My likely will be a great tornado shelter. You need a system to keep the back of the door from being lifted off and a drip edge to keep rain from getting in, which could cause mold inside and cause health issues.

You are so lucky to have this on the property already and it’s spacious.Now gotta think of work on solar powered backup Led lighting and storage

Well here are some tips. Good work on repairing the door. Next would be to clear everything out and recommend selling what you don't plan to personally reuse. As for the uses cases for the space given that it is temp controlled and massive WITH a restroom there. Why not turn it into a privet movie theater with part of it set aside for her root celler? That way you would have something that you and guests could use during blistering hot days AND would keep her happy by giving her space for some cool storage. As for the utilities I would recommend renting excavator and start by pushing the top gravel to the side to clear it. (Using stakes to stake out what is where.) then dig up the areas that matter. Like where the water comes in as well as that other vent near the back that had a hard turn. Doing this in some key places would let you inspect and fix things IF they need to be or to reattach things that might have been separated from the main line like water. Also look into having the tanks inspected for reuse or removal/replacement. You have something there that many would DREAM of. ALSO one other thing to look into might be a heat pump install down there if you do dig it up.

That's pretty much the plan, I've been working on it and filming, I hope to get a video out very soon. I will figure out the vents and electrical and sewer probably one step at a time. I think it's going to be an awesome bat cave and storage room.

In the early '80s in Sacramento I visited a house that had a backyard shelter and it was built by the current owner of that house. it was actually built above ground though like a pill box. super thick concrete walls and ceiling and a super heavy steel door. it was so cool inside there. it was amazing and even in the summertime when it was 100 plus degrees outside.

Really nice of your wife to help you clean up

Going to want to make those gaps smaller around the door to keep vermin out. Snakes, mice, etc.. would love to get in there to escape the heat or just looking for food and fall right into your bunker entrance. Looking forward to more on this!

He could probably look into what food warehouses use around their loading docks. They have weather and rodent resistant seals for all types of entrances.

I'd weld a piece of angle iron or iron strip to cover the opening edge to help keep the entrance from getting water through that gap. Cant wait to see what else you do, great video, great craftsmanship. Thanks for sharing.

Watched the whole thing. How did the tap and die set do? I got the same set from harbor freight. I was hoping you’d use it and blam-o you did. YOU WON!!! The toilet seat is a Bemis brand with almost no schmoo on it...it would look good above the mantel or in your workshop, it's versatile enough to compliment any room! Thanks AJ, the tap set worked great. It did seem to cut the holes a little tight for fasteners but they went in with the 1/4" ratchet, so not too crazy. I debated taking out the bits about the figuring it out and dimensions for time sakes, but I left them in because I thought it would break the story. I gotta get better with the welding, the ground clamp had developed a bad connection and I changed the clamp part way through the video and that helped a ton! I'm going to have to watch more of your videos since you weld a ton!

Nicely done, although I would have thought that you would want the door to have a much tighter fit than that? I personally would use a powered rack and pinion style mechanism and a full mechanical override with extremely tight tolerances. Then add an hydraulic ram as a locking mechanism. If there are heavier that air noxious fumes outside (for whatever reason), they will fill up that chamber very quickly and trap you behind that inner door, which had also better be air tight. Water can also get in and fill the stairwell under the right circumstances. Small critters likewise. Which means building a tunnel to your main structure as well.

Oh pal, you did amazing!! You should be proud :D haha for a bit I did get confused thinking I missed the side/front wheel installation and why it wouldn't rub on the sides :p it's one thing to know a welder, it's another to design these things and to such accuracy while also to such simplicity, wherby using washers to adjust it left to right. I am surprised you didn't use the trailer to reinstall it, or a ratchet system because then it'd be one lift and one pull sort of but damn it man you're strong lifting that bugger. I remember when you maybe first filmed this, clearing it out from within! As it happens I was actually thinking about you two and the shelter a week or so ago when I put lights in my cellar, the timings weird lol. I suggested lots but seems you have it all sorted, don't think I realised your engineering skills :p You know, I have a request if I may haha. I've been day dreaming of an underground shelter for years, and one idea I had is stairs which can rotate up level, the stairs doing the same as a geared train. I doubt you'd find the use here unless a robber mistakes it as a false floor, but I'm thinking if you could remove those stairs while inside to make more space or access underneath for storage? Also hide the electrical box if you decide that. I just come up with bonkers shit, I'd love to see if that stair idea works :p you gonna motorise the door for convenience? Maybe hide the shelter door as a false floor in a shed with a hoist? :P my mind's full of wonders how you'll end up doing this out buddy I'm really excited! I wish I could join, it's an amazing opportunity/project :D

I have to say that was very cool and your tool show by there well worn look that you have been doing this kind of stuff for years. I would mount a garage door opener on the wall over the door into the bunker so I could open and close it with a remote-control. I would put a hidden manual release on the out side in the event the power grid is down along with one on the inside for the same reason,

You have the makings of a really good emergency shelter there. I think you are wise to fix amd repair it, and restore that shelter to good order. Modern technology should help upgrade it. If you put some kind of canopy or awning over the hatch, it will help preserve it.

The only thing I have not seen in any previous video is an escape hatch. But just having a bunker at all is a plus

For storm shelter purposes. Since your front wheels are captive inside of the angle you might want to put some type of latch on the back so if there is a hurricane you can latch the back side down. Or possibly some round stock that keys into holes in the frame when the door is completely closed. Some rubber skirts on the door (inner tube) could help keep out driving rain. Also a pad lock to lock it up and limit your liability from local kids hurting themselves. Nice work. Hope to see more.

