@@jasoneldridge4738 I watched about ten minutes of Fifth Gear once and was bored to tears... It's just another new car review show. Clarkson's Top Gear is Monty Python with cars. I couldn't care less about the new car market. Top Gear is absolute genius.

Just astounding what cars are lurking for decades, in anonymous or hidden garages... This Cortina has had a life as a family car. Makes you think about their excitement buying it, their days out, the memories...

They were all prolly sitting inside the car, saying, you're not taking this car anywhere! 🏃🏽‍♂

The brushes on the starter are probably stuck and corroded. A neighbour had one of these new and would give me a lift to school on his way to work. It was kept outside and on winter mornings there'd be him, his missus, 10 year-old me and his daughter all sitting in it with the engine running and the windows shut while he took huge draws on a Player's No.6 and blew the smoke on the windscreen to clear it. This took a good 5 minutes. I'm amazed we survived those days.

MY FIRST CAR! Mine was a two door, baby blue 1.5 litre version! I loved it! 1988/89!

I originate from near Romford ..Elm Park actually. My late Father and i collected our Mk 1 Cortina new from Silclock & Collins in 1965 .I was 13 at the time..Still have the Cortina ,hopefully will be competing in Motorsport soon with it after being off the road since April 1996.

You are literally uncovering what I have been imagining In these garages my whole life

Lovely old girl, I had 20 plus filing cabinet keys. 1960’s could open and start nearly all British cars up into the early 70’s

my first car was a Cortina; my dad bought all that he could find for parts. Totalled mine in a rollover, 1987. Thank you for this video.

Hardly anything under the bonnet, unlike modern cars, amazing. Everything looks accessible.

Another cracking episode. Would love a follow-up video on this car if the new owner can get it running again. Thanks again Jonny.

Great video Jonny, I own a 64 "B" plate Mk1 Cortina 4 door in the same colour, mine though is just a deluxe, but it is unrestored and original. Mine eats condensers for breakfast, lets me down all the time, but I love it. Lovely to see a genuine not been played around with Mk1. The air filter on the car is a 1500cc air filter, and the carb is a Zenith identical to my 1500cc, if the engine block has 116e or 120e on the side behind the exhaust, it's a 1500 engine, 113e is a 1200. The blue door you were puzzled by was Ford Corsair, the red door you had at the same time Mk2 Cortina. Hope the old girl makes it back on the road soon🤞

OK you know your stuff, I agree with everything you say above. I was a 2nd year apprentice when the Cortina came out. That was when apprenticeships lasted 6 years.

@@philyew3617 Thanks Phil, my Cortina as I said above is the same car but only a deluxe spec, I've owned it four years now and I love the thing, I was only born in 79, so It's 15 years older than me, I've had lot's of classics over the years, none of them in great condition body wise, but I've always found that servicing them with quality parts keeps them running trouble free, except for my bloody Cortina that decides when it wants to run itself! I'm really just a home tinkerer, mine has let me down so many times now, I travel with a full new ignition set and screwdrivers every time I drive it!

if your car eats condensers, maybe the starter has two cables going to the solenoid? on german fords from the 70's and earlier, the second cable circumvents the ignition's resistor cable while starting to give you a stronger spark. if someone fiddled with that your ignition might be under 12V permanently. and that will fry the condenser, I gather.

WOW My first car was a 1966 ford Cortina 1500 Deluxe, positive ground. I grew up in Newfoundland, Canada. It was a great little car. Had so much fun with it cheers

those doors that you were trying to identify Jonny....the red one was a Mk2 Cortina door and the bluey green one was a Corsair door. I am a bit older than you so I recognise them easily 😉 I well remember the dawn Ford chorus on cold mornings as owners fought to start them to get to work. BL products, with their electric fuel pumps and series A engines, used to spark into life first flick with a dollop of choke. This one brings back memories.

One of those doors with the scallop door handle chrome trim was off a Ford Corsair. My Dad had a 1964 1200cc deluxe Cortina Eatate 'ERE883B' Blue with White Roof and White between the parallel Side Chrome Trims, not sure what you got with the 'Super' but most 'Super' Cortina Estates were 1500cc engined

50 year ago i spent alot of time welding up these cars boot floors and inner wheel arches & strut top plates so this a true survivor.

