A Year of No Sugar: Eve Schaub

In an age when sugar is continuously unmasked as a health villain, the Schaub family spent twelve months without added sugar of any sort: no fructose, no refined cane, no molasses, no honey, no maple syrup, no corn syrup-in an attempt to live healthier and better. Along the way, Eve Schaub became a sugar sleuth, science geek, and stand in for the rest of us who aren't quite ready to shun the sugar just yet. It's a fascinating experiment that reveals just how tightly we're all held hostage by sugar, and what it takes to kick the habit.

I'm on Month 4 ... Life is so much better without sugar ... Lost 23 lbs without trying so far! I also think a lot more clearly. My friends are so sad for me, but ironically I'm sad for them because I see how damaging the sugar is to the human body.

When I went sugar free and low carb I had no choice but to make most of my food from scratch because nearly everything has fructose in it. I have cut out all added sugar, simple carbs and preservatives over the last year. I have lost nearly 50 pounds, have way more energy and feel fantastic. Now the idea of sugar is entirely unappealing.

I stopped sugar in February, 2019! I am so pissed that it was after the death of my Ole Mother from type #2 diabetes that lead me to investigate this disease and its causes and found so much information about the bad diet choices that is infecting people all over the world. My family is careful about inviting me over as I have a tendency to lecture on the food choices being offered. I feel so much better after a few months with clear mind and autoimmune issues clearing up! One of the big problems is Governments catering to big food and Pharma as every evil thing always can be traced to the money and the greed of the rich wanting to get richer. We really need to get back to real foods.

you will meet 2 types of people, those who say your mom made a choice, or that she was a victim. i happen to believe she was a victim of such a sinister, demonic trick - being done by that wealthy elite (who have ties to a certain middle east tribe) who literally gain power by drinking the blood of its host victims. we have many ways to die, some used sugar. but someone, somewhere, makes a profit off our deaths. there once was a man born in the late 1800s that tried his best to exterminte the vermin that want our foreskins, but his enemies used a gang mentality and defeated this great man. now, that monster has grown to epic proportions and can only die by eating itself. no outside force can do it.

hi there..hope your sugar abstinence is going well. Just a tip- for you or others....the first 3-5 days of sugar detox is pretty rough. I would highly recommend- you do NOT have a sugary treat- just once a month. Why? because- that single days treat, you will crash all over again. you will need to go thru the detox again...esp hard for kids. My friend- who gave up all sugar; and her hubby and daughter..(i have no young kids so I am using her) For her girls 7th bday- she made a watermelon 'cake'...her daughter loved it...there are s many tips online to make amazing sugar/flour/dairy treats. to treat your kids once a month- is like treating your drug addicted kid who has quit; a taste of their old drugs; just for special.

Many of these very important videos do not place enough emphasis on how essential it is to cook one’s own food from actual vegetable, fruit, ocean/lake/river fish (not farmed) and naturally fed animals (for Australia, kangaroo meat is among the best, available in supermarkets such as Coles and Woolworth). To get rid of about all added sugar, simply do not buy any prepared/processed food and, if really needed, buy only carbohydrates that have not been refined (whole meal bread, flower, pasta, brown rice etc). The old saying “do not eat anything your grand-grand-parents would not have recognized as food” is clear, to the point, simple to follow and so true.

I wish my mother had not allowed me to consume so much sugar in my childhood. My health, my teeth, my emotions have been damaged by all the sugar I've eaten. Glad finally, *finally* we are told how sugar is slowly killing us. That sugar is directly and indirectly the cause of our chronic medical issues. At age 52 I am trying to cut sugar out of my diet. I did it once before for 4 months and felt amazing. But it's been years since and I'm still trying to get my life and my health back by ommiting refined sugar again. When I do give in I try not to get really down on myself and start again the next day. My pain and fatigue from cfs and Fibromyalgia improves so much when I stop consuming refined sugar. Hope you try and do without sugar for a significant amount of time. Good luck and enjoy feeling better.

