That line Spider-Ham says in the first film, "The hardest thing about this job is... you can't always save everybody." carries even more weight now. Literally no spider-person can save everybody. There always has to be someone who doesn't make it. In their society, that trauma is a requirement. I was so happy to see Miles stand up against it.

The reason why I love this movie is Miles is literally against all the Spideys and tries to defy basic spider-man tropes and redefine what it means to be spider-man and since he’s the protagonist everyone sides and say Miguel is wrong (which he very well is) but don’t acknowledge how Miguel represents them and has a point about some things

It's particularly noteworthy in the context of current comics, where Marvel (the comics company) seems to have made a real, editorial decision that "Suffering" is literally the POINT of Spider-Man. We're looking at 20 some odd years now of not allowing Peter any growth, to let him start to find happiness only to take it away time and time and time again. The editorial and writing staff seem to be on this page of "If Peter isn't suffering is he really Peter" so to see a movie come out when all of that is reaching a CRAZY Peak where the real antagonist is that EXACT mindset is... interesting.

I’m a particular fan of Miles’ “2 cakes” philosophy, because it shows that he’s more than willing to take a third option that isn’t even presented as such. It’s his answer to the “have/eat your cake” problem, and to his “write smaller/talk less” problem. It’s even his answer to Pav’s “save the bus/captain” problem, where the answer is essentially “2 Spider-Men”.

I love that it looks like an emerging theme of these movies is community. Gwen couldn't have finished off the displaced Vulture alone, Pavitr couldn't have saved both Gayatri and her father alone, Miles couldn't have escaped the Spider Society without Hobie's and Margo's help, and he probably can't get back to his universe, stop the Spot and save his dad on his own. But when a bunch of Spider-People band together they can do so much more than just one alone.

One thing I loved about this movie (in addition to the other fifty thousand) is the scene where Miles is swing home. He’s absolutely rattled. He’s thinking about all the bad things that might happen, and all the things that *has* happened, but in the end he remembers his uncles words: keep going. His eyes narrow and he focuses. None of those things matter. All that matters is trying to save his dad. It’s such a good scene.

In the reflections too we see ham noir and peni. Gwen and Peter are missing as he’s trying to cut them out. The first 3 didn’t help capture him or even speak about what to do if he ran. Gwen and Peter did, they did it to try protect him. They didn’t want Miguel hurting him like he ended up doing. There “plan” likely involved letting Peter and Gwen talk to him privately. Peter nearly got to him before they tracked him. If Gwen and Peter were allowed to just talk to him in private he would have maybe listened and understood. Miguel trapping him kinda ruined everything they had planned and likely would have worked if he just let them try

Fun fact. Near the end of that scene, when Miles crashes into the windshield of a car, Uncle Ben is actually inside giving Earth 42 Peter the talk.

To me, Miles is a clear example of a young man that is still treated as a child, while being demanded to act as a man. He is more capable to take care of his own life without somwone else's will overshadowing his own. Even Gwen is fitting him within a box. (to protect him.) Especially with men, this is something that I personally see far too often; and there are numerous examples of this being done out of care moreso than ill intentions.

The quote I think had a deeper meaning. He isn’t supposed to exist as spider man so why does he need to follow the same rules? He shouldn’t, he is making his own future as he does things. He doesn’t need to have these cannon events for him as he was meant to. He already lost his uncle who to him was important to him. For Peter it’s uncle Ben. Why does he need to lose someone else?

I remembered when I was a younger working under a CEO of a small tech company he asked me if I had a ship that can save 500 ppl but they are harder to reach vs save one that is right in front of me, who would I save? I saved I would save the one because that's a sure save He said no you never save one over the many, his way of saying never focus on one customers issue for so Iong you ignore the others But my young mind is thinking... That one person could be my family members tho..

The leap of faith in the last movie shows the glass breaking...if you know how the powers work, you understand the context that he was still scared/nervous but took the leap anyway... In this movie, the self confidence and self assurance was so that he could easily let go and take that leap...and he didn't take that leap not once... BUT TWICE while a bullet train was rocketing to the moon...