My brother was the second owner of a 68 mk2 Cortina 4 door here in Australia. It had been a retirement gift to a Ford executive here when he got it. Great car was opitioned with Capri style4 speed with the gear stick futher back. Marc

I enjoyed this garage find of a mk1 Ford Cortina, I remember going one Saturday morning to the dealership to pick up a brand new British Racing Green mk1 cortina FAN 950D. My father was a lover of Ford Cortina having after the mk1 go on to buy a mk2, mk3 and a mk4 After collecting the mk2 he was invited to unveiling of the new Ford Capri, which he took me along with him. Happy days and fond memories

The blue car door that came out with the red escort door was a Corsair door great car design

Wasn't brought back to life the needed to drop drops of penetrene down the spark plug sockets and change the oil and all leads paying attention to the earthing

I cleared out 3 garages bout 20 years ago one was full of motorcycles the other one had a mg a in it and the last one had a beach buggy with several trials bike on top of it the old fella wanted everything gone i kept 25 motorcycles sold the mg to a guy who lived oppasite the garages and sold the beach buggy and vw parts and at the back of the garage under everything was a berkeley 3 wheeler that nobody wanted so it was cut up and skipped sadly along with incompleate motorcycles 😟

Love you too, this is by far the best series on KZread.

@@stephenconway2468 Yeah! And the three - main bearing crank didn't help things. I am sure that you could hear the Crankshaft 'flexing' when the engine was running. Engine sounded to be "laboured" - when stationary. But (today) the Cortina has a large following, and would command a high price in that excellent condition.

They're not old to me, I'd had my licence for a few years when the Cortina was released, then I'm considered old now. That was loaded by the previous decade's standards, a heater and a radio!

I agree. I have a lovely new car. It drives excellently. However, whenever it has a problem it kicks into limp mode and then we are just stuck. I am quite technically aware but really hate it when technology gets in the way. Most times some sensor is not working and the care is fine.

@@Dixilyn As is still common with many manufactures today, not mentioning names but a 3 pointed star is featured. Once ordered a new one and the bottom line of the invoice was way above the base price for the model, didn't go overboard but the Taxi Pack (rubber floor covering, reinforced faux leather/vinyl seats, with leather drivers and uprated suspension, with radio, roof light and meter transponder/wiring with mountings plus fitted first aid kit, fire extinguisher) and a better FM radio/disc player added quite a few grand, that was in the early 90's.

Another great vid, my dad had a mk1 GT back in the late 70s early 80s, (he is now 80 and drives a Focus ST!) I don’t remember it but apparently called it Tina car

Unbelievably, I dug out my old matchbox and corgi juniors for the boys at the weekend, Matchbox Clipper 1973 right there 😂

Great video!! That has to be one of the cleanest original early Mk1 survivor consul cortina, it is in remarkable condition

The first car I bought was a Mk 1 (64 without the "B" prefix) back in 1973. the biggest rust area was around the top of the headlights. You could lock / unlock and start it with a key ring size pen knife.The following year I bought a 73 mk2 with a pre- cross flow engine and in 1978 I got a 1970s Mk 2 1600E.

Was wondering if the clutch was dragging hence the starter. Also the bendix probably rusty and the comutator/brushes gummed up too. Love it, serviced these years ago when I worked as an apprentice at Morris Garage in Mold.

The Cortina is positive earth whereas the other ford is Negative ..Doesn`t effect the cranking speed but certainly the ignition.

Jonny…it probably is running by now but if not, check the starter motor Earth connection on the body of the starter…it can rust and kill the earthing which gives that slow start effect. It was a big problem on the early Victor FD cars 1967/69 and caused a lot of heartache. We redrilled the hole in the starter body and fitted a new connector after which the engine turned over at about three times the speed and the car never failed to start ever again. Useless information maybe unless you unearth a 1968 Victor 2000….RHW 257G in Carnelian Red would be amazing!!!😀😀😀😀

As a child of the 60’s my memory of Fords of that era is that of the Cortina and Anglia, they all seemed to turn over like that then fire into life. The sounds and sight of that Cortina did bring back some memories of my childhood. I also have a lot of memories of being made to push the family Ford to bump start it and my dad always had the Anglia in bits trying to sort out the carbs.

@@mikehunt8823 My dad used to drive right around the street next to ours so he could leave the car facing down the street on a slight incline so it was easier to bump once you started it moving. I can also still start a car with a starting handle having been brought up with dodgy Land Rovers in work. Happy days.

That sluggish turnover brought back some memories, especially the sound effects! I had a 1965 cortina 1200,column change,bench seat!!! That one you showed from the Romford garage was in amazing nick,as you said. I hope someone restores it fully. Well done,keep up the good work!

