ACA Allertor 125 Siren Test Greenfield, WI 7/09/08
Ғылым және технология
Test of an ACA Allertor 125 in Greenfield, WI. This siren is part of the Milwaukee County Outdoor Warning System, and is controlled by Milwaukee County Emergency Management. I was happy to hear the attack signal, which isn't tested often around here.
This siren has a broken rotator, which will likely spell its demise. I decided I had to record it before it gets replaced, most likely by a T-128. Greenfield used to have 3 Allertors, and a P-10, but this and one other Allertor are the only two left. The other two sirens were replaced by ASC T-128's. I hope this one gets fixed rather than replaced.

UPDATE 9/1/10:
To everyone who was interested in the fate of this Allertor: I am sad to say this siren is now gone. It was never fixed, but instead replaced. As of the last week or so, brand new T-128 was installed a few feet from where the Allertor used to stand. I do not yet know what has happened to the Allertor, but I will do my best to find out and acquire it for restoration if possible.

Yep. It's actually a perfect demonstration of why ACA changed the shroud design to the P-10/15. Rainwater or melting snow runs down the projector and air intake and collects in the "donut" shape around the rotor. In areas with cold winters, this water freezes and siezes up the rotor. Here, you see rainwater being forced out of the projector when the rotor first winds up. It's neat because it sort of shows how the air flows through these sirens.
Thanks, glad you like it. Allertors are very special to me. I once heard this one in particular sound a warning for straight line winds about 8 years ago. I was exiting the walmart store a block away when it was sounding in attack. Hearing it at night with the lightning and wind was a really cool experience. Growing up, I used to hear an Allertor about a mile from my house during warnings and tests. That one's gone now but those two Allertors really began my interest and love for tornado sirens.
Siren starts to rotate and it's like oh there is a squirrel I think I'll look over there

I hope you will find it and get repaired and you could have it for your own
Nice videography! Very clear picture & sound! You can even see the debree falling from the outlet!
The best sounding mechanical siren ever built. For you guys into Federal sirens, you need to hear one of these sirens up close. They will blow you away.
Hey, that was smart AND original. Two great qualities in one special person! Good for you!
They do sound similar, but you can easily tell their sounds apart. Both are 9/12 port dual tone sirens, but the ACA rotors are configured so the 12 port side faces out (closer to the air intake), so it gets more air and the higher tone is more prominent. Federal Signal's 9/12 rotors were the opposite configuration, with the lower 9 port side facing out, allowing the low tone to be slightly more powerful than the high. SD10's and 9/12 500AT's have a lower, more ominous sound to them.
Great Video. Love the sound of the allertor and I hope it gets fixed and not replaced.
Those are my thoughts exactly. The funny thing is, Greenfield had a complete Allertor sitting in their city yard for several years which could have been used for that very purpose. This spring, they decided to sell it on ebay. It went for more than I was willing/able to pay, or I'd have gladly purchased and restored it. Regardless, it looks like they have no intention of fixing this siren and will most likely just replace it. I don't want to see it go.
in addition to the sirens mentioned, there are several privately owned ones, including a Sentry used by a cold storage company for chemical leaks, and a Model 2T sounded by its owner for tornadoes. There are still several Model 2's left on poles from the old system, although they are not active.
That makes alot of sense RamFett. Thanks for the reply. I understand how the rotation works. Hopefully the fire dept. will be willing to fix it.
It did a few days before the test took place. The water actually sat in there for a while. That's actually sort of an achilles heel of this shroud design, because in winter, that water freezes and causes the rotor to sieze up, making the siren inoperable.
damn that has to be the loudest siren ive heard yet! May it's spirit still ring inside my ears.
They are special to me too. When i was 7 , and I was in Madison, I was just exiting a hardware store with my dad. I heard an Allertor 125 going off for a tornado warning. It got my into tornado sirens too.
have you seen if this siren is still up? il b in wisconsin on saturday if you want to know.
@concertinanickz The working theory is that ASC took this siren when it was replaced, refurbished it (including fixing the rotator) and put it back in service with gray paint, ASC logos and a new steel pole in South Milwaukee. A new Allertor went in service there not too long ago, this was the most recently removed one in the area, making that case a good possibilty. Of course, that's only a theory at this point. Either way, its great to see an old Allertor fixed up and used again.

