I remember shooting here in 1973/4 whilst stationed at Old Park Barracks in Whitfield. These ranges are called Gallery Ranges and usually had 12 target frames that consisted of a double target frame, one behind the other that went up and down, with a double figure 11 target in each frame; each target had big white target numbers behind it that were positioned on the top of the bullet trap (earth/sand mound). The target area was called the "Butts". When the firers were ready, the range officer would call the butts on a field telephone and order "targets up" and the NCO in charge of the butts would shout out "targets up" and one of the two target frames would be raised and firing commenced. Once the specific amount of rounds were fired, the Range Officer would call the butts and order "targets down" . I think you get the picture? The light railway was in fact for a rail cart that was used to carry the targets from a building behind the firing position where they were repaired and stored by the Range Warden. This building was also a troop shelter which still exists today and is being restored as far as I know?

I think you are right about the railway line. Could be a narrow gage line.