I haven’t had sugar (except for trace amounts) for over a year. Weight is way down. Energy is way up. I don’t need as much sleep. I don’t have food cravings. No heartburn anymore. My tastes also dramatically changed. Stuff that didn’t taste “sweet“ before now really does. I use Stevia, Monk fruit, and sugar alcohols and they are great. I never want to eat sugar filled food again. It made me miserable and I think was the cause of a lot of inflammation in my body which is also much better. I’m not saying it’s a magic bullet or something. That eliminating sugar combined with several other factors is probably the number one thing you can do to feel physically better overall.

I was a Coca-Cola and french fries vegan for a while. That's somewhat hyperbole but not without truth. I use the description to make a couple of points about veganism and how addictive sugar is. I'm about to try to give sugar up for a third time. The first two times I described the withdrawal as "giving birth to myself" due to the constant cranial pressure I felt and a near-migraine sensation as a result for upwards of a week. After about two weeks I started to feel pretty darn good. Within a month I was back in the habit no matter how much I vowed to myself. Hopefully this time I will apply the lessons learned.

I have now been off of added fructose for almost 3 years now, drinking water and milk, and I have ONE glass of Lucozade Original daily, because I read in David Gillespie's book that Lucozade Original contains glucose and no fructose. Sometimes I wonder though because it now tastes just as sweet as sugar sweetened drinks used to do because my taste threshold has dropped. I used to think Lucozade Original tasted only slightly sweeter than carbonated water, but now tastes as good as Coke used to. And, as an experiment, I actually took a tiny sip of coke and spat it out because it was disgustingly too sweet! :-)

Fantastic speech, fantastic woman! I salute Eve for being a great mother, too, and a healthy sane role model to her children, and others, for that matter, when she cleverly decided to go public about her "experiment". She's done a ton of hard work of studying and collecting data and experience over that sugarless year with her family and she is brilliant and eloquent enough to share it with others in the most fun and concise way. Without preaching, patronizing and fear mongering. It was a delight listening to her seminar. It's exactly as she says: It's a choice we make. The information has been out there for everybody for decades! Therefore fat and unhealthy people cannot be helped unless they willingly accept and learn that information and decide to act upon it, finally start loving themselves and do something about the processed industrially manufactured garbage they shove down their pie holes! What is it they need to do about it? Simple, really: AVOID IT LIKE A PLAQUE!!! Same goes for trans fats, refined carbs and processed meats! Otherwise I have no sympathy for them complaining about their morbid obesity or health issues that they brought upon themselves with their life long stupid diet choices.

I'm a late/post baby boomer who's mom grew up in the depression and WW-II. I think part of the psychology behind our parents' eagerness to make sweets available was they grew up with sweets as real treats and dietary expressions of love, particularly because of war rationing. Most sugar production during the war was diverted to making bombs; that is, consider refining it further, a source of carbon-hydrogen-oxygen molecules. The industry was stimulated during the war and had massive over capacity at the end. The sugar lobby was cash rich and the rest is known history to people who read these comments.

I remember when i gave up sugar in my tea and stopped eating sugary treats and went to work as normal as you do without thinking ,, well after several hours tho i felt proper ill which i now know was low blood sugar or a hypoglycemic reaction felt really sick with a headache nausea and dizzy ect ,i was lucky to have some dried fruit in my bag that literally saved me, over the next few days the withdrawal symptoms i got from no processed sugars in my diet was so cruel. wont ever go back now i realise that stuff's poison, and feel much better for it... Best advise is to slowly ween yourself off of it and still eat fruit as fruit doesn't raise insulin levels like processed sugars. Infact why not just keep a bunch of bananas to snack on daily, throughout the day the benefits of this ive noticed are really good

When I was 18 I stopped eating "sugary" things - things where the sweetness was the main ingredient, i.e chocolate, cake, cookies etc.. In 4 weeks, my skin went from what I would describe as medium strength acne to almost completely clear. I was still having some sugar in processed food. But I couldn't keep it up. I tried. Over and over again. Despite the amazing benefits to my skin, I couldn't do it. It's taken 25 years to finally manage to keep it up for more than a couple of months, I'm determined never to eat these things again and my skin looks amazing. I'm still shovelling some processed foods down my face, feeling bad every time because of the added sugar.

