I’m just going to share a little tip that I learn and use when I am cutting something like a jacket that will require me to finish edges from a blanket or curtain that already had finished edges is I use the already finished edges to save myself some time and sewing. I made a cool pirate jacket from a curtain once, the front edge down the long skirt part of the jacket and the bottom hem have the original hem from when the curtain was factory made. Saved me loads of time! It was a solid color with no pattern so that was what made doing this an easy choice. Sometimes patterned fabric doesn’t give you that option but I still wanted to share. The jacket looks amazing and I love how the pattern matched up in the front even if it was a happy accident! So glad that stunning quilt is getting a second life!

the jacket is beautiful! it is probably technically not a vintage quilt because it is all one piece and printed as one piece of fabric. a vintage quilt would be pieced. but there is no question it is beautiful! the fact that you matched your print so well in the front shows you did an excellent job! better than a neophyte seamstress:)

The fact that you noticed a potential problem before cutting anything out was an excellent example for all sewers to follow. You were right to check with grandma. Typically if there’s a one way nap or pattern repeat, all pieces need to be cut out in the same direction. Extra thought also needs to be given for collars as they roll and can easily end up upside down. This quilt is a beautiful choice for this project. You were genius to have done a practice coat out of a less precious fabric. I like that we’re learning from your mistakes and that you are so open, relatable, and matter of fact when talking through the process. The pattern matching is something that more advanced sewers don’t always do as well with. Very well done indeed!!!!!

It was fun to watch this video, the coat is wonderful. A small thing you might want to do next time is point. your pins toward the center of your pieces rather than towards the edge. If you do that you will be able to remove them with your right hand and get the pins to your pin cushion much easier, I learned to do this when I first started quilting and it was so much easier to sew and deal with pins.
@iamsharon33062 жыл бұрын
You can put some fray check on those seams to prevent them from fraying. You can buy it at any fabric store, JoAnns or on Amazon. Its made by Dritz. Other brands make it,, too! OR next time, use the hong kong or princess seam method. GREAT JOB! The coat looks fabulous.

Absolutely gorgeous. I have been thinking about making one and I think I'm gonna have to after seeing how beautiful yours turned out. I just have a hard time cutting up the quilts. I'm gonna have to find one that I don't fall in love with but you did a excellent job. Just a little trick, try and layout your pattern wear your sleeves and front and back are pinned around the edge of the quilt where you won't have to hem them. They already have the finish from the quilt. Hopefully I explained that correctly. Your sleeves and front and back will not have to be sewed. Finished edges from the quilt but Absolutely gorgeous
