Abdominal Massage For Bloating and Gut Mobility

Here are 2 ways to decrease abdominal bloating and decrease gut pain without medication. Abdominal bloating is something that I have personally struggled with since I was in college. I find that self-massage and myosfascial release to the abdominal region increases motility in my gut as well as improves overall comfort and flatness. Abdominal massage for bloating is a really helpful technique to complete on yourself to improve comfort and decrease bloating.

    *As one viewer mentioned, abdominal bloating can be a sign of Ovarian Cancer. Please note the signs & symptoms of Ovarian Cancer: -Persistent bloating -Feeling full quickly -Indigestion/heartburn -Changes in bowel -Shortness of breath -Abdominal pain Please Note: Ovarian Cancer is NOT screened for in your pap smear (cervical cancer is) and can happen at ANY AGE (including in your 20s). If you have any/all of these signs and symptoms please bring them up to your doctor and request a pelvic ultrasound and a CA125 blood test. For more information on ovarian cancer: www.cancer.org/cancer/ovarian-cancer/detection-diagnosis-staging/detection.html ,In honor of my friend Brittany Crosby, who was a huge advocate for educating on the disease, as well as the growth of this video, I believe it's my duty to share information on Ovarian Cancer, as bloating CAN be an early sign. It can also be a symptom of other inflammatory diseases, so please, always bring up constant bloating symptoms to your doctor. Hi Leyla, this technique can help release constipation, which can result in pounds lost due to a bowel movement, but not result in the loss of fat cells. It can help you feel lighter if there is constipation and help things get moving, but other great alternatives for weight loss including making sure you're drinking your body weight in lbs in oz of water daily, exercising for 30 minutes 4-5 times a week, and using an eating plan that focuses specifically on your goals of weight loss and your individual body type (I personally do veggies > carbs, good fat, and high nutrient dense food. Good luck! Lauren

    ForgiveAndLove09, Gosh, that is definitely a big change. I would absolutely try this, but also reach out to a healthcare professional that is familiar with your past medical history because sudden onset as well as considerable inflammation that you mentioned might be something more significant (& it's always better to go on the side of caution). Your GI tract does house a lot of the receptors for serotonin so it wouldn't be a stretch for there to be a correlation there with mood changes. I absolutely love that you're making big changes, but really would encourage sharing your concerns with a medical professional, (as soon as you can, but especially if it continues). Good luck, Lauren

I will see myDoc for yearly labs in a month so if my symptoms keep improving I will just wait till then otherwise will see her sooner. I dont have any tenderness thru the massage. My mood has lifted, energy is trying to rise but still low. I have just a bit of short nausea after the massage but it goes away. I ate my hamburger meat and bone broths today again. It will be some time before trying any plant fiber again to give this time to heal and rebalance. Fasting makes me feel the best so gonna keep with that. I cant express my gratitude enough to online Docs that give tips to try and help. I rely on them and others testimonies of success. Thank you Doc🙏🏼

Because she has suffered with these things for many years so these were not red flags to her or the doctors that blamed IBS, diverticulitis, lazy bowel and all the other things they blamed it on. • @DrLaurenBaker

    @DrLaurenBaker

    3 жыл бұрын

    Neil, Thanks so much for the message! Pushing and plunging the belly can be a tool but please be very careful that you're not straining -- a lot of times straining by pushing can actually cause some unforseen issues with your pelvic floor. When taking a deep breath in and allowing the pelvic floor to relax or essentially drop down toward the floor (increases the space in your abdominal cavity) that will result in a similar effect but be much more of an advantageous experience for your body. Check out box breathing as an option for safely expanding and "plunging" your belly. There are tons of breathing techniques, so if you're trained in doing what you mentioned safely while simultaneously relaxing and contracting your pelvic floor, no worries, I just wanted to make sure you knew that straining by pushing your belly out could have unintended negative consequences on your pelvic floor (& hopefully save you some trouble in the future!). Good luck & thanks again for commenting!

