A90 Toyota Supra Camshafts | Reverse Engineering The B58 | Kelford Cams [TECH TALK]

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

What goes into designing and manufacturing a cam for a brand new engine design that’s just hit the market? Kiel Rasmussen of Kelford Cams explains.
It was a no brainer for Kelford Cams to dive into producing an aftermarket camshaft option for the BMW B58 engine that powers the MK5 A90 Toyota Supra, and at the Performance Racing Industry Trade show Kiel explains how things go from reverse-engineering the valve lift curve through to producing a final product.
The limitations in valve lift on the intake due to the B58s rocker arm system are explained as well as how the exhaust side is much easier to deal with at this stage giving a solid 50HP increase throughout the power range with an exhaust cam swap alone before you start to see some tradeoffs in power delivery. Note for now while the rest of the aftermarket is catching up the cams are set to match the stock internals, so there is still plenty in the tank for the future.
Also discussed is heat treatment and how the camshafts must be straightened afterwards where necessary depending on the metal used, and a little bit of what goes into the PAC Racing Kelford spec'd valve springs and retainers with setups like this.

I find it funny that it takes a sports car that isn't sold as a BMW to boost the aftermarket support for BMW's B58 engine. Even with all the trolls talking smack and hating on the GR Supra, you can't deny they amount of attention and love it's getting from the aftermarket scene.

In a way yes but the S55 was practically booming in its own way to were people jumped them up to 1100whp+ but there's still the lack of popularity for them that makes it rare sadly.

@@austinweippert4065 you're correct. They were the ones that came up with it if I recall. I love freevalve but sadly due to emissions we're all faced with everything eventually becoming ev. But, im hoping a few companies will release aftermarket freevalve kits for lsx or other common gas engines in the future. :)

Really interesting from 9:00 on! Some of you may be a little confused by the talk of cam' and valve lift being different. While the valve to pivot point will usually be the same, because of the geometry of the valve train the contact point between the lobe and follower's are moving closer, and further, from the pivot point, with the leading and trailing (opening and closing) flanks having different lift rates as a result. There was a member on the HPA who had a bit of trouble following this, and I found a site with some nice graphics, and info', for him that should help an understanding of this - it's for a Honda, but exactly the same principle applies for all rocker/finger followers, even if the relationship of the three points varies - www.pattakon.com/pattakonVtec.htm With this engine, the additional links adds complecity, but it should still be easy to follow.

The moment Toyota started building trucks with chain driven transfercase, put V6 engines and automatic transmissions into as many products as possible...I realized they were steering away from what made them great. Japanese manufacturing is not nostalgic, they are always leaving the past formulas, methods, ideas...to make room for renewal. I do not see this as a strength. Now you're telling me the latest Supra has a BMW engine that relies heavily on augmenting mechanical timing through PWM and hydraulic pressure? It's like watching a beloved commander who led you through hell and multiple battles slowly morph into a hot yoga practicing, tree-hugging, pansexual who is rooting for Bernie Sanders, who wants to show you their latest gadget that really exfoliates their skin. Not a Supra. Fuk this I'm out.

Let's be honest here. Which do u ever see people tuning, modding, etc wise in the car scene with BMW vs Lexus. If anything,Toyota doesn't have a thing in there line up worth putting in the mk5 and if anything they can't make a i6 for one car soley since it'd be too expensive. So they went to a company that made engines that were tunable and modded unlike theres that are rarely ever tuned or touched at all unlike the 2j itself. If anything there such a family friendly manufacturer that it doesn't makes any kind of sense to just throw millions out the window like that no matter how big of a company they are,it's going to take years to recover from the sales they'd lose if they were to build it themselves.