Glass breaking is also a very important symbol for everything...The Multiverse isn't a linear line it's a Prism of Endless Possibilities. In the What If show the glass prism breaks and every single last shard is a separate reality. In short every single reality is a reflection and inherently broken. This second leap was also done without care or eventual correction like he did in the first one, as a person that's developed authentic love for myself and a strong belief in myself, the second leap shows you that he doesn't need to worry about how he's getting down there, he knows that he will get down there regardless of obstacles.

I could be wrong, but I think it’s a relieve to see Miles not regressed back to his original self before his character development in the first movie, something that are seen in recent Disney sequels like Ralph Breaks The Internet & Frozen 2.

Agreed. And with RBTI, with all of its faults, the one thing I really dislike is how it goes against the taboo the first movie set- going turbo. The moral of letting friends go on to do their own thing isn’t bad but not well executed for this reason, other than Ralph and Vanellope’s flanderized characters.

the best part is, they didnt do that, but they also didnt play the "love rival is better at everything" trope either. the movie tricks the watcher into thinking hobbie is gwen's love interest to compete with miles, but at every scene he shares with miles, he goes older brother, caring and helping him grow instead. at the same time, in other movies, gwen would be this perfect being, who is a trophy for miles once he becomes a hero, and instead, we her hero's journey. the even better part is, how the movie goes from miles literaly pursuing gwen, to now gwen literaly pursuing miles.

He was never serious and that’s what I like about him. He is always doing what he wants not caring what others think. If not for hin miles wouldn’t have broke free and he wouldn’t have been able to stun Miguel. He taught him a valuable lesson about his own power in a few seconds. Question is how did he know using the palms would enhance the venom blast?

I really feel like Spiderverse is telling a very different, more intimate kind of story than a lot of the other superhero media right now and I'm so down for it. It also has a very different message for young people in particular that I think is very positive. I think it's quite evident in the first movie but it comes through so strongly in the second one, especially with Miles and Gwen but also with Peter B. and even Hobie, that there's these strong themes of intergenerational trauma being passed on to these young people (Kingpin, Miguel, Gwen's dad, even Miles' parents to an extent) by older gens who won't let go, or in Miguel's case think the kids 'haven't suffered enough like we did'. And the ways in which younger people can inspire change in the older gen for the better (Peter B., Gwen's dad, Miles' parents) and how young people have to stand up for themselves and find their own story (Miles, Gwen) and have each other's backs (Hobie with Miles, Gwen and Pav). It's gorgeous.

I deeply aspire to have Miles' self assurance, that "Imma do my own thing" moment was so cathartic!

You wanna know how you can tell a movie is good? Not only does Georgia say so just in the video, but also because she has *JUMPED* onto making these videos 😆. She just made one on Gwen two days ago, and here she is already with Miles.

I would add something that tends to get overlooked. In addition to his parents + his uncle, Miles is part of a community. We see it in the first movie and this one how he is known and knows the people in the neighborhood. I think of the bodega scene with Spot and Miles talking to the owner + his dad's celebration party. To ask him to let something bad happen not only to his dad, which would be a hit to the community at large, goes against who he is and how he was raised. The communal framework emphasizes helping others. That belief system translates when he intervenes to save Inspector Singh. He saw he could help so he went to help. There's very much an individual and communal framework at play between Miles (communal) and Miguel et al. (individual). Peter Parker as shown in the movies tends to be a loner.

