. At 0:38 you start the chorus: ♫ "Jai Guru Deva om"♪, and sing it brilliantly plus give some nice camera work as well! There's beautiful sounding vocal control on; ♫ "Guru Deva"♪, with the precise amount of subtle vibrato. Executive singing! 🎤 👍 There's a tiny bit of sibilance on the lyric ♫ "change"♪; in the choruses, but perhaps that may pertain as being picky, because as a whole; the vocal recording has such clarity and definition! Your voice sounds so pure; whilst the guitar sounds so clean! 🎸 There is pure beauty in your portrayal of this song! 🌷🌱💕 🤗 As an experiment, I added reverb on your vocals and "woah", you sound truly awesome! Indeed you take us "across the universe!" (especially with reverb on the Choruses). It seems to take on another dimension in sound! As in other comments before, I could just envisage "Strings" in the background of your performance here. In saying all this though; it's really great how your initial recording is a 'dry' mix! The way you are sounding here in this raw form is astonishing! It's also worthy to note that your guitar playing is impeccable! The guitar sounds terrific Emily! 😃 At 1:15, you now sing the verse after the chorus: ♫ "Images of broken light" ♫ "which dance before me like a million eyes..."♪. Oh wow, you tackle this with such ease, as the phrasing in this song of continual flowing lyrics can be quite challenging. However you astound us with your remarkable ability to sing this with full of emotion and deliver the performance incredibly! You go on to sing the chorus a second time and it came to mind how interesting it could be to have the likes of "Chiara" do a harmony on the choruses; (pretending of course that there was indeed a collaboration!). I've heard harmonies on your voice before and it is a tremendously rich sound. In saying that though; for this song John Lennon sang it straight with one lead vocal. At 3:27 you start to repeat the chorus line; ♫ "Jai Guru Deva"♪. I like the clever way you finish the song (as the original has a fade-out) and the acknowledgement as you look up at the camera at 3:48. So well done there with your own little arrangement at the end! 🙂 What a joy it is to listen to you perform this song! _In conclusion..._ "Across the Universe" is an iconic song! To take on the challenge and perform it successfully is inspiring and applaudable! Plus, to deliver this masterpiece song and cover it with just you and the guitar, is *nothing short of sensational.* Can you imagine playing and performing this being accompanied by an orchestra! That would be an awesome experience! (Incidentally, I'd love to hear you cover "Imagine" on the piano! Now that would be epic!) It's just a treasure to know though, that you one day in the future, you'll be doing fully produced songs; hopefully with some of your own compositions! I would definitely buy your CD! 📀 This performance here is so impressive; as there's no sound processing effects to help enhance your guitar or your singing. ...There's just pure raw talent! ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Wow!!! *This is a dynamite performance!* ❗️ _PS: May I ask what guitar you're playing?_

Thank you so much for your lovely review! 😍 I borrowed my mum's Martin guitar for the recording. It was recorded live (in one take) with the Manley mic placed to capture the vocal and guitar. I probably should have used a pop shield, but that doesn't look so nice.

Hi Steve, another awesome review! It sounds like you have a nice setup for listening through. I sure enjoy reading your reviews. Emily’s voice was so perfect for this song, her vibrato worked perfectly with the timing. John died 40 years ago on the 8th, so she did this tribute for him. It was a welcome gift for me, as he was a hero of mine. She cheered up an otherwise sad day. Like you, I’m looking forward to her CD’s (and touring) too. You are absolutely right about ‘Imagine’ too. I would love to hear her do that one also. Anyway, thanks for the incredible reviews. I always look forward to seeing them, and this one was really special to me. What's astonishing is not only her voice but her ability to enunciate, every part of each word is perfectly formed, it's actually quite rare.

And that smile!!! It's as pretty as your music.

The original "Across the Universe" and this Emily Linge cover are both hors concours. When I watched this video for the first time, I thought: How much courage this girl has! When Emily performs a rendition, she does it with so much taste, natural talent and refined technique, with so much love, that she seems to say to the author, or to the original singer of the song: "Your work is very good! I will pay a fitting tribute." I'm not going to say that this is her best Beatles cover, because, as I said before, Beatles' songs and Emily Linge's covers are hors concours. Maybe when (if?) she records "Something"...

This is one of the most magical songs the Beatles ever wrote. The imagery, lyrical beauty and melody is just indefinable. Arrangement wise its all over the place with extra bars appearing and then not repeating and this wouldn't fly with professional compositions but here it just doesn't matter because nobody can write as brilliantly as the Beatles still to this day. Beautiful cover also.

I've been playing this song for over 40 years. You do a beautiful version. Very touching.

After listening to several other covers of this song, I've found that Emily is the only one that sings the lyrics so clearly that I don't need to read the words along with the singer to understand what they (even the Beatles) are trying to say.....for the first time, I love this song! John Lennon, a brilliant writer and artist. Personally he is my favorite Beatle. His writing style was absolutely fantastic. He put a lot of pain and trouble in his songs, which can be heard. But he kept a strong face and made masterpieces. And this song is one of those brilliant splinters out of his mind, which makes me shiver every time I hear it. You've performed it fantastically, Emily, so thank you for using this song to cover from John's long list of songs. Really loved it.

Incredible how you performe this one, Emily. I love this song and Johns genius musical sense. I remember that day, when the german news are crowded with reports of murdering John Lennon in New York. I was totally shocked. One of my Idols are gone. This was the first case of my life, I feld the loss, we sufferd from a long long time.

I think this is my favorite. Wonderful Emily.

Is that what the song means? I sure don’t have the answer! I enjoy reading what others find in it, though. That open interpretation, to me, is what religion and experience and love point us toward. What’s clear is that this young lady has caught the gist of the mystery, and has all the tools to bring layers of insight to an already special song. Congrats, and thanks for sharing this with us.
