ABC Wide World of Sports - Ali Frazier Studio Brawl
January 26, 1974
ABC Wide World of Sports
As a build-up for their rematch, Howard Cosell sits down with Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier to review their first fight from 1971. Tension builds and eventually erupts.
The day after the studio brawl the New York State Athletic Commission fined both Ali and Frazier $5,000 a piece.
Two day later Ali would avenge his first career loss as he won the rematch with a 12-round unanimous decision over Frazier.

Ali understood the art of marketing. Frazier didn't and took things personally
Ali - 'MONDAY NIGHT, BOY!'

Love how Ali is so bold and honest with both of them. No fighter today is as authentic as Ali.
The way Howard Cossell goes into commentary mode when the brawl occurs always has me laughing.
I was 10 when they had this fight and was training to be a boxer I ended up boxing in the pros and because of that, I was able to interact with both of these great fighters many years later. They were both inspirational to me and millions of others across the world.

Most people don't realize this, but this was the very first live "Real-TV" event in television history. I was thirteen years old and I watched this with my two older brothers and my father. When Joe stood up over Ali and they began to tussle while the cameras rolled, we were in absolute SHOCK. We had NEVER seen anything like this. Ali and Frazier are the pioneers of "Real-TV". 😃
Joe...."he can't carry his hands high, he just can't do it"
Howard cosell the great announcer, keeps giving the play by play while there fighting in the studio.
“I went to the hospital for ten minutes, you were there for a month now be quite” - Ali the savage
Ali/Frazier - Two men that deeply needed each other. Two men that gave their blood and sacrificed their bodies for the sport they loved so much (and were extraordinarily good at). I don’t think we’ll ever see a rivalry as deeply personal and intense as theirs. God speed Smokin Joe, God speed Ali!
The introduction music of ABC's Wide World Sports is so nostalgic. The world has really changed from those days.
Joe was amazing in all 3 of the fights.. I always thought joe was a classy guy.. very likeable
Ali was playing. Joe wasn't.
Reporter: "who was the greatest fighter you ever fought?"
The BIGGEST mistake was not having Cosell sitting in between them knowing full well the highly charge feelings between the two fighters !!
To say this is classic is an understatement, and the commercials included to boot!thank you very much 4 unloading
These two men represented the greatest rivalry in the history of professional sports. RIP champs. ❤️❤️
I saw this live on T.v I was 6yrs old an all Ali vs Frazier fights I love watching Wide World of Sports every Saturday afternoon what a great privilege it was to watch with my uncle Jimmy.
