Achensee, Austria. Is Achensee the prettiest alpine lake & outdoor paradise near Munich & Innsbruck?

Join us for Achensee Lake, in Austria. This gorgeous alpine lake hides in the alps in Austria’s Tirol region. Found between Munich, Germany and Innsbruck, Austria, the Achensee is a clear, turquoise lake, and undeniable jewel, known for paragliding, wind and kite surfing, and serious mountain biking. In this video we try to find out it’s the perfect outdoor paradise for less extreme sports enthusiasts, too.
We stayed in the village of Achenkirch, at the quiet end of the lake and did stand up paddle boards SUP, electric bikes or e-bikes, electric boats or e-boats and lots of hiking in Karwendel park. Susanne teaches us how to make her famous plum cake or Zwetschgenkuchen, a traditional cake from this region. In Achenkirch, we have dinner at Martin’s Bistro where they elevate a Austrian and Bavarian speciality called Steckerlfish, to a whole other level. Steckerlfish is a whole trout on a stick grilled over a wood fire traditionally served in beer gardens and at Octoberfest.
We also visit Innsbruck, Austria and Munich, Germany. In Innsbruck we eat an amazing version of Doner Kepab, made from turkey and veal at MISs Kepab.

Can you share the location of the small alpine hut you found on your pasture hike? Also, what was the starting point of the lakeside hike that you liked so much you did twice? Thanks!

Thank you for watching! The alpine hut with the honor bar is called Brundlalm and is on the same trail as Jochalm, which goes up from the Achenkirch area. At the Achenkirch end of the lake you also find Gaisalmsteig/Mariensteig trail, which is the trail with the cables that we did twice. The starting point is the parking lot on Achenkirch road near the lake-side campground. From the parking you head over the river/stream and along a field for a short distance before you join the lake. Enjoy!

Thank you for watching! We started the hike around the lake from the Wanderparkplatz Achenkirch at the Achenkirch end of the lake. And the bike ride around the lake from the Scholastika parking lot, also at the AchenKirch end of the lake. There's a local hiking and biking map, which is great to have with you even though the paths are sign-posted. Unfortunately, since we borrowed ours from our host, we don't know where they're sold locally. Have a wonderful trip!

Lake Achensee has some of the most amazing coloration to be seen in a lake, is it caused by the lake bed material or glacial melt water sediments? So green compared to California, jealous 😉

Thanks for watching! That light limestone of the surrounding mountains does the trick! I heard that the sides of the lakes are so steep its considered a fiord, too.
