The rapid melting of the Greenland and Antarctic ice is far more life-threatening than the public realizes.

Its crazy that even with all this well known data, people still can't/refuse to understand.

I call it - anthropocentrism - the belief that humans are above/separate from the rest of the natural trophic order; perpetuated by political and religious ideologies; that humans are somehow 'special' and unlikely to become extinct; that humans cannot possibly go extinct because of their technological prowess and besides, humans are destined to colonise the galaxy... Or this quadrant of it. Reality check - Most if not all extant terrestrial and pelagic organisms will be extinct before the close of this century, if not sooner... The the current ongoing mass extinction - caused by one species - Homo sapiens-colossus - will likely become Earth's FINAL MEE.

Thanks Jason. You're not the only voice of truth, but there aren't many...

Thank you Jason for the work you have done and continue to do even when faced with such truths as this. If certain conditions were met such as enough fresh cold water flowing off of Greenland in large enough volume with a fast enough flow rate to shut down the AMOC a glacial period in the northern hemisphere could be a result. Think Younger Dryas. In any event "thanks for all the fish".

the oil, I learned today, was put down at a time where termites and lignin eating insects did not yet exist, so there will not be another large reserve of oil created on earth. somehow that seems poignant.

That also means there will not be another industrial civilization on Earth. Industrial civilization was just a spark in human history caused by fossil fuels and now it is fading for good.

Even with the melting of Greenland this year with at least 3 days of 50% melt, the NSIDC keeps an article posted dated mid-June saying the melt season is off to a modest start.

The Arctic Ice acts like the ice cubes in a drink on a warm day - it keeps the temperature down (freezing at the surface). When the Arctic Ice finally goes in summer, there will be little to keep the surface temperature low (especially when the ices goes the next years after that in the summer). The base temperature around Greenland will then radically jump by probably 10ºC and then we will get 10x the ice melt from the Greenland glaciers. The permafrost will also radically thaw releasing Gtons of methane. If we reach that point, there will be absolutely nothing that we could do to stop the positive feedback mechansim.

We are in an iceage. This is the interglacial part of that iceage.

to be clear....the planet has done this without humans....but you know this. We need to look at human acceleration impacts if you can get political money out of your science

A thinly veiled accusation of the man? What? Go and look at the graph again. The warming starts about the time of the industrial revolution which was a human acceleration impact. Grow up.

preventing the next ice age??? homie.... do you not understand how salinity affects the amoc? what the amoc and gulf stream do?
