Charpy impact test has been simulated using Johnson-cook plastic material model with damage. This video takes you through critical steps such as defining Johnson cook material model, geometry build up, element and hour glass control option, contact definition, loads and BC. This demonstrative example accounts for triaxial state of stress, strain rate, temp effect is not cosidered. This demonstrative Charpy test method described in this video would help abaqus Engineers to customize as per their requirement based on material, mass drop height, crack propagation etc

For those who say the crack didn't form, try increasing the velocity along with the decrease in mesh size of the sample. To make the model run faster, increase the mesh size of the anvil or better model it as discrete rigid
Hi, thanks for the video. Just a question, regarding the damage evolution, why did you assign a value of 1 for the fracture energy? I believe this must be the area under stress strain curve, multiplied by the characteristic length/thickness?

Thanks for the tutorial! Always very hepful. Just one thing, I believe you set your density wrong. I verify my anvil mass and it was 4.8 kg as the volume is 4797.07mm3, as such the density in order to get 1.5 kg is 3.127E-7. Or am I missing something? Cheers, keep up the good work!

The anvil geometry is approximately modeled in this demonstrative tutorial, it is @ 2.3 kg. In your case you may be correct too. As it is mentioned density can be manipulated to get the accurate mass without changing physics of the problem.

i got the same error, tell now i could not solve this problem and the animation not appear like this tutorial , i think ther is some thing wrong in parameters
Thank you Abaqus Acumen for your wonderful videos. I watch all of them without fail. I am currently working on a bullet impact problem. The job is running succesfully but a clear hole is not formed. The elements in the impact zone are being dragged and even after I did Result > Field Output > PEEQ > Remove elements - I entered many values here. But still, the distortion persists. Can you help me out? Thanks.

In my case the crack propagated but the anvil is not propagating, if anyone has found the solution please revert back
Dear Sir; I know this video was uploaded more than a year ago, but I just recently saw it and tried to mimic it but I am having some problems with the analysis, when I run it my crack is not propagating and the anvil stays in its position for some reason. Crack is not propagating instead, the anvil is penetrating the sample.