Miles showed us we are who we are by our choices not by the events themselves but write your own story and do your own thing

Completely unrelated to the focus of the video, but I *so* love Miguel's interaction with Peter's daughter - his face while catching her is *priceless* Coming back to this just to add: Miguel is speaking to Miles almost esclusively with hypotheticals, "if X, then Y". "If you weren't bitten, things would have been better"; "If someone else was Spiderman, they would have stopped the collider"; "If the collider didn't go off, Spot wouldn't be a problem" and so on. He is basically blaming Miles because *his* (Miguel's) perfectly ordered vision didn't come to pass. Problem is, those things happened - those chances crystalized into (if you will) "canon events". Miles, without any fault of his own, was bitten. The original Spiderman wasn't able to stop the collider. Miles and the gang, though, did - and *before* the spider-society had a chance to step in. Miguel claims he's been playing the long game and looking at everything from a vantage point, while Miles have been walking boots on the ground and trying to navigate in the maze. And despite the bird's eye view he *claims* to have (the "greater good" perspective, basically: he claims to understand risks and opportunity better than those Who would risk something or stand to benefit from opportunities) he didn't anticipate Miles' movements or counter them in any way. The point of the spider-society is to manage "the canon" and do damage control - are we really to believe they didn't have an eye on the original Spiderman of Miles' world, or didn't see how Kingpin's collider would prove dangerous?

The society was formed after the first movie. At the end of it Miguel takes the first test of his watch to travel the multiverse. After he sees more he sees the Anomaly’s in the multiverse and decided to form the society to help clear it up. After he finds out the source is earth 1610 and sees Peter is dead and miles is now Spider-Man he puts it together earth 42 doesn’t have a Spider-Man. Earth 1610 lost there’s but gained a new one and there was multiverse travels from it not too long ago. After this he makes it clear miles will never join the society

The post credits scene of the first film makes it clear that the Spider Society was not established yet. Miguel became aware of the events of the first film and scrambled to make a multiverse hopping watch, but it wasn't completed until the events of the first movie concluded.

I think that moment with confronting Miguel truly stood out and how he claims who he is and how he's going to do things in his own way reinforces what Miles said to himself earlier with fighting The Spot on how "I'm Spider-Man, and no one can take that away from me." How this moment defines his overall character with what values he stands up for is astounding in its own right. Easily one of the best written scenes of the entire film.

Also, there is an added layer when it comes to race. You have a predominantly white council of Spider people and a light skinned mixed Latino forcing a narrative and telling him that he’s a mistake. This, on part of the writers and directors, was how the character of Miles was met with dismissal via toxic fandom when his comic debut. This film is very meaty and has so many layers that make for a great film to rewatch, not only for it’s artistic and gorgeous animation, but for it’s sticky and substantial writing and characters.

There is so much subtext in the Society's leadership. They are a black woman and Latino man who are doing their damndest to exclude Miles. Before anything else, they're an inversion of Miles' parents. Miguel is a biracial Latino who is very obviously projecting his own self-loathing on to Miles, which conjures up the specters of internalized racial hatred and generational trauma. While both he and Jess are people of color, they seek to keep the trolley that is their organization adhered to the tracks first set down by a white male cis super hero, no matter the cost. There's so much to dig into there.

Not even Jessica Drew or even Ben Riley follow the Spider journey at all.

What I’ve heard has been the contrary. If you disagree, that’s you. It seems strange that every Spider person is suppose to be within the confines of the original. It’s strange that Miguel, Jessica Drew and Ben don’t follow the mold but don’t receive the criticism for being different, stronger, stranger and convoluted. Why are their gatekeepers to this IP when Stan Lee approved of the character long before his death. The point of Spider-Man being fully disguised was that anyone could wear the mask. If you don’t like Mike’s iteration, you don’t have to, but don’t make it a mission to dismiss him for breaking the mold. Comics have constructed multiverses. If everyone plays the same story, what’s the purpose to changing the character at all.

And we CAN find that strength for ourselves! While a good foundation is important, it can still be rebuilt stronger if it was never as strong to begin with

You can afford to dispense with the conditional support of others asking things you aren't comfortable providing when you have a secure base of unconditional support to draw from. You can only have the strength to endure being in a situation of 'us against the world' when you have an 'us' you can completely rely on.

