Above Angers, France

Thanks to its strategic location, the site has been occupied since Neolithic times!
The Counts of Anjou settled down here as early as the 9th century, followed by the powerful Plantagenêt dynasty three centuries later, when the first palace emerged.
By the 13th century, Blanche de Castille, then regent of France, commissioned the fortress we can visit today: 17 towers made of limestone and shale, a dry moat, and high walls to deter any invaders.
By the 14th and 15th century, the Dukes of Anjou occupied and enhanced the site. Patrons of the arts, they led a grand lifestyle within the walls.
Later, the château became a prison... and the story goes on.
Today, visitors are awed by the sheer size of the fortress, and impressed by the treasure it still holds: "The Tapestry of the Apocalypse," dating back to the 14th century.
Follow Véro on a damp day as she walks a section of the fortress walls, taking in the sights around Angers.

Bonjour Véro! Merci de cette vidéo! My very first visit to France was with my dear host family Angevine. It was fun to ride our bikes to this château. I also love the quaint, narrow streets of the adjacent neigborhood. Amitiés du Michigan

Thank you for the marvelous tour! When I told my university department head some years ago that I was going to see the tapestry, he said, 'Brace yourself!' And he was so right. I've been back several times and I look forward to my next chance to visit Angers for a longer stay.

The city is definitely worth a longer stay. When you return and see the Apocalypse again, don't miss a modern-day version at the Jean Lurçat museum, across the river. The location alone, in a former medieval hospital, is well worth seeing.

Bonjour from Minnesota! Merci for this video! I have been to Angers and remember well the magnificent chateau with it's amazing tapestries. And the cathedral St. Maurice as well. Unfortunately, I only stayed one night. It's too bad I had not your advice to spend a few days, or perhaps a weekend. As a big fan of the Plantagenet dynasty, I am fascinated by it's origins in France. Merci (again) for sharing your country. Winters are rather extreme in Minnesota, so even a gray and rainy day in Angers looks wonderful! A bientot!

Many people who comment about Angers seem to be saying the same thing. France is such a diverse, rich country to explore! There are many hidden treasures and so many towns and cities worth visiting. I know: I live in one of them! :-)

What a lovely area. The architecture is quite nice. It always amazes me the amount of workmanship that went into creating these structures that remain even even after so many centuries. This would definately be a much see. Thank you for a great tour.
