I paint primarily small (in watercolor, my past acrylic work was quite large) for several reasons... the first being cost of both supplies and framing. The second is time, I can finish a work in a single setting, or two, and move on to the next which is enjoyable for me. Third it takes away a lot of the fear of a failed painting. Fourth it's easier to display smaller art just from a wall space perspective. Fifth you seldom ever have to stretch paper. I have found some tips that may help. First use appropriately sized brushes. Work out the math and consider the expected size of your paper when purchasing.. you can save a ton of money by choosing the original size that allows you to cut/tear the size you want without waste... for example an imperial sheet gives you 5x7's with no effort, if you want 6x9 consider a 9x12 pad. Avoid blocks if you are trying to save money, it's no different than taping paper down and if you really want the block simply make your own out of your presized paper (google). Aim for works that fit premade frames in standard sizes (with matting or without). Matting makes your painting larger, however keep in mind the ratio of mat to frame to picture... a mat or frame (or the combination of the two) that is too large will make your painting seem small. I find a contrasting mat looks better than one that matches your background.. and pick one that pulls a color from your painting for cohesiveness. Avoid far away perspectives, zoom in on your subject. Consider vignettes, they look amazing in small format.

Wow you made that cloudy sky look so simple putting it in the painting. I am loving the colors you are choosing to mix together to get your greens. This is really a great simple & quick looking landscape that I could actually attempt to try to paint. I really appreciate you sharing about how these smaller size paintings would be great to sell in addition to the regular bigger pieces. I prefer to work with the small 5 inches x 7 inches, or 4 inches x 6 inches sizes as well as the 9 inches x 12 inches or larger. Thanks for sharing this wonderful fun video. I am inspired to try this!

Brilliant! This is simply perfect info for painting to fit a mat to fit commercial frames. I've been buying good quality, watercolour, paper, in large sheets, and cutting into half, quarters, etc. Great, or so I thought; good use of good, quality, paper. Yet my paintings are not the size to fit any standard mats or frames. Live and learn! :) Now to sort this out for more practical sizes to paint for mats to sell. Thanks very much! :)
