Thanks for that. I've shared it on my blog (which focuses on strengths-based approaches to working with communities and families). What I particularly like about it is the emphasis on how it discusses the idea that the health of our minds and hearts affect our material well-being.

The lesson of this video for me is that nothing can happen until the community or individuals take ownership of a project from the outset. Here, an original project that is funded but failed is prescribed from outside. The community did not generate the project from its own members. It happens in mental health. Funding is obtained for mental health groups to make a film for example, but the theme is prescribed to fit in with the funding criteria and not generated from the group itself. That isn't creative. A strictly 'needs-based' approach rarely works.

It's a great video to show the value of ABCD model and how it can affect communities & citizens. Thank you for making and sharing it!

Dear Nosipho, thank you for your comment. If I understand you correctly, some of the things that could go wrong with only relying on outside help in community development is creating dependency and power struggles. Using an asset based approach to community development encourages community members to take stock of what they have - individual skills and talents, social cohesion (building trusting relationships), natural, physical and financial - coming up with ideas and plans together as a group (standing strong together), then using that as leverage to get outside help for what is still needed. Every situation is context specific though and I don't think this is a 'one size fits all' situation at all....We just know of many communities who have been 'bullied' by funders to start projects that are not relevant and what the community actually wants, but they say 'yes' to it because it brings money - then power struggles come into play... With ABCD we are saying it is time we take responsibility for our own lives and stop waiting for outside help - rather start with what we have and build with what we know.