Great video, Georgia! I agree, Miles is very courageous. It's so hard to go against social pressure, especially when everyone else is against oneself. I didn't connect his courage to the great job his parents did in supporting and raising him, but you're right, that makes a huge difference. And, sadly, there are so many scapegoats. As you indicated, it is so much easier to scapegoat and blame than to face the discomfort and the truth (especially, as you said, if it's caused by one's own mistakes). Some take their anger out so much or just hold it all in but still blame in other ways (and harm themselves too). And, you're right that this is what Miguel and others are doing. "His cup is already full" - Excellent description. Great points about how adrenaline can prevent healthy processing of emotions. It can definitely overwhelm the mind, especially (like what you said for Miguel) when it adds up over time (and continued practice of unhealthy coping methods). I need to watch the Gwen video! Really love how Mile’s bravery is emphasized in this video. To literally go against and say no to so many spider beings and those he cared about is amazing. To fight for himself and his loved ones against a literal multi universal army, is truly incredible. He outsmarted them all! He stood for his truth. It’s inspirational.

Okay, but Miguel saying "You're the original anomoly" is really just him projecting. His own conscious choice destroyed a universe. At the very most Miles' existance is another one of his failures. They could have easily stopped regular people in every universe from building colliders, but they didn't. They could have put safeguards in place to limit access to other universes, but they didn't. Miguel tried to say that Miles becoming Spider-man was a mistake when in reality, he's a living reminder of the greatest flaw in Miguel's logic. Miles became Spider-man and his universe/the spider that bit him's universe didn't simultaniously implode. If every world is centered around the existance of Spider-man, how can a world without Spider-man or with two exist?

That scene hit hard. I figured it was off the environment looked more damaged and dangerous. Then when I seen his mum I noticed the eye colour instantly. It played it so well. If you were paying attention you’d notice it.

Even if you didnt get it from your parents and even if your attachment style is poor you can still show slight signs of secure attachment in glimpses, my partner and I had very poor parenting which led to us triggering each other once months had passed but eventually I learned after they left me that they truly did love me and it was just a result of our unresolved matters. So I decided Id forgive them and they learned to do that and be a bit more open on what they needed and little by little we both slowly finally started gaining confidence in ourselves and each other. Ive never had a lot of unconditional support before that point so I decided to change my mindset for the next few months and I surprisingly finally felt like I could be confident and happy with what I do, and wanting them to feel the same way was definitely another driving motivator. Im just relieved now that we wont end up like our parents and we wont repeat the same mistakes.

Definitely favorite moments would be when he’s just telling Miguel to go stick it like he’ll still do his own thing no matter what’s in the bond with him and Hobie like it’s just so great plus there’s also that moment where he’s just done w Peter and gwen for lying to him, and he’s just gonna do his own thing no matter what like he’s really coming to to how pent Spider-Man and he’s not a kid like everyone keeps calling and he really is Spider-Man probably more than all the other Spider-Man and women in the society together

I love Victor Frank's book "Mans Search for Meaning." How finding and holding onto a "Why" can help one endure any "What" or "How". Faith and belief in the values that one is raised with can do amazing things in creating internal resilience. We can see that the others who look at the "greater good" vs "the common good" aren't happy with it because they are not going with their internal moral compasses.

Pls Georgia.. this subject of how to be supportive the right way is really important for us 🙂 I came from a military family.. I've learned how to have that and it is really important.. but in nowadays world it seems that can be different to teach confidence to the younglings without a imminent treat.. I've done through maths as I'm a logic person .. teaching that is ok to fail and try again .. games also I believe gives this confidence but I'm not sure how to put in real problems at school for example I've learned how to put to work overcoming bullying.. anyhow .. thanks for this video and all ur beautiful work .. Hey Georgia, this is my first time commenting, I do a lot of writing and your videos help me get into the mind of a lot of characters. It would be really cool if you could breakdown some characters from Berserk.