Never really thought about it but, is the top horn where the sound comes out of, and the bottom one where it pulls air in?
what are the two holes is the top one for sound and the bottom on for intake
@RamFett does the siren not also blow alot of Air?....i mean the Chopper is basically a very noisy Fan.
When I was younger they had one of these down the street, man that is a siren with balls that will put the fear of god into you. Best regards Marmaloon.
@RamFett The Siren is made of Fiberglass....which means the Color is impregnated into the Material so why is there a need to Repaint a Siren made of Fiberglass when the Color is imbedded into the Sirens housing?
@RamFett hey i live in marylnad hyatsvile how come we never have torando serins like u guys do?
@RamFett How Does the Rotator Gear Get Stripped?....also what HP and DB @ 100 Feet is the Allertor?
What is the HP number of a normal allertor?
What makes this type of siren rotate? An actual motor or does it rotate from rotating of the internal parts?? (if that makes any sense) I saw a video of another one of these sirens earlier and now this one. I imagine it would be a very simple fix to get that siren rotating again.
Milwaukee County is covered by 51 sirens, owned by municipalities and the county itself. All are ACA/ASC products controlled & activated by the county via Compulert. The majority of them are P-50's/T-135AC's & Allertor 125's, with a few P-10's/15's as well. There are also T-128's and a T-135AC/DC, which are newer ones. A couple of oddball sirens are included as well, including a Hurricane 130 Mk II and an Alertronic 4000, The old system was model 2's and early allertors/mobil directos.
How many ACA alerters Are in Milwaukee
@RamFett I remember seeing a B&N Mobil Directo siren that looks like an Allertor, did they buy the design too?
How may sirens exactly are in Milwaukee. Are there like 30 or something because you describe so many.
Your saying whelen sirens fall apart when there is hail?
@RamFett do u know anyone who could tell me what the siren is
ill never forget the allertor out front of my school went off. scared the crap out of everyone. Where in the world can i get an allertor? and for around how much?
i was still in the greenfield middle school when it went off. and that was a fucked up month too alot of rain and wicked tornadoes. man greenfield is a beautiful city.
Why does every allertor 125 have that platform on the pole ?
Do you mean hitting the maintenance platform? That's definitely not it. There's likely a stripped rotator gear that can't propel the siren beyond a certain threshold of resistance. As you can tell from the plants blowing around, the wind was pretty strong out of the west the day i recorded this. Notice that the rotation stops when the siren points south. That's when it's got the most surface area facing the wind and encounters the most resistance, hence the stall and reverse in direction.
Is that water or something blowing out shortly after it goes off?
how do u guys know so much about sirens?
Anyone what these things are rated for in terms of sound?
Why the rotater stopped
ill tell you one thing: Milwaukee County has/had some of the best sounding allertors ive ever heard. anyone know what happened to the one in whitnall park in greendale?
Glad it got fixed. Other then the rotator issue it sounds like a very healthy allertor.
is that at zablocki park?
Yes. They don't do that often, it's actually the only time I've ever heard attack for a weather event, but there were very srong (80mph+) winds rushing ahead of a severe thunderstorm. We got blasted by it while loading up the car in the Walmart parking lot about a minute after the sirens shut off. I wanted to go back into the store and take cover because there was so much debris and stuff blowing around. The car (a crappy little mercury tracer) got shaken around pretty well. That was damn scary.
i dont mean to sound ignorant but what was the liquid comeing out of the siren
wasn't there a hurricane siren in greenfield once?
@RamFett Where in S. Milwaukee ?
Why is this siren doesn't rotate normally?
I know the Allertor was most common in the Midwest. We have them in PA also, as part of the nuclear power plant siren system. Does anyone know if they have ACA Allertor's or Banshee's in any southern states?
Two other things. Was the wind pushing it a few degrees, or was it the rotator? Does Milwaukee still have any Allertors before the rotator was in the design?
Anyone know if they ever made these sirens in black?
is that water coming out of the thingy hole?
Err...I'm not sure what a "rade" is, or why "i only spinning 80 degrees" but yes, the rotator on this siren is not working.
Hey, what happened to the allertor?!? Did u buy it or does tht county still have it?
why must they replace ACA allertors
Wait, doesnt Clayton Werden Paint his P-127s Black?
Milwaukee's testing has been odd this year. The county's system has been updated for localized activations, so the two summer tests were of only specific parts of the system. Apart from that, I couldn't get out of work on those test days. I will try and record the green Allertor, it is easily accessible, And there should be a test of it in October, which I will ask off work for. As for a blue one, what do you see in this video?
does it's chopper motor power its rotator?
One way a teacher can wake up a student sleeping in class😂

