Finding an ABANDONED HELICOPTER, ABANDONED BOMBS and ABANDONED TANKS doesn't happen everyday on a usual explore. This was an incredible/enjoyable explore as-well as a very dangerous one as part of this RAF Base is still active/in-use which is why I took the opportunity to blur our faces out in this video. Anyway I hope you enjoy this Abandoned Army Base video, if you'd like to see more make sure you drop a LIKE on this video :)

0:33 - Saxon APC - Built for the Cold War, used extensively in Northern Ireland and Iraq. 1:41 - Westland Whirlwind - British licenced and built version of the American Sikorsky Chickasaw. Given the yellow paint scheme, search and rescue variant in service with the RAF. Replaced by the Westland Wessex and later the Westland Seaking...also British licenced and built versions of American aircraft. 3:00 - Probably a decompression chamber 5:07 - Blank shell casing, not a live round. 5:15 - FV432 APC - still alot of them around where you can go and drive them for the day :-D ....also, as already mentioned in the comments, from the layout and the activity, you're probably on a live miltary training area!!

I am pretty sure that helicopter is a Lynx and not a Chikasaw, the cockpit and nose do not look as large and high up as a Chikasaw, but it does resemble the nose and cokcpit of a Lynx, almost exaclty.

@@henrymartini298 The H-34/S-58 Choctaw (1954) has not the four wheeel landing gear as you would find on the H-19/S-55 Chickasaw(1949) so, if you look closely, you can see at the end of the fuselage before the tail boom, the hardpoints for the landing gear which would make it more probably an S-55 rather than an S-58; last but not least, the Brits never used/produced the S-58 but used the S-55 built by Westland Aircraft....but I might be wrong.

You guys were on a Military bombing range, not a good place to be hanging around ESPECIALLY when you start hearing jet noise. The bombs were rendered inert. Yellow ring means it used to contain high explosive, but inert means the fuzes were drilled out. The anti-aircraft gun is a 14.5mm ZPU-4. The missile is likely an SA-3 Goa. The bomb with the parachute resembles a Snake Eye bomb but it is something I cant identify. The balute and fin combo in the back is a retarder to slow the bomb down immediately after release so you can drop low altitude and create enough separation from the aircraft to not frag yourself. The altitude chambers you found are sealed and the air pressure is lowered to allow pilots to experience hypoxia symptoms in a controlled environment. Many aviators have been killed due to the disorienting or oftentimes incapacitating effects of hypoxia at high altitude. Guys, I know the allure of military vehicles and structures is exciting but going out to what is almost certainly still an active bombing range is very irresponsible. If a plane comes by and drops a weapon on you there are some very serious consequences, the biggest and most immediate being your deaths. Not to mention that pilot has to live with the guilt of killing a couple of kids for the rest of his life. Keep exploring but stay away from Military facilities.

it is a firing range of some sort. the yellow paint and old retired shot up equipment is a dead give away. strange they didn't retrieve some of those non exploded ordinances though. here in the states they make us search every blade of grass till 100% of the brass is picked up lol.

That missile is never a SA-3 Goa, you see the nozzle at the side. Its most certainly an Air to Ground missile, probably something from the KH-23 family

Just a side note. If I was exploring, found an area with abandoned vehicles and airships with clear signs of projectile impacts, I would think to myself, "Self, you may be standing on an active ATG (Air to Ground) range." With that, I would double time the hell out of there. LOL Loved the video.

this looks like RAF Upper Heyford. The trucks with the chamber doors were where you used to get qualified for NBC suit up using tear gas. The bombs all clearly say inert and are for loading and unloading practice. The APC, soviet AAA piece, radar van etc were used so ground attack aircraft crews could learn to identify friendly and foe ordinance in fast ground attack passes. Wouldn't mind that AAA piece in my back yard as a restoration project.

DemonicPigeon - I only know that the NBC chambers were there in the early '80s when I left. The base is now long closed and used to store unsold new cars. It was used in a BBC crime show for a chase scene and the interior of a building as a crime scene in the last few yrs. The base that was explored could be anyone of a number of places that allow long straight fast inbound passes

If anybody is wondering about the chopper. That helicopter is what the US Military used in the Korean War. It was the first widely used chopper in combat. It is a Sikorsky H-19 Chickasaw/Westland Whirlwind S-55. The one you see here is obviously the British licensed built version. I am a big fan of that helicopter. I made a Battlefield 2 total conversion Korean War mod called Battlefield: Korea and we have this chopper in it. www.moddb.com/mods/battlefield-korea You can see a picture of the one we use in the game here. www.moddb.com/mods/battlefield-korea/images/sikorsky-h-19-chickasaw4#imagebox

Common practice to take captured weapons from hostile countries back to your bases and strip them down then test them to see what the capabilities are. Most likely was stripped of all explosives then test fired to see it in action up close.

Not a tank, but an armored personnel carrier. Finding the ordnance was awesome. The bomb with the parachute is actually a Ballute, it deploys in the air and fills up like a balloon, slowing the weapon. That type of apparatus is referred to as Retarded Fall.

A really good idea when dealing with any ordinance is to NOT step on it, or kick it, or pick it up. The things you saw were probably not actually live ordinance since it is unlikely for it to just be sitting in a field where anyone could walk up to it. Still, stranger thing have happened. Depends on if they were dropped and did not go off, or if they were put in place just for verisimilitude.

Very cool, and I geek out on this stuff as well, but not everything with treads is a tank. That's just an APC that they probably used as a target, and in its actual life was more than likely used as a mobile ops center. Also, all those "bombs" are empty steel shells, nothing particularly exciting.

Scrap helicopter was a Whirlwind and being in yellow was originally Air Sea Rescue. !st veh was a Saxon. Tank was actually 432 armoured personnel carrier although this version looked like a command post. Many of the bombs were inert as written on but some still had detonator cone and not written as inert so I would not be playing around them. Radar vans appear to be old RAF type.
