Abandoned - Atlantic City [Kult America]
Over the past years Atlantic City, New Jersey, has been slowly turning into a ghost city. Once one of the most popular gambling destinations, now it’s dotted with enormous abandoned hotels with little to see and little to eat. What was the reason for this decay? And what Donald Trump has to do with all of that? On today’s episode of Kult America we will find the answers to these questions.

I spent around one month in Atlantic City this year and I see huge difference between this video from 2017 and this year 2019. AC coming back to normal life. Still a lot of work need to be done. I wish to Atlantic City all the best and I'm thinking come back there before end of the year and next year many times for sure. Nice place and completely different, like on this video. It is reborn, like a Phoenix bird.
I live in Atlantic City and one thing that I would like to point out is we have a population of about 36,000 people. During the course of a year we have 20,00000 million people who visit the city. Especially in the summer the population explodes with young people coming down to visit the night clubs and bars. We are a 24 7 drinking town with Bar's on the beach and in the casinos. When you divide the amount of crime by 20 million and not 36 thousand the crime rates in Atlantic City New Jersey are quite low. The police department just released the numbers from the year 2018 and the numbers are down quite dramatically. There are camera's across the city and other making it very difficult to commit a crime and get away with it. The police have made a huge difference in the safety of tourist and residents. I live a block away from the boardwalk and I can tell you that it is one of the safest places you can go. When you look at the crime statistics only one way it is easy to think that the city is out of control but nothing is farther from the truth. I really enjoyed watching your video and you definitely did your home work. I always enjoy seeing the city from other people eyes. You are correct that the city definitely has some challenges ahead of it. Scince your visit new casinos have opened up and Stockton University has opened up a campus in Atlantic City and has revitalize a neighborhood that has been in decline for years. New small business are opening up across the city 😁 There is new life and a exciting energy especially for the upcoming summer season. I could go on and on for hours about all of the new and exciting projects across the city but I will leave that for another time. I hope that you visit sometime soon and if you do I wish you would drop me a line when you come and I can show you some cool projects that are here. Greetings from Atlantic City New Jersey USA!

I was born in Atlantic City, almost 64 yrs ago. I grew up about 20 mins west and visited AC often. I moved to go to school about the same time casinos were approved. During the construction phases, jobs were paying crazy amounts. Construction workers were coming from all over. I don't know if it can come back..........sad.
do a video like this in the summer...

I love Atlantic City and have many childhood memories there. I currently live in Wisconsin but whenever I go visit home which is southeast PA, I always make a trip to AC. It has had its shares of ups and downs but this isn’t the city I know. Go back in the summertime when it’s full of life ❤️
Atlantic City needs to diversify it's economy. I personally would like to open a craft store there. But the city needs a lot of work

Consumer, better have an armed guard.Have been down Pacific Ave.? School House Apartments, just two blocks from the casino's, they have shoot outs there.Texas Ave between Pacific and the boardwalk, when I had business there, I had a cop with me.And the crazies and junkie's, car eating holes in the ground? McDevit is a criminal, I do not need to see this crap, I worked there every day for 12 years.Way before that I drove Trumps Yacht. City is run by either amateurs or crooks. Not true about A.c.people working in Casino's, too many have arrest records. Workers came from Egg Harbor Township,Galloway Margate City, Little Egg..Mays landing. They gouge you for parking, people been shot and stabbed in the Garages. If I had not been armed,I would have been robbed (12 times 7) 84 times I was accosted,7 tines a year.I tried to fun one maggot over with my work truck. It was a mobbed up city, still is.14 street gangs, dangerous one's there. I never go now,not since I retired..
The first time I visited AC was early 80s, I went to the Playboy Casino. A place that one could find bunny waitress. AC was just beautiful and romantic in my memory.
This is why I love your videos! You never focus on one thing, this is just great!

Very enjoyable and high-quality video. Went to AC with my family last year after not going for about 4-5 years. Even in that amount of time, things have definitely dropped off...
Sad to see my city like this
I loved this. I wanted info on AC, just interested as a Brit and i got all from this video. Great work.

I remember Atlantic City in 2000. Lots of peoples. Waiter from Czech Republic. I was in the ID check age. Wooow... I did't know. Whole city ends up like supermarkets this days.
I live in New York and prior to the pandemic I have traveled to Atlantic City more then 10 times a year. Yes, it has had its challenges, but they came back strong. I love going there and I love the atmosphere. All of my years visiting I have not experienced any violence (knock on wood), and I feel comfortable traveling on the boardwalk alone, because officers were always present. Atlantic City as well as Vegas has gotten hit hard with this pandemic; however, I do believe that if everyone is compliant with the COVID-19 precautions by the CDC we all will get through this and go back to normalcy. I can’t wait to go back to Atlantic City or Vegas. I thought your video was good, but it was also depressing; however, true at the same time. Keep hope alive!
Can’t believe this downhill has gone so fast to AC. I went there for a few time during 2005-2008 for the concerts, it was still having some crowds. I just don’t know how they have lost their businesses. This is so sad.
One thing Las Vegas offered that AC never did was adult entertainment. I guarantee if prostitution was legalized and AC emulated Vegas' Sin City playbook, advertised a bit more to draw in big names again, cleaned up the beaches and put some money into sprucing up the surrounding urban sprawl area. AC would make its way back to relevancy.
That is a really interesting, compact and well-informed documentary, with a delicate personal note. Well done. Bardzo fajny filmik. Na poziomie, naprawdę. Gratulacje! Pls keep them coming.
Ok, I know where I sure the hell ain't going for vacation.
Atlantic City is like amusement parks in the Northeast. The bad weather makes it only popular in the summer. There is no marketing possible to fix bad weather. Connecticut Indian casinos stay popular to loyal consumers by catering them with luxury, rooms, meals, gifts, shows, etc. Connecticut gives their customers the wealthy lifestyle like Las Vegas. Atlantic City used to do this too but not anymore that is why their businesses have gone down.
Nice-looking clip, but through your selective filming times and locations, you really made the city look much worse than it is. I can tell that most of these shots were in the dead of winter at around 7am on a Monday morning. Try shooting the same locations at 5pm on a Saturday afternoon in the middle of August, and in better color saturation. Anyway, if you want to make the point that the city is in total decline, this video certainly does just that. Yechh!