at least for a siren enthusiast
I have asked Cedar Rapids MULTIPLE times about parts they had laying around or old broken units and they said they've never had to have parts. The only sirens that needed to be replaced were the ones that were underwater during the flood. And we have a system of old 3016s and 4004s.
Whats wrong with the rotator?
these can collect rain?
It's owned by a city, actually. They have the parts to fix it (there's a complete spare Allertor just waiting to get used), but haven't done anything yet. There's a park right across the street from the Allertor that will likely have an ASC T-128 installed in the not-too-distant future.
Absolutely. How else would it make sound?
Do you have footage of the new T-128 that's there now?
Indeed. And for all who might be interested, this siren hasn't been fixed or replaced yet.
You must have been sitting int he parking lot of the theatre for this one. I said to my wife that it sounds like the siren by Organ Piper, and sure enough!
Are T-128s like a dual tone 2001 or something? Either way, they kick Federal's ass.
Check the date in the video title. Not much ice around in July. That's water that had collected in the siren from rain that fell a few days previous.
Broken chain drive?
Yes sir, that's how they work. The lower front opening lets the air in, which goes through the chopper, and carries the sound up and out of the projector on the top.
@form109 I've suspected that ACA only produced yellow fiberglass for their sirens, and that any other colors that customers might have requested were simply painted on. I don't know if that's actually the case or if municipalities simply paint over them. Many now consider civil defense yellow sirens to be eyesores, and will repaint them for that reason. I'm not sure what the case is here.
sounds sorta like what happened to the 2 Thunderbolt sirens, update the siren at the Louisville Water Company Reservoir is a. Federal Signal 2001 tornado siren.
@TJboi98 I don't know why...Maryland does get tornadoes too so they should have some sort of warning system in place. Milwaukee's sirens were originally purchased for the cold war and have been maintained, replaced, added and updated to be used for tornadoes ever since.
So you're saying somebody replaced the guts (motor, rotor/stator assy,. rotator) but kept the same shroud as an Allertor 125? That's the first I've ever heard of something like that. Possible to do, but not very practical.
Nice man. Goodluck. Hopefully it works out for you. If you do you have to keep us updated :)
Yep, that's rainwater that's collected in the bottom of the siren. When it activates, the rotor spins and agitates the water, sending it spraying and dripping out of the projector at the top.
I'm not entirely sure if it has been fixed, but this siren no longer swings back and forth freely in the wind. In the last couple weeks I've seen it twice in the same position now, both times in windy weather. This may be a good sign.
Has it ever been fixed or replaced?
Nice video. VERY nice tone.
It’s sad to say, google street view doesn’t show this anymore, it shows the t128 that replaced this
Would be cheaper to fix it rather then junk it. How much does a siren cost anyway?
So the rotation is fixed. There was an Allertor near me tha was not rotating at all for a few years(sirenzrok filmed it), and instead of it being repaired, it was replaced with a T-128 very recently! It was the county's only Allertor, and there aren't any left!
Is the rotator broken?
The reason I have no siren recordings is because I live in the Northeast US, so we only have a Whelen system a town away, and they don't test it very often.
@form109 I don't know for sure, but I'd guess something along the lines of rotating against strong winds to the point of damage, unlike belt -driven sirens which will eventually give way and prevent damage. Allertors come in 10 and 15hp, rated at 125db as measured from 100 feet.
It's such a shame that this siren got replaced. 😔
You're sooooooooooo lucky. I have to put up with my county's all-2001 siren system. Meanwhile, across the river in Kansas, I spotted a Thunderbolt and SD-10. (not sure if the latter still works, given the condition I found it in.)
Did anyone notice that it failed to completely rotate all the way around?
Isn't that supposed to rotate 360 degrees?
Did you report this to the EMA?
There must be something loose in the rotator I think.
Two things. 1) that siren kinda looks like a toilet which is a convenience design. XP. 2) why is it only doing 1/4 of a rotation instead of a full rotations like all the other siren does?
This siren looks like it has seen better days
@RamFett dude, i know ur an expert with sirens, so i have a favor to ask of you. I wanted to know if you could identify the siren in this video. search arod 594 and click on the first link. the siren starts at 36 seconds. It owuld mean so much for me. thank you.
You describe a lot of these sirens, but you have taped very few in Milwaukee. It's been quite awile since you have taped any siren. You should tape these allertors that are light green and blue. I would love to see them!
I never heard it, but it probably was the same 9/12 port version as all the rest in Milwaukee county.
I'm not sure. It looked like it was trying to turn towards me, but the wind kept pushing it back. I actually freaked out when I got to the siren before the test because I saw it moving while driving to the spot I wanted to record it from. I thought maybe the test went off early, but it was just moving around in the wind. There are no pre-rotating allertors left in Milwaukee.
What happen to the siren it is old household rebuild a new on like a yellow 👌
I've seen a Allertor rotatate. It Doesn't act like a whelen and start spinning one way then another. Plus it barely rotated at all.
