Exploring WW2 Hougham Gun Battery, Dover.

#WW2 #Dover #MilitaryHistory
Join us this week as we take a look at another one of Dovers WW2 gun batteries..
Hougham Battery is one of a number of coastal batteries established during WW2 along the Kent Coast. It was built in 1941 and manned by men of 520 Coastal Regiment Royal Artillery although by 1942 most of the younger men had been transferred to field regiments and most of those left manning the guns were elderly, including many veterans of the previous war. The battery was located on the north side of the old Folkstone - Dover Road and it was equipped with three 8" Mk. VIII naval guns.
The battery was largely covered over with spoil during the abortive construction of the Channel Tunnel in the 1970’s and very little is visible today apart from the top section of an underground magazine.
The combined fortress and battery plotting room was located to the south of the gun emplacements and this has survived in a field on the south side of the A20, 20 yards south of a farm access track that runs parallel with the road at this point. Other buildings survive on the cliff top including the Fire Command Post, Fortress Observation Post and Battery Observation Post. The overall coastal command for Dover was from an operations room in one of the casemates below Dover Castle, alongside the anti aircraft operations room. This worked in conjunction with the Command Fire Post which was co-located with the Port War Signals Station on the cliff top above the casemates. The coastal batteries at Dover were manned by three regiments of at least 3 batteries.

The Anti Aircraft Batteries along the SE Kent coast from Deal to Folkestone were British Army Artillery batteries, USA Army Artillery and RAF Regiment Anti Aircraft Artillery batteries, Home Guard did not actually man these along the Kent coast as They were too critical. Well done and Thank you for your efforts. (I'm a Dover Shark by birth)

The new A20 was built in the 90'snot the 70's. Those windows above the doors are known as borrowed lights used to allow light into corridors.

Thanks Gazza.. The information we found was quite contradictory, some say it was covered over in the 70s but we've since found out the site where the guns and camp was went on to be quite extensively used by the workers constructing the channel tunnel so I expect it was around then that alot of the military remains were destroyed, and your right, at the time the road still went straight up north instead of heading along the new alignment to the west. Thanks for the additional information and for watching 👍🙂

The deep shelter is only yards from where you were standing, right by the magazine at the start of the video, easily accessible and worth a visit, the plotting room is open ( it was last time I visited up there) you need 2 people to open the hatch, best attempted on a dry day,as the mud sucks at the metal and makes it nigh on impossible to open. The observation post with the Acro’s holding the roof up is getting worse, before the roof slab snapped, you could feel the whole thing move when you jumped on it,not recommended.

Yes, like a few of the batteries around here it has a deep level shelter nearby, we'll have our explore of that uploaded next weekend.. The plotting rooms would have been great to take a look at but maybe we'll save that for the drier weather. Shame the site had been left to deteriorated so much before they decided to start trying to save it.. it could be a great place for people to visit with a few information board about, a real asset to the area. Thanks for watching and commenting 😊👍

I'm pretty sure most of these structures would have been in use in the post war national service era. That could explain some of the ad hoc heating area's as in the post war fireplace in the video. In my early 30's I worked with a couple of older guys that did national service very likely posted to these type structures. In the words of one of them who was 30 years older than me at that time. He said they they did the basics on old WWII equipment because the MOD didn't want them getting any glimpse of new technology for obvious reasons. He told me they had would have to shoot shells at a wind sock towed by a light aircraft and one day the pilot dropped the sock and said " fuck this game they nearly shot me down " the pilot refused to go back up. My father did national service soon after WWII ended and he saw it a waste of time with low pay when he could have been earning a lot more in civi street to support his mother.

There's a hood possibility they were I guess.. let's hope if they bring back National Service they don't have similar practices to back then! Thanks for your comment and information, very interesting 🙂👍

There surely will have been search lights there too as you'd not be able to observe much otherwise in the dark?

  • @ExploringWithEmAndStu

It's unusual for batteries not to have had search lights but strangely we didn't see any obvious signs of any there that day nor on any of the old map diagrams we've seen so I'm not too sure to be honest.. Maybe it's something we'll have to do some research about.. 🤔

Isn't it a shame that these historic building that plaid a major part in defending our nation are just left to fall into ruins.
