It's amazing that those old HDDs are still working. This is a fascinating video, as well as the abandoned gas station vid.

Those computers must be a fascinating time capsule, love that you actually put in the effort to boot them up and take a look. Always a good time when you upload a video.

would be interesting to bring a UPS power pack which can Provide AC voltage to the computers in question and boot them up as if the building had electricity, just a thought... however they are quite heavy

You probably don't want to connect these hard drives to your personal computer due to malware risk. I would get a separate computer and wipe after every trip.

Considered using Linux? Apart from more the more efficient resource usage which would result in longer battery life, at least do it for the aesthetic lol. I mean you already have a blacked out ThinkPad and all. Also if you're doing such stuff, you'd probably at least want an such an OS that doesn't spy and phone home on literally everything its users do [this sentence is more an argument of _Privacy_ rather than _Secrecy_ which is in your case but hey you get the point :)]. You can still run Windows games on Linux through Wine or virtual machines (VMs). IMO if you'd actually come with a full set of Windows VMs (e.g. Win1-3, 95, 98, 2k, Me, XP, Vista, 7-8), you'd probably get a better compatibility for every single game you encounter, compared to just trying to run all the games on Windows 10. If you want a plug-and-play app for running VMs, "GNOME Boxes" is a quick and easy one. Also if you don't already use Linux, you can just pick Ubuntu (it's the easiest one).

P.S. ever tried booting the old hard disks directly from your laptop? (I.e. plug hard drive into laptop, power on laptop while tapping boot device key, select option to boot from external hard drive.) May or may not work but perhaps worth a try.
@myron7642

P.S. P.S. If booting externally you'll probably need to enable BIOS/legacy boot through your computer's UEFI settings.