    I hope so too! bloating is uncomfortable in all of us. Hydration is also incredibly important -- the ideal amount is half your body weight in lbs converted to oz, so if someone is 150lbs, the amount of water they need daily is 75 oz. I like to remind since hydration is hard for a lot of us for a lot of reasons.

    @@syazwan1765 it’s possible. It would be hard to say what is causing that feeling without knowing your full medical background (which would be best talked about with your doctor vs sharing here!). The bottom right is more toward the beginning of the large intestine so this massage technique should help move that along especially the upside down U version. Definitely bring up with your doctor though if you continue to experience it.

    If you're having a bowel movement in accordance with the "bloat" increasing/decreasing, you could focus more on increasing water intake to help have a bowel movement daily, which might decrease your experience of bloating. Just another thought -- but glad you're happy with your current state! Hi Sig Glass, there are lots of styles of abdominal massage and this is simply one option. I would encourage finding other examples on KZread (especially if they’re done by a physical therapist). I’m not sure that massaging for a couple hours would be an effective strategy unless one was following a very specific protocol (there are none that I am aware of). I usually encourage self massage for 5-30 minutes but usually focusing on only 5-20 min on a specific area. I hope this is helpful, Lauren

    Hi Sig Glass, you are very inquisitive which is great. I personally would not out of fear of irritating the abdominal region by being too aggressive and feel the risk vs reward to be too high compared to completing a 20-30 min session. However, as humans we are free to experiment however we want with our bodies - that being said, I would advise against it.

  • @DrLaurenBaker

    @DrLaurenBaker

    Without lubricant can be beneficial for specific types of massage that I do not talk about in this video - one being skin rolling. I will have some skin rolling videos in the future. Lubrication has great benefits for the skin. It will not alone get rid of fat cells (again encourage individuals to use nutrition princIpals and exercise of 150 min per week of moderate exercise, 90% of weeks to lose weight or to speak with a dietician, doctor, or even a nutritionist/personal trainer for individualized advice). What you may find is that the underlying tissue does look smoother with consistent massage and that your general comfort of your abdomen is better with more regular bowel movements. So you might generally feel better but again massage does not delete fat cells from the body to specifically answer your question. Keep researching though as you seem to be really interested in losing weight, Lauren

    Hi what is bias, unfortunately your best option is to ask your physician in person about any bloating concerns especially if you have issues with menstration. Another option would be to bring it up during your yearly exam or to go to a pelvic floor physical therapist who may be able to help. Diagnoses such as endometriosis or other things that make that time of the month difficult can be alleviated or at least managed. You can also check out my own personal pelvic floor PT, Amanda and her content at www.makeandmanifest.com she has tons on all kinds of amazing things even making that time of the month easier! Hi Sig Glass, I am not aware of this specific strategy as being effective especially since Ice should only be placed on an area for 20 minutes or less to avoid frost bite or skin irritation. Exercise for 30 minutes 3-5 times a week along with healthy nutrition (vegetables most with protein and carbs and healthy fats) are the most effective and what I would recommend. If you have specific questions on nutrition: your physician, physical therapist or registered dietician are the experts I would reach out to for additional support. Good luck, Lauren

The abdominal cavity definitely is interactive with your diaphragm so that could’ve been the correlation there with breathing - get things moving and there’s more room for the diaphragm to come down into the cavity and more room for your lungs to expand :) good luck with continuing - I will say though if you do still continue to have any breathing concerns please bring them up with your physician 💕

    Hi Namrata, Thank you so much for your comment. It does seem like a lot is going right now for you and I'm sorry to hear you're going through a tough season. I'm really proud of you for seeking medical advice from your Physician as that is absolutely the first thing I would've recommended. I'm not sure how much I can help since even though you provided me with a ton of information, it does seem like you have a lot going on right now. I would monitor weight loss as that can be a sign of more significant diseases so if you continue to lose weight, please advocate for additional testing from your Doctor. If that combines with pain at night, then I would make sure that you are up to date on all your cancer screenings. The gym itself and exercise in general usually helps most of the conditions you described above so I'm not sure there -- if the gym doesn't feel right to you I would still try to find a gentle form of movement to stay active such as yoga, walking, or biking. Sending you lots of love and keep advocating for yourself. I hope some of this was helpful. Lauren

    Hi! Yes after talking with a pelvic floor physical therapist to confirm, she said that gentle abdominal massage is safe but to always confirm specifically with your doctor in case there would be a reason not to. She did say though that depending on how far along you may not be able to effect much change since baby may block your intestines you are trying to influence. That being said there may be some relaxation that can occur. You may want to follow up with a pre natal massage therapist or pelvic floor physical therapist if you are having issues in this area though consistently!

