Sorry to the old guy that pulled across in front of me, I had nowhere to go....

He even did two shoulder checks yet you still smashed into him. The riders here in Portugal go about three times the speed you were doing. Everyone knows that when overtaking someone, it’s YOUR responsibility to ensure a safe pass. Simple as that.

Tried my best, the old guy wobbles across, what was I suppose to do, stop and wave him across. I could see him looking but equally mate the terrain in front of him was all of a 3 inch rut, why move into the line of passing traffic??

He’s trying to shoulder check while also navigating the obstruction, should’ve been a clear warning. Rider behind (and the one who’s got the skills to do so) has got to make a safe pass. It's trail riding, you have to be prepared for other riders to do unexpected manoeuvres to avoid hazards you may not have seen. Mirror signal manoeuvre doesn't apply. And if you think it does, why were you passing on the left?

@@mattbadley1896 Glad to see the mindset changed after the heat cooled down. It's all a learning curve for everyone out there, with the mixture of abilities and experience. If, like me, you've rarely been through a deep rut off road, see that will make you go 50p 5p, unknowing on how the bike gonna react. Only way to learn, is by doing it safely. I've been that old chap, and had someone glance into the side off me. (too close following on gravel/ stony road, with another rider overtaking). Again, I was all marked up in a Hi-vis, with a L tapped on the back, to signal I'm a newbie. We did similar, no damage done, shuck hands and away we went, with him in front.

Agree there, if ya find a herd of, what looking like newbies pootling a long, ease off, observe, and then go. Also, it's all in the spirit of the ABR, of not holding grudges for accidents. This is why it was a 20 down this part of the trial. There was some horrible ruts, that, for us beginners be horrible to navigate. Some of the "experienced" riders riding was shocking for us newbies. Tailgating us, passing close etc. 0:19 for the proof it was a 20mph down that track. Its a leisure ride, not a race. I was clearly marked up as a newbie, and I still had "experienced" riders not ride considerately. I'm putting experienced in quotations, as, proper experienced people, would ride to help the newbie gain their confidence on off-roading. Not pressure them everywhere.

The Bridgestone Trail replicates a one way green lane. All green lanes are roads. The ABR trail is not one, but is treated as one for the purposes of providing a trail riding experience for ABRs, particularly for those who have little or no experience of riding off tarmac. On a road a motorcyclist is perfectly entitled to ride anywhere he/she sees fit on the carriageway. Undertaking is illegal on a road except when filtering past stationary traffic. The guy who was hit would be required by the highway code not to ride erratically, obstruct overtakes, etc - but this isn't actually a road and he's inexperienced and such people do make mistakes! All road users, plus other people in any other situation, including this one, have a legal duty to exercise duty of care not to injure or cause distress to others, particularly in situations when there is a high likelihood that inexperienced people may behave erratically. In this situation that is to be expected by any experienced rider, same as if you were riding past school gates. If you want to overtake slow down, make sure the slow rider knows you are there and only overtake on a straight section where you can see that he has a smooth surface that he won't need to deviate from. Expect the unexpected and you won't have to face the Spanish Inquisition. It's like skiing, driving, or even racing, the onus is on the person overtaking to do it safely. If that's not enough fun then you're really in the wrong place and should be on the TRF trail or even at an Enduro practice day! They only cost £30, you don't need a licence and you can go fast as you like and overtake anyone you can catch! But even there, you're still expected to overtake safely and you might still come across a novice who does something bizarre!
