The "Average" listener when this came out was a lot more discerning than the "Average" listener of today. This is true music art... not the cut and paste Pro Tools fakery that exists today. I was 15 years old when this came out, and I knew it was pure greatness then!

I'm nearly 50 years old but I don't agree with comments like this but only because I've found loads and loads of new bands making amazing music, and using real instruments. Many are inspired by 70s and 80s bands, and they are superb. Now pop music was always made for 13-23 year olds, but other music has always been good, and continues to be in 2024.

@@davidhuggan6315 I'm 70, and grew up with the phenominal ( and mediocre) bands of the time, and listening to what even the "superb" groups put out today is like listening to the mediocre bands of decades ago, or they just sound like they are trying to recreate a certain band's sound. The great band, likeSuper'tramp, were unique in their style and sound, and were great at carving out their own place.

Crime of the Century is Supertramp's MASTERPIECE Album! From start to finish every song is an incredible journey. When songs blend together from one to the next so brilliantly, its a crime (of the century) to not let it just keep playing until the album is over.

'School' nails the British middle class state school experience of the mid 1970s, where school is a sausage machine and conformity is demanded and rewarded. It can be contrasted with 'The Logical Song' five years later, which looks as the private boarding school experience, which has its own traumas. 'School' is freshly resonant today as the current crop of politicians have rebuilt a very similar system, with even less wiggle room for the child who can't, or won't, fit in.

Can't go wrong with Supertramp. Loved to listen to them with my roommates back in the '70s. This band and Genesis held our attention. 'School' and 'The Logical Song' are my favs. Eccentrically groovy. "Layered" is a good description of their music, much like my favorite band, Genesis. Supertramp could drop into some funky grooves but you never knew where it would go.....except well.

Here's the thing about Supertamp, and about their 3rd album, Crime of the Century. You giving your reaction to their music, it's the same as mine when I first heard them back in 1973. They are DOPE. Some history: Back then there were high end stereo/audio stores. If you were a serious audiophile, these places were the only place you shopped for audio equipment. Each place had sound proof listening rooms where the store rep could activate exactly the turn table you wanted to hear, the speakers, amps, tuners, EQ's, ....everything by hitting switches. You could being in your own albums to play to hear the sound system you wanted to buy. If you didn't bring your own albums in, EVERY STORE had a selection of the best produced most technically perfect albums you could borrow in order to hear the equipment you were thinking of buying at its finest sound. These albums were the finest examples of sound perfection. The albums these stores always had in hand: Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon Steely Dan - Aja Supertramp - Crime of the Century

🔊🔊🔊🎛️ When my then-boyfriend, now ex-husband, picked up this album when it first came out, we were invited by a fellow tavern owner in the area to come over and play it on his new stereo system. We let him put it on the turntable and select the volume (well...none of us Knew...) And when that opening crescendo hit - the speakers blew. In just a musical moment in time, he needed another pair of speakers. 😅 Easy to look back and laugh now but we were horrified at the time, especially cuz we couldn't listen to the rest of the album! 😢😅 🔊🔊🔊😮

I too was in high school when this album came out. It was and is a masterpiece. The song school as well as most of the album received a lot of AirPlay on FM radio which was not confined to the more commercial mass consumption format of AM radio. The song, album & group were very popular in Canada. The pop hit from this album was Bloody Well Right. But every song is good to outstanding. School, Rudy and Dreamer stand out. Way back in the 70's when I had little money a fun friday night was making the rounds to the high end audio shops and checking out their sound rooms. Just about guarantee this LP was in every one of them. I wonder how many sets of pricey speakers were sold because of this song ? 🤣

This album was more like progressive rock. A unique sound! You need to try songs such as Even In The Quietest Moments and Give a Bit

Dude, the title track is a groovy headspace. No-one ever does it though.

The funny thing is the lines “Don’t be out too late. Don’t let it get too dark.” would never be said now. Kids aren’t allowed to play on their own in a park until it gets dark.

This probably became a top radio songs in Spain because Roger was touring in his 60s and played live there.

Thanks to start reaction to the full album and love you honest reaction, Congratulations. It would be interesting if someone also reacted and analyzed the covers themselves, some authentic works of art, like the one for Crime of the Century, are so interesting and amazing. More than once bought the album because it was spectacular of the drawing, photo or composition of the covers. Great artists done those art pieces. Keep on rocking

This tune is, to me, just the first third of what I consider one song. 'Bloody Well Right' & 'Hide in Your Shell' are the other 2 parts. They blended them together into one 17 minute song, IMHO. There are no gaps.

one of my favorite songs on one of my favorite albums. you're right tho, this kind of song would not do well today with people's short attention spans.

Such a classic album and this being the lead off song was a great way to get the party started. One of my favorite songs of theirs. I mean, piano solo? C’mon!

I have been fortunate enough to have seen Supertramp “The Tramp” Live 4 times. Their live shows are a spectacle and brilliant. Each member is a musical genius. Rick Davies is my favorite keyboards player and John Helliwell is favorite Sax player. He is a blast to watch live. The bass and drummer are awesome and Roger’s guitars are superb. The only live show I put above Supertramp is Pink Floyd, who I have seen 4 times.

Looking forward to the release of the rest of your reactions to this album on YT (I hope that you will be doing that?) because there is not a disappointing track on it. Come to think of it it is hard to think of a disappointing Supertramp track on any album between this one and the split of Rodger and Rick.

I'm aged so l can tell you exactly how we used to experience music back then. First off the stereo had to be at least 300 watts (old school watts was louder). Lava lights, black lights etc. was very nice. Then of course either fine weed or hash. That worked awesome.