    Hi Lexie, I would absolutely recommend contacting your doctor as well as showing them the technique you utilized (this video). While it could be something as simple as your hip flexor being in spasm, it could also be something medical professionals call "rebound pain," which could mean there's inflammation in the area, which would be something not considered common and good to rule out by visiting a Physician. Good Luck & Let me know how it goes (fingers crossed for good news, but truthfully better to go to a doctor to make sure everything is ok!) Lauren

    Hi Sanskriti, sometimes due to inflammation in the region it is possible to be more constipated during a woman’s cycle (period) and this technique could help with that. One recommendation would be to be gentle and go slow based on one’s tolerance as during periods that region of the body can be painful. Unless directly recommended to avoid by a doctor for a specific region, abdominal massage will likely help but always go to one’s own tolerance and discontinue if it becomes uncomfortable for any reason. Hopefully this helps! Dr Lauren

  • @DrLaurenBaker

    Hi Tom! Thanks for the comment. Generally speaking bloating can be caused by a multitude of reasons and can also be used to describe the “overly full feeling” where there is just undigested food still in the gut waiting to be fully processed or in the process of being turned into waste/absorbed. In those cases, bloating is totally normal. In the cases where bloating is due to inflammation or is constant and uncomfortable or results in abdominal pain those are the instances when food allergies, gut inflammation, cancer screenings, or other diseases should be ruled out. I always encourage people to be proactive with their health and bring up weird things or “off things,” with their doctors so they have the opportunity to document and also to educate on your specific issues. Knowledge and communication are SO helpful and I don’t think as a society we bring enough up with our medical providers (they could also spend more time with their patients so it’s definitely a two way street!). Good luck!

    Hi Tom! Unfortunately a lot of traditional massage therapists avoid the abdominal region. I personally have not tried to find one myself but have been curious about visceral manipulation - an individual certified in visceral manipulation would be much more of an expert on the abdominal region than a traditional massage therapist. Pelvic floor physical therapists are also additionally trained in the viscera (organs) and abdominal region and might have additional training that would be of help (I learned this technique from a pelvic floor PT!).

    Hi Lola! Thanks for the comment. It is possible that there are reasons to go in alternate directions. This technique is not meant for blockage release, only for improving normal motility and bloating. If you have been taught something different in the event of a blockage, I would continue with that technique. The direction you are explaining would make sense in the event of a blockage, because you would be encouraging movement away from the descending colon back toward the way it came.

  • @DrLaurenBaker

    @DrLaurenBaker

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Huan, I'm not 100% sure I understood what you're asking but here goes my best attempt. I'm thinking that you're saying that a doctor mentioned to you that you should view your abdomen as a clock in regards to different sections of your abdomen and maybe trying to explain how food moves through your intestines. If you think of your belly button at 12 o'clock, and your pubic region as 6 oclock then food is going to move from about 8-9 oclock to 12 oclock to 3 oclock to 4-5 oclock. Food moves from the bottom right hand side, up toward your belly button, and then down toward the bottom left hand side right above your hip bone and then out through your anus (behind) region. You can massage in a clockwise pattern, but you want to start at the 8-9 o'clock region or bottom right hand region near your "hip bones," or iliacus bone to be most effective. I know this is a lot of information but hopefully it answers what you were asking! Lauren

Will have to check if that’s why I chose to use a slightly less accurate term or if it was an accident, honestly can’t remember. I do a bunch of keyword research before I create a title in hopes that the people who need the video are able to find it.