Great video as usual. You bring us the "real" cars from our collective history. I can remember our neighbour with their light blue Mk1 Cortina proudly showing it to my dad. We had a Fintail Merc 200 or perhaps it was the Ponton 180 B then. They parked right next to us on the street. The memories are with all the dads on the street all looking underneath the bonnets of their cars. We kids skinning our knees as we fell off our bikes, or kicking a football aimlessly....really no aim at all. History for some is a lot of dates around important battles. Social history is often arounds cars and the like. I can still remember the smell of the interiors and the oily engines. Thanks Jonny. Your videos are excellent. This is brilliant work.

That car looks original to me,I bought my first consul cortina in 1975 when i passed my test aged 17, from my dad for £70.00 he bought a mk2 cortina.

My father's 2nd car was an early cortina mk1 2 door deluxe with the three bearing crank. Reg No. BNX 377B he had it from new. We went to Poland in it in 1967 and as a pre journey precaution he had the main bearings changed. My brother eventually took ownership, and decided to park it on its roof😢 I had always hoped it would come down to me but sadly not upon reflection a 2000 mile plus road trip through the iron curtain was quite a challenge even for a three year old car back then . My father and i did a roadside repair on the dynamo, packing out the brush springs. just as an aside the guards at the east German border took great interest in my etch a sketch thinking they'd had discivered something suspicious, until I gave them a demonstration 😅

You should try connecting two batteries in series direct to the starter (disconnect the lead to the starter from the solenoid to isolate the rest of the electric system from 24v) it will spin it quickly then! Worst that will happen is you will need to rebuild the starter but it sounds like thats the case anyway.

Keep the body completely stock, 2.0 zetec and some slightly banded original steels. Job done.

Love seeing these old British cars.

As an American Ford Enthusiast, I can say Pre-electronic chip keys for American Fords have similar characteristics. You can pull them out of the ignition after you start the car and put them in your pocket. Depending on how worn the tumblers are, I've used other Ford vehicle keys by accident, on purpose, and some have gotten to the point of just using a flathead screwdriver. Absolutely Love 'em.

Huge problem in Canada with pre 2008 F250 and F350 pick-ups. They were work truck so no chipped keys. They get stolen so frequently.

A nice coincidence here as the 1963, March to May filming of 'Carry on Cabby' featured the Consull Cortina Super MK1s. They were supplied by the Ford Motor Company as a way of promoting the new model and even some of the posters were sponsored by them using the slogan 'Britain's Newest Film Star - The new Consul Cortina Super - The small car with the big difference'.

Yes, Glam Cabs was run by Hattie Jacques with a young Amanda Barrie as one of her dollybird drivers.

The red door was a mk2 Cortina and the blue one with the handle you liked is from a Corsair👍

Overwhelming nostalgia with this video. My grandad used to take us to clacton in a light blue 2door consul cortina. Must have been an early one as well. I’m thrilled to see a great example that’s survived.

Another great archaeological edition Johnny. Nothing better than doing a 'history search' through an old car. You just never no what you'll find!

My first car was almost identical, a 1963 Goodwood green 4 door, but mine was a Deluxe, not a Super (no chrome strips). The binnacle on the Super is different to the Deluxe. Mine had a long, horizontal strip speedo. Brilliant car. First registered in Brighton, but I had it when living in Essex. Once I mislaid the keys, but it opened and started with a plastic comb! Old Fords were so easy to steal.

Greetings from Scotland! When I started as an apprentice HGV mechanic at a Ford main dealership, this was "THE" car of the day! To get your hands on an original Mk1 Lotus Cortina was everyone's dream, so they had a 1200 Super if they were lucky! Simple and tough old cars!

Who remembers the sound of cars turning over and turning over trying to start? Once a common sound on any street on any morning, especially damp ones. That sound takes me back to the sixties and seventys.

Hillman Avenger was my first car. Wonderful to work on - I’m not a mechanic, but I learnt a lot from pootling about on it.

My first car was a 1500 mk1 cortina there was a reverse gear lock installed as you could start it with a paper clip. I parked it in Drammen Norway when I got back it had been reversed into the ditch behind the car, but at least not stolen!

