Abstract Originals | How to Create Miniatures and Make Great Greeting Cards to Sell.
Moving on with last week's thoughts and ideas on subdividing your watercolour papers up into smaller segments to practice with, I also mentioned that some may be useful as gifts or items to sell.
Well in this week's tutorial, I wanted to show you how I create some of my cards as products to sell through my gallery, website, and indeed my Etsy shop.
I take you through the whole process, minus some of the very tedious bits.
As I stated in the video here is a link to my new course, learning to paint skies in watercolour. on offer at this time for only £67 for over 7 hours of great content. That's £30 off of the regular price.

I’m an acrylic artist, but this gave me wonderful ideas for cards using acrylics rather than watercolor. Thanks for sharing! They are beautiful! I use my tape gun that I would typically use for framing to put the cards on. Works great and less messy.

I loved your comment about the lady and her father who saw battleships in one of your art pieces. I make textile art and hand embroidered the outline of an elephant with a sunset hand stitched inside. A lady and her daughter bought it because they saw the sunset which reminded them of the grandmother who had passed who went on a safari and their love of elephants. It made me happy that they saw something that was of significance/meaning to them even if it was different to what i was seeing. Thank you for the amazing video. I love love your work.

When gluing the back of painting I use a magazine. You can glue all the way to edges easily and quickly. Don’t worry about mess because you just turn the magazine page for next gluing process.

I always look forward to your videos. I really appreciate at how thorough you are and have learned so much from what you share here. Above all else, you inspire me to get out my paints and enjoy painting! I never painted abstract before, but I really loved doing these small abstracts like you made. It takes a bit to pick out the right colors I want for each one. I never knew there was as much involved in the actual abstract paintings. Thank you for helping me explore more of the world of art that I would not have done without you doing this video.

These are lovely. Thanks for sharing. I stick the paintings on to the cards using two strips of double-sided sticky tape. People have told me that it is easy to remove the painting from the card for placing in little frames when required.

Oh, and I only attach it from the top not the entire mini-painting or photo This is often done (used to work in a gallery) with mounting larger watercolors prior to matting. And allow, attaching a photo or piece to a wide mat works very well .

Hello, New subscriber here :) Found you when I found your abstract people tutorial-I'm learning and found it fun! This also I absolutely love. I've done something like this with my watercolour, however I'm trying to loosen up a bit. Also about your glue. I'm a card maker and many, many card makers use the same stick clue you are using. I personally prefer not to because after about a year things start to pop off the page. There is a double sided tape card makers use that is quite strong and I use it in a pinch, but beware once it's down it is not repositionable so you have to get it right the first time. You can look for Sookwang tape or anything similar and it comes in different widths. My glue of choice tho is Nuvo Deluxe Adhesive. Pva Glue or a glue that is not waterbased would work great, too. I find it more cost effective and you really only need a thin bead around the edge vs. tons of glue all over. It usually gives a few seconds to adjust or slide into position if not quite straight and after dries quickly. One more option is to use what is called 'dimensionals' (usually on a small sheet) or 3M foam tape that comes in a roll (more expensive, but is great). They both are padded foam with adhesive on both sides that bumps up your art off the card. It makes for more interest if you feel like something different. Your cards are really great and have encouraged me to try some in abstract to add to what I already do :))) Question please...1: Do you seal your cards or watercolour in general and how? Thank you again- I think I'm going to enjoy the your channel :)....btw, your computer mouse made me chuckle ;)

Really nice abstracts and great idea for sales. Would be v hard for an unknown artist to justify your price I think? As you are very talented and can showcase some stunning artworks plus have a following and gallery therefore have excellent credentials.

Hi Phillip, Pricing is and will always be a hard one to work out and settle upon. the one thing you have to think about is the time it takes from start to finish and all the components involved, and adding a little for your trouble, not forgetting commissions, etc, so yeah I get you, but if people love what you do they will pay whoever you may be. That's what I feel, cheers P

Paul, the Junk Journal artists (here on YT) set out an old thrift shop paperback book and use it as a glue book... tearing off the page after each gluing ... really helps keep things tidy 😁 Also, are you dipping your credit cards in freshly squeezed out tube paints or .... ? Thanks for sharing your process and wonderful art! I am a mixed media and textile artist but I’m trying to practice my watercolor and your channel has been so helpful. I was just wondering if you could recommend a scanner for scanning your art? I currently use an SLR camera and take photos but am investigating investing in a scanner. P.S. I enjoyed seeing your studio buddy at the end.

Hello thank you so much for this! I am a beginner watercolour artist and have a brother in law who has printed some of my images onto cards and friends have loved my cards given as gifts and advised me to keep going! In your experience do you sell more originals or prints as cards? And finally just how much practise did you do before you launched trying to sell your art? Thank you so much in advance for any wisdom and direction.

About originals overprints, I sell more originals but it is good to have products at all price points. That last question is a big one, I have painted and practised all my life since a child, and all the way until 1986 then turned professional, it can be a hard road to travel, with lovely things happening from time to time. just turn over every stone you find, cheers P