I've been yelling about it in other YT comments sections sonce May 31st (French release date for ATSV) and am currently yelling about it on my Tumblr blog, but Miguel going full generational trauma + having his own trauma response being a combo of surprising authoritarian streak (which is not a Miguel thing at first, and we see he's initially very cavalier about the whole dimensional travel before his own trauma of destroying a family he thought he could help by replacing his dead alternative self - that alone is both selfish and selfless because he agreed to be a surrogate father but also did it for the sake of his own desire to have a normal family/life) AND taking it out on Miles in a full on and highly public mental breakdown is extremely well done and honestly, as much as I love Miguel (and I LOVE him he's my fav along with Hobie), I want Miles to prove him wrong and even better, actually help him deal with his own self-inflicted grief. Because holy fuck Miguel was extremely out of line during the train chase, and no amount of trauma can make what he did OK. Miles standing up for himself against Miguel was outstanding and a great example of inner strength, and I want to keep cheering for him because he's amazing. Also, when Miguel tells Miles the spider was not supposed to bite him... Well, it was supposed to bite Miles Morales, just not the Earth 1610 one. So the spider technically did exactly what it was supposed to do. Food for thought on Miguel's understanding of the canon events. As a sidenote, I find it delightfully ironic that the Spider Society has an in-house therapist, because clearly Miguel hasn't been seeing him a lot when he badly needs this. Edit: a thought on Miguel compared to Miles in regard to their inner strength: on top of Miguel's self-inflicted grief, if the producers and writers intend to maintain Miguel's own life from the comics for the comics, Miguel has a mighty fucked up personal/family life. He's the produce of his mother cheating on his father with the man who later becomes his boss, his father is so abusive his mother ends up interned with severe mental issues, and there's also lots of stuff with his brothers. Miguel doesn't have the safe base Miles has, and the Spider Society is a bit of a replacement for it, although even there Miguel becomes The Boss and remains distant from others (he literally has his office on a floating platform! That's as much distance from others as one can get) while playing Big Brother at a multi-dimensional level. Miguel feels very lonely in comparison to Miles, and he expresses all of his grief and anxiety through... Major bursts of anger and even physical violence (see: the infamous chokeslam), something that tends to be associated with abuse.

Is there anything you could dissect from "Oppenheimer"?

If I remember correctly, the comic version had an uphill battle of justifying his own existence. I didn't read the comics but I can hazard a guess that it didn't come anywhere near as successful as the movie version. I also think because instead of going the live action route as most superhero films are doing right now it sets itself apart and rises above even the rayme films. In so doing achieving something really special when it comes the ever political question what if superhero but black now. It really tears down the barriers allowing other people who don't identify as miles social/culturally/racially and makes him become relatable I'm a meaningful way.

It's hard if I were Miles, I would just break up with his friends, but I respect Miles, he's a cool Spider-Man, even if he wasn't supposed to be one, he deserves to be a Spider, he's a legend

I just absolutely love how Miguel is saying the exact opposite of what Miles’s mother said earlier in the movie (which was just hours ago for Miles I think). His mother told him that there would be people who would tell him that he didn’t belong, and that they would be wrong. I really think that that must’ve been on Miles’s mind, and I wish we had some kind of snippet visual/audio flashback to it during the confrontation with Miguel. It was still an incredibly powerful moment and I absolutely adore this movie 😍😭

First of all it was King Pins faulted, he made a Mechanic all thing to go tore time and space and he was trying to bring back his dead family tore an other world and it was his faulted that there Spider man die not Miles. He was just there at the wrong time and place and he had no say in the matter and yet they think its his faulted? Also didn't he do the same thing and tried to bring back his family tore an other world? Rich coming from him since he did the same thing as King Pin did. Also you cant save everyone its inpossable to do and unrealistic. Also I kind a think your right but some people don't have a good family and still think for them self and more so there's that. They had too because no one be live in them and they had to fight for what they be live in on there own as well as there senaty too since people who are suppose to love and tack good care of them gaslight them there whole life's and only learn from the internet to find out what there mind tricks where?
