    Thanks for all the info! I was having a hard time trying to find details about the HDMI 4K output signal of the A6400 and you nailed it all in one video. I'm gonna pair it with Elgato Facecam 4K to upgrade our school YT Lives to 4K/UHD (currently at QuadHD using a Samsung S8+ with ivCam software). You're a life-saver! Excellent video. I was all set to get the a6500. But, after seeing that the screen was hard to see in daylight compared to the a6400, I switched to the a6400. Yes, the a6500 has IBIS and s6400 doesn't. But, the flip up screen and brighter monitor are important. So, now, I'm getting the a6400.

    I’m interested in being able to effectively dual record from my a6400 so I have a backup copy - am I right in thinking you can do this? Record to the cameras SD card and an external hard drive attached into an atomos ninja? Would I need to get the ninja 5 to do this or is there a cheaper version that would suffice? I typically would be recording at 4K 25fps and using manual focus so the face detection etc doesn’t matter. Thank you!

    Hi! Yes it's possible to record both internally and externally at the same time, with the AF limitations I mentioned in the video. If you want to record 4K I think that the Ninja V is probably the cheapest option. I can't remember the price of the Black magic Design Video Assist, do you could check those. Unlike monitors (where there's a plethora of cheap options) I don't think there are any recorders m

    Does the a6400 HDMI output camera audio as well, for example if I were using a capture card for streaming and wanted camera audio? I have a specific use case where I'd like to route audio from my Scarlett audio interface in to the camera's mic in port and then stream it, but there's no audio transmitted when using the camera as a webcam over usb.

    Hi Roger Thanks for your video, great help! I try to set my HDMI clean output to 1080p/30fps (29.97) but i can't manage to do it... it's only 24 or 60. My external recorder recognizes 4k/30 or 1080/60 but i want the sony to send an 1080p/30 signal. Do you know how to do it? Thanks

  • @RogerinFinland

    @RogerinFinland

    According to Sony's help website for the a6400 it is only possible to output 24 or 60 via HDMI (in NTSC). I assume that in PAL it's possible to do it in 25 or 50 since I only use 25p. So unfortunately it doesn't seem to be a possible option.

    So the camera only allows when using an external monitor to display all the stuff on the small screen on the monitor when filming in 1080? And when you film 4K the external monitor will only be the image with no onscreen display? That’s a bummer.. because you can’t see where it’s focusing, if it’s recording or not, audio lvls etc on the bigger monitor mounted on top when filming 4K

  • @RogerinFinland

    For that I used to use the tools in the monitor itself (audio levels and focus peaking). Also in 4K using a monitor does not do face detection autofocus if you record internally to the camera. As said, plenty of quirks.

    To do that you'll need anyway a power solution (I guess a dummy battery and a big battery/wall outlet), which usually helps with overheating. Keeping the screen up/out from the body tends to help with overheating. My other experience with the a6400 and HDMI was using it for a short film, with a Ninja V. It was outputting 4K via the HDMI continuously, powered with an NPF via a dummy battery and never did overheat. Our shooting days were maybe 3-4h with the camera and the Ninja V running all the time and it was OK. All indoors in normal temperature conditions.

    I don't know how dumb this questions is but if I use a monitor that displays in 4k, and my camera is shooting in 1080p, the actual shot will be 1080p right? Like when I go to edit it, everything actually depends on the camera's settings right?

  • @RogerinFinland

    That's correct, for sure in the case of internal recording. If you use an external recorder (like the Ninja V), the a6400 outputs the same resolution than the internal recording is set so your comment is also correct in that case. And not only it wasn't a dumb question, but you asked it respectfully, so all good 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😊

    Unfortunately I no longer have the a6400 of the Ninja V to test it out, but if my memory serves me right it did work. We shot a short film with it and the microphone was plugged into the camera and everything recorded in the Ninja V. You might have to do some testing with the audio options both from the camera and the Ninja V. Try ProRes Vs DNxHQ, check how many tracks do you have enabled in the Ninja, what is mapped to them etc.

    Do all the tests and check the specs carefully. No monitor of that size is 4K, they are 1080p at best. The 4K labels is because they accept a 4K signal as input. The Feelworld F5 Pro is 5.5", 1080p and it accepts 4K up to 30p, 4K DCI up to 24p and 1080p up to 60p. If you have the camera in slo-mo (a6400 at 1080p, 100/120fps) that shouldn't work. Does it work at 1080p? The 4k output select is available only if a working connection via HDMI with an external device is active If you are not getting any signal, the problem is not in the greyed out menu item but in the connection itself. Either the camera HDMI port, the cable or the monitor HDMI input (or any combination of the previous) is the problem. Does the camera output HDMI to other devices? Does the monitor work with other cameras? Have you tried different cables? You'll have to test a few things to identify what's going wrong.