Brings back childhood memories, cars had so much more character back in the day ❤

What a cracking old survivor, it looks like a heavy duty battery and heavier jump leads would give it a fighting chance of starting 👍

Hi Johnny only just this morning on the m25 at junction 26 Waltham Abbey a chap had broken down in a red mk 2 cortina 1600 E ,it was being towed off the motorway by the highways agency 🇬🇧👍

I remember my dad had a Ford Cortina MK1 when I was a kid. My dad's gone now, but this brought back some nice memories... Thank you 🙏

Interesting to see that it has a Lucas Distributor fitted ,and along with a dynamo it's positive earth,poor spark usually caused by bad connection on the low tension lead to the Distributor where it goes through the plastic block. Apply engine engine earth directly to body of the starter motor and it will spin over a bit quicker.

All MK1 ohv Cortinas have Lucas 25d4 distributors , & the Lotus has Lucas 23d4 ( without the vacuum advance unit), early mk2 Cortina1500 & 1300 had either Lucas or Autolite distributors . Dynamo charging was in all MK1 , MK2( some later 1600E had alternator option - esp if a HRW was fitted) & some lower spec MK3 up to 1973 had the same Lucas unit as the earlier cars ! 1966/ 67 was the approximate change over date to Negative earth on the Kent engined cars .

Great video Jonny - get it running and leave the patina as it is. Will be a fabulous buy for someone into Fords.

It's very original and whoever takes that one on will need to keep it that way as much as possible. nb. always checks the earthing lead from the engine block to the chassis if it's turning over weakly.

Great episode.I simply dig that excited schoolboy enthusiasm you still display.As a late-1960's highschool lad,I serviced one of these having similar issues.Turned out to be a bad engine/gearbox-to-chassis earthstrap. Some years later,my then soon-to-be mother-in-law had a two door version with identical problem.Solving it ,earned me instantaneous pluspoints. BTW, I vaguely recall those early models had Consul bonnet badges.

Seeing that lovely Mk 1 brought back happy childhood memories as mum had a 1600 new in1965 and the non starting sound was pretty much every winter morning. I'd love to own that car but too Audi's, keep up the barn finds

Starter motor worn/weak 🤔🤔

Time warp. Dad had a 63 (5433DP) in Dove grey, 1200 deluxe with the oblong speedo. Passed my test in September 1976 in it. Memories👍

Those two doors I would have said one was a Mk2 Cortina, the other was a Corsair door.

Owned a 67 Cortina super with the 1500cc.(not the later 1600cc)...constant problems with noisy tappets and very exiting when the gear lever came off in my hand when it broke down at floor level. The car did look good in red with the chrome strips !! ...and handled much better when crossply tyres were swapped for radials....Happy days !!

Soth Carolinian Here. I really enjoy your channel.. British built Ford Cortina's (62-71) were some of the best cars Ford ever built. Ols school British racing was to me, way more interesting than old American racing.

Judging by the knickers someone was probably conceived in the car. From a creation to probably deceased all in one little car.

Bought one of these in 1973 for £100, used it to go to Cornwall on a honeymoon, it never let me down, I loved it. 79 now.

I just love the excitement of finding lost treasure.

Aw, I feel bad for the (now defaulted) owner, assuming they've not shuffled off this mortal coil. But at least the Cortina's been recognised for what it is and not been hauled out for scrap.

Customers of mine kept mk1 minis and other early 60’s cars in London in rented garages. when they moved up north they went to go back to the lockup’s to get the cars and someone had been and moved two of them never to be seen again. Council claimed they knew nothing about it.. watching this I’m not sure how I feel about going through some poor person garage now.

Loving the series, but I don’t think there’s ever a happy background with proper barn finds like this.

@@davecrook4233 Yeah I think I agree, not sure I feel like this was the best idea for a barn find vid. Usually it's a positive story but this is like, here's someone's stuff that we're going through without the consent of them or their family.

Ah man, I’d have thought if anyone could have got it running, it would have been the guy with the beard, glasses and the keys clipped to his belt loop. He looks like the sort of chap that could get anything going with a set of mole grips, some ring spanner’s and a tin of WD40! 😆

Considering where it's been kept, this is in amazing condition

Isn't it? Some cars just want to survive. Or so J believes...

Using a key is a bit fancy. My dad had a late 60's Ford Corsair. I could get into it and start it with a wooden lolly stick.

I found a mk3 cortina about five years ago in a garage I rented, the housing association I rented it off Gabe me the keys and didn't have a clue it was in there. Applied for the log book and got it, tax disk was last in the road 1990 it was still absolutely fine.