I just left a comment about that. I think that he wanted to show one point of view and he definitely got that across. The city has changed drastically scince then and I also pointed that out. There is a new energy in Atlantic City and things are only getting better.
Atlantic City has the Beach and the Boardwalk. No other gambling City can claim that.
New Jersey is my home state and I love every town especially the seaside 🌊 towns! I worked in Atlantic City for years 2003 to 2007 when everything was jumping!I worked in the Trump Marina,Showboat, Tropicana,Borgata casinos, lots of great people and memories, met people from all over the world there! Atlantic City has a special place in my heart forever

I think it's important to note that you're going when the city actually does business. Remember, Kult America is comparing Atlantic City NOW, to how it was when he was a kid. Just like me. And things have definitely changed for the worse. It's not just a question of how it's doing now, but to compare it to how it was in its former glory.

Next time your in Jersey or NYC do a meet up!
The civic leaders and the business first never planned any contingencies for the long term competition back in the 1980's. Even when the CT casinos opened they failed to recognize that they needed long term diverse business models to face the disruptive innovation in the entertainment and gaming business that both Las Vegas and the Connecticut Casinos were implementing. While Trump and the casino interests in AC were taking the short term cash. The Wynn's, the Las Vegas Gaming Interests and the Pequots and Mohican's were planning for the long term. That is why AC is suffering.
I lived in Atlantic City from the mid 90's-2015.Things were good then.Plenty of work, economy was good, prices were low...until the first casino I worked in,(promotions at The Sands),went belly up around '07.It's been 4 years since leaving but I was there for Mariah's concert at the Hard Rock Hotel a couple of weeks ago!!!Show was awesome but not much else has changed. They do have a new casino and amusement park for the kids.Good to visit from time to time but not to move back.Just sharing 😅
Super film ;)
I like your channel 👍
Really sad what happened to AC after the hurricane when i was there 5 times it was great but not really a safe city to stay at night
I visit Atlantic city NJ this year and I enjoyed my time there. I got to see shows, walking on the beach and counting to visit it again next year. You can see my Vlog of my visit to Atlantic city NJ on my channel.
Ac is always going to go through different ups and downs. The casinos now includes hardrock ocean 1. There are rides every year I take my grandkids there. I love Atlantic city. The beach and boarswalk. There are many new restaurants and now there are outside boardwalk dining. In the summer there are famous names that do beach concerts. This video is very misleading and unfair to Atlantic city. There are outlet stores for blocks of famous brands. A new bass pro shop. And so much more . Atlantic city is still the best place I have been for fun for the whole family. Its improved alot. Come and enjoy. Oh and the best White House subs and dinner at Angelos.

I think the fact that Atlantic City is a ripoff scheme is why it's dying. I think if Atlantic City advertised itself as budget luxury for those in NJ it'd do better because I love those casinos, it's just not worth the money

I think your unemployment rate refers to the State of New Jersey.
@4:24. I'm wondering, how can you revitalize anything using cold steel modern architecture, with no human scale, with no sense of place. In my opinion this was the biggest catalyst for the destruction of our (all-over-the-world) cities, in this case Atlantic City. Because after the Second World War, speculators were given a very convenient tool to drain local economies, local environmental resources, and use the community as a cheap labor force - the modern architecture. You know, virtual (modern) art, where artist blow idea out of proportion to justify coincidental ugly box solution, for virtual developer who beguiles virtual visions, for virtual profits which never come. This is a recipe for a catastrophe. The reality has said "I call", and it will do so for any such overscaled investment: P.S. Back to economy, I read about fifteen yrs. ago that Las Vegas wanted to invest in high tech cutting edge science. So they avoided to be economic monoculture.
this reminds me of lancaster county, pa low wage jobs, outlets, a city with crime, a city falling apart, very expensive and very tacky........if you like traffic and being robbed........go to lancaster, co , pa. they also have a terrible newspaper called LNP............ ONLY GOOD FOR STARTING A BONFIRE.

This is of the money kult capital i.e. anticulture - Let's hope it'l never get revitalized. Kult of money is a disgrace, shame of mankind. Nothig personal, I understand your childhood nostalgia.
