My father used these machines for 45 years, his entire career as a machinist. He always told me about them and the set-ups he was doing at work. So cool.

Respect for Your Father. Men like him were the backbone of machining before and even during cnc age. There are two of these machines down the street in a shop still pumping out parts and still feeding families. I dont think a standard cnc lathe can come close to the production times as these. But man the setups are probably a killer. Not for short runs

I set up and operated these machines for years back in the day, I danced for joy when I got onto CNC’s. That said multis cannot be beaten on cycle times even now - the dirty smelly noisy things that they are! 😂👍

My father ran acme's for 30 years then index for 10 or so. He always told me growing up "stay out of the oil" After he passed i became a cnc machinist and i watch guys on the smelly noisy things and appreciate what he did to support us.

I worked at black and decker hampstead md. Last job there ran 4 machines making chop saw gears. Ran everything from mitsubishi acme gridley, to conematic wickman with pick off at cut off position. We had 52 multi spindles till early 1980's. All had a cost tag on front of machine. Some of the big ones they bought in 70's were well over quarter million. Best job on factory floor

The shop I worked in had a 3" layer of sawdust and duckboards because of the vast amount of oil that flew out of these and the single spindles as well

I visited some Connecticut screw machine factories back in the 1960s and could not believe the working conditions with noise, heat and the air full of sprayed oil ... I trust conditions are better today with air conditioning and protective clothing or respirators!?

I spent a year working an Acme Gridley 6-spindle multi and a smaller 6-spindle New Britain. It was like working in Charles Dickens era. Had to shower up right after every shift. The oil would give you blackheads all over. Skin hated it. And noise! Wow! Thank God for hearing protection.