I thought of that after the project, I think pins that slide into the frame when it closes all the way would be the simplest. Good catch, was wondering when someone would notice.

Not gonna lie - that was an impressive fix! I can tell you're a metal-work kind of guy, when your idea of some spacers is to cut some out of metal on a machine, rather than a few 2x2 or 2x4 wood off-cuts... 😂 My skills tend to lie much more on the wood-work side of things, which makes me think - why not just built a normal set of wooden stairs like a house or deck? Some pressure treated lumber and you should be good for several decades surely? The only other thing - at 49:05 we can see that the door butts up against the side of the frame, leaving an inevitable gap which will let in water (and the nuclear fallout! 😅) - an obvious flaw in the original design. Could you either modify the frame so the door slides over the gap, or else add some kind of flashing or cap on the top of the door to cover that gap so your bunker stays dry and doesn't rot or rust out whatever stairs you do?

Caleb, thanks Man! Yeah steel is what I have some experience with because I've built a ton of security cages for vending machines. I have thought about building the stairs with tree bodies, I might do that. I noticed that about the door, I may cut that lip off so the door can close a little more, or weld a piece of iron on the door so it overhangs the gap. Thanks for watching and the comment!

I'm hooked now. I want to see this completed. For me personally, I would have updated the bunker aspect of this with high tech entry system, air filters, lithium power banks as well as lead acid and fuel based generator. Also an EMP filter. There's a multitude of other things I would have incorporated too. If the world wasn't on the brink of destruction 😅 I would have converted this space into a professional video/audio studio for high end audiophile DSD/PCM recording with visuals. 😁

I have to cut the door so it closes further and patch up some of the holes on the back end.

It could be the ultimate man cave if you clean it out and spruce it up. Big screen TV, bar, pool table, stripper pole…I mean lounge chairs😊.

is there enough room to trim the front edge of the door to fully slide over the frame and keep any rain out? (if you get a lot where you are) Or perhaps even just weld a small deflector to the lid to let any rain go over and outside the end of the frame rail. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the project

Welding and grinding dust will clog you up.

you should grind the end lip of the lid half an inch so the lid can close over the lip otherwise water (does it rain in Arizona?) will ingress .... awesome project.

It rains every 100 days or so, I need to do just that so the door can overhang, thanks Nexus!

I have experience with these gate rollers...make sure you keep them greased. If you need to replace them you can get a version with sealed ball bearings

Next project ... a new stand for the grinder :)

That's actually on the list! It had a turn signal stock holding it together but it fell out!

Could you do the stairs in a way that underneath them it could be used for storage that way no space is actually wasted? Also any concerns of water getting in at the edge once its pushed closed? Shouldn't that technically overlap the edge plate so no water can fall straight into the stairwell? Either way, I am definitely looking forward to following you on this journey!

The thing about a place like this bomb shelter it would be super easy to keep cool all summer with one small ground unit 12 Seer heat pump!! Great place for an entertainment room and the occasional Phoenix area tornado which is just about never LOL!! Big flat screen TV on one of the walls small fridge full of beer only for baseball games in the summertime! Again it would be really inexpensive to keep cool in the summer!

@@HerbOMatic Normally they'd have a grey water tank and the likes but who knows as some of them were done pretty half asses and just the structure was done somewhat professionally and the person would finish it. But there were lots of kind shady builders back during the height of the cold war scare that got a lot of these built so god only knows. But the more I saw from the video specially when you peaked inside.. I think this was simply a storm shelter and not a bomb shelter specially since it was originally suppose to open upward from where the hinges should have been and someone did a half ass job to make it a roller door (and you improved on their crap attempt)

@@SilvaDreams I would tend to agree except for the relatively large fresh water reserves and the toilet with god knows what for waste removal. With those I think it might have been a poor attempt at a bomb shelter OR a pretty long term storm shelter...

You're gonna need some kind of lock now to keep babies from opening the door. Maybe some handles too. Can't wait to see you empty out the shelter and restore lighting in there. I guess next step is rebuilding the stairs?

A secret bunker!

A simple way to help keep out the rain & most of the dust, etc. - would be to get some old inner tubes, and cut linear strips and mount them all the way around the side of the door.

Wouldn’t it be crazy if you discovered that the water & sewer drain went down into an old mine! The are literally thousands of vertical mine shafts all over! You still have a lot of discoveries to make since you do not have the original plans!

Hey Brian, I got that bug that's been going around, I was wiped out! I started back on it today!

This bomb shelter is amazing if your using it for nuclear you need to rubberise the ever doo so it makes it air tight but before you do that you need to unblock the air intake and put in AN NBC air intake. dont forget radiation cant go around the corners. i would suggest adding stair case asap getting electrics in there for light and get rid of the old furniture. find the old escape hatch as well.

I thought the whole structure was pretty well explored well enough to find an escape hatch (if there was one) in the first video. But yeah, I definitely would be uncomfortable being in this with only one way out. Especially since the door is now so easy to slide closed. If someone parks a car in the wrong place while the hatch is closed (because of rain, or whyever) ... you aren't getting out without assistance from outside.

@@ssn608 The top hatch isn't to protect from radiation, it's to keep large stuff from getting in and potentially people out. It's the bottom door that would be the tight seal. But either this was a slap-dash home built shelter or it's not a bomb shelter but a storm shelter.

Have you thought about turning it into an Airbnb?

This needs a key activated hydraulic piston to operate it. Would be sweet!

just a suggestion but a stick welder would be better for out door welding
