CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Bartleby (Justin Long) argues passionately that freedom and creativity are more important than "fancy highbrow traditions."
FILM DESCRIPTION:
When the weight of rejection begins to set in after being denied entry to every college he has applied to, a high school burnout attempts to placate his mom and dad and win the heart of his dream girl by scheming with his friends to create a fake university in a hilarious comedy of artificial education directed by Steve Pink and starring Justin Long. Bartleby "B" Gaines (Long) is a high school senior whose street smarts just never seemed to translate into the classroom, and whose bad luck in love has left him pining for the unattainable Monica (Blake Lively). When Bartleby and his rebellious crew of outcasts find the frequent college rejection letters they have all been receiving bringing endless grief from their disappointed parents, they soon band together to create the fictional South Harmon Institute of Technology. After creating a believable façade in an abandoned psychiatric hospital, employing the talents of a close friend's brilliantly subversive uncle (Lewis Black) to pose as the dean, and creating a phony website in order to sell the school to their parents, Bartleby and friends soon realize that all of their hard work has paid off in ways than they never imagined. With a variety of college rejects attempting to enroll in classes at the ersatz university and the skepticism of some privileged students from a nearby college drawing unwanted attention to the South Harmon Institute of Technology, Bartleby and friends find their ruse becoming ever more difficult to maintain.

Jay Vee Buniel I feel you.. the truth is that they both exists around the world in many schools! they may not be as ideal as shown in this movie. But they are pretty close... But those kinda education institutions are not sought out by parents or children. They go with the flow and join the next best seemingly lucrative course only to regret later. But above all, our responsibility lies in our hands. We all can choose to have a personal/work life around things in which we are good at, passionate about or believe in.. We all have a choice.

Probably the most accurate part of the speech was at 0:58. I strongly agree with that because even in most art related programs at colleges they tell you all these rules you must follow when creating something but yet they don’t really allow any real creativity to be expressed. At least that’s my experience and it’s quite sad too.

Ikr? I wanted to take up Philosophy or Psychology because I wanted to interact with people and do outreach programs and travel for a living. But my dad urged me to go to law school though, says that there isn't any money in what i wanted. But he had a point to me that let myself be secure atleast in my job as a lawyer and ONLY THEN should i permit myself to follow that dream since he told me that kind of dream demands me to be rich or atleast middle class stable. At first i hate the idea but you know, i'm loving where i am now because i know so many things not many people do and i get to give if not correct answers to problems--rather viable legal opinions and advice to people i know who have problems. Kind of like my mom (god rest her soul) since she wanted to be an architect. She was however forced to be a doctor. She hated it at start but in the end fell in love with her duty of saving lives and being here for people. Maybe what we always see narrowly is not the only way. Maybe it's good to be secure and play safe BEFORE we risk following our dreams. Just sharing my opinion.

honestly I love this movie. it hits so close to home, now I haven't gone to college or anything. but the feelings of rejection and like my creativity is being stripped away is something that has kinda always been there. teachers always complain about kids needing help and using crutches to get by in school like cheating or whatever else they say, but they don't realize not only are they making it worse, but they started it. this is also how kids become desensitized. they are being stripped of their passion for things and their emotions and turning into robots. we just don't care about things like we used to. and if we do care about things, sometimes people go about it in the wrong way and feel that shoving it down somebody's throat is the best way to do it. they shove their ideals into somebody's and keep doing it until somebody agrees and passes laws about it. it opens a gateway for so many things that shouldn't even be asked about. like the right to be able to have sex with animals. I'm sorry if you or somebody you know does this, but having sex with animals is disgusting. I may be acting judgmental and harsh about that, but it's my opinion. if I get a pet, I don't want my neighbor to have sex with it, and not get any retribution because it's legal. it's horrible. now, I'm gonna stop here, this has turned into a rant, and if I keep on going i may never stop

But the system does suck and if you payed attention to the whole movie it explains why throughout the whole thing. The speech here is just a summation (like a conclusion to an essay) of an entire movie specifying how AND why the system sucks. The finer details are explained throughout the whole movie itself. The speech is warm and fuzzy because deep down people know it's right based on the evidence provided throughout the entire movie. It's hardly vague, and indeed, well thought out.

There is so much beauty in imperfection. Flaws and failures make us human. They make us alive. A life where one constantly seeks perfection is no life at all. To anyone reading this, you are a wonderful, flawed, & remarkable human being!“To thine own self be true.” - Polonius (Shakespeare’s Hamlet). ❤️

If you think about it, this could be a perfect metaphor for gay marriage vs. different sex marriage. Why can't they both exist? Why does one have to be just like the other, why can't they have their marriage and we have ours? Why do we have to conform to what the other side wants? They do things their way and we do things our way. I'm personally not gay myself, but I think I speak for a lot of people out there.
