    ​@@ThePattapoil 3 choses à condition que les planches soient bien rabotées : L'outil dans le trou central aide à faire un trou droit (90°), les tourillons s'ils sont équidistants servent à caller le guide pour qu'il soit au milieu de la planche de bois, et enfin ça sert à aller plus vite en évitant d'avoir à mesurer et marquer.

    For anyone watching, you don't have to use a full on bearing for this. It doesn't spin, it's glued in. Bearings cost more than a simple steel collar. A steel collar is like 1/4 the cost.

    But you can find bearings around the house for free if you or your kids have old roller skates, blades, skateboards, scooters, etc.

    @@BadOmenRGV Right, but a collar or even just a simple spacer or bushing at the hardware store is like $2 or less if you don't have any of that shit lying around, or you don't feel like ruining whatever you take it out of. I understand what you are saying.

    The *outside* ring of the bearing is glued in and does not spin. The inner ring of the bearing, that is touching the drill, is not glued. It will spin. Allowing the inside ring to spin means you are nicer with the drill bit.

    The bearing did it! Yes, must be a bearing and not just a hole...dowels should be steel, wood wears out.

    I think any imperfection in centering the bearing between the two dowels will be canceled out if you make sure the same dowel is against both mating faces. It'd be a good idea to mark the dowels to facilitate this. The drilled holes might not be perfectly centered between the edges, but it doesn't matter as along as they are both the same distance from their mating edges.

    ​@@ashleypowell8066 I guess what I mean is, you can have the line in "the window" so to speak, but it might not be dead center in the bearing. I guess for what it's for it would be close enough and this jig is pretty versatile when it comes to different widths of boards. Nice idea.

    Apparently pretty cheap. A quick Google search shows a single bearing can cost under 1USD. Of course you have to buy a pack of them, but cheap nonetheless.

    You can buy a jig from a number of woodworking supply houses that will cost LESS than that bearing, offer different drill diameter sizes through inserts, be made of metal, and be more accurate.....SO WHY BOTHER DOING THIS ?? And the way the glue was applied to the bearing....was it meant to "lock it" from turning (kinda good..??) as well as keeping in place or not ?

    Is it? I feel like it should still just twist until it's all lined up and ought to be centered. But Mayne my brain is bottoming out. Were I to have the stuff already, I'd make me a few sizes. But it seems like one of those abstract brain things where maybe it doesn't actually add up in all the ways it makes sense conceptually