About 80% Fruits, Veggies, Nuts, Seeds and Legumes and 20% Fish, fowl and dairy. Started at 110Kg now 65.5Kg. My weakness is Biscuits (Cookies), if I open a packet I will eat the whole damn thing, so the only way to not do so, is not to have them in the house. As soon as the holidays came around I gained some weight back and haven't been able to break away from sweets and junk again. I had to avoid sweets altogether because I crave more as soon as I have a little. Maybe try something like Atkins? Cutting out extra carbs may help, but that's just a thought.

My son was born perfectly healthy and is thriving. I now weigh what I weighed before pregnancy. We're both doing well and thriving. I guess everybody is different. Who know?!

Just eating real food is the easiest place to start. If it comes in a form other than more than one step from the farm, don't buy it. In other words, eat eggs, fish, cheese (1 step), milk (no sugar added), vegetables, fruit, etc. And as far as the lovingly baked cookies - it is different. Eating the occasional cookie that grandma makes is very different than being overwhelmed by excessive sugar consumption day in and day out.

Why would the label say, "Added Sugar" instead of "Fructose"? I am not happy with this new label. Just because it has been added, doesn't make it fructose. Dextrose is also added sugar, and dextrose is basically glucose and has none of the negative effects that fructose has. Dextrose is a carbohydrate, is a sugar, and there's nothing wrong with it. However, it is not sweet, and therefor would never be added to make something sweet.

I don't if this is because this video is so old but today at least I think it's pretty clear it is insulin causing the health problems. So for me I've eliminated carbs almost. I've listened to many videos like this where the speaker talks about the dangers of sugar but just can't bring themselves to actually follow through. She says she couldn't even consider giving up glucose, only fructose. And I've heard other speakers say fruit is OK. That doesn't seem true imo. The best thing for me in going low carb is I'm no longer having daily very strong craving for carbs. And for me food shopping got super easy after a little bit of learning.

Many people in America don't eat healthy and settle for an unhealthy diet due to any number of reasons: lack of knowledge about food and nutrition, a busy work schedule/less time to cook from home, etc.. Let's try being more encouraging and less condescending. Have a little more empathy. Cheers.

In my list there are a shit ton of ready made foods such as cheese, nuts, fruit, baked bread, yogurt, peanut butter, ready made noodles, canned tuna black and black olives. You can have a tuna melt.on Ezekiel sprouted grain bread and have no added sugar. Avocado toast, fried egg sandwiches, nuts and plain yogurt as snacks. Peanut butter on sprouted toast. Hummus and vegetables for lunch. Peanut butter, vegetable chicken, and noodle stir fry. Homemade oatmeal with cinnamon and berries, grill cheese sandwiches with sprouted grain bread, rottisary chicken with potatoes/rice and a salad. Beans and rice, barley chicken soup, etc....

@@violettippet5246Don't give me that fear mongering corporate line. It's micronutrients and not the carbs that provide benefit. Common grains are also naturally deficient in many key nutrients but the companies fortify them to prevent people from searching for and eating natural whole foods that contain the micros. Meats, vegetables, fruit, fish. Never mind the common wheat products can affect celiacs and the gluten-free premium should be moot and the wheat just be simply avoided outright. Grains and starches put people on the hamster wheel and they cannot get off. They're cheap though and they're fortified. But completely unnecessary and can be completely excluded once people can afford a battery of fruits, vegetables, and meats, with the fruits being the "desert portion" of such a diet. By virtue of the fiber, fruits are inherently self-limiting in terms of consumption of carbs whereas grains are not. Gluconeogensis exists and that is why carbs are not strictly necessary except in very small doses. Glucose will be produced in some manner. I can eat 8-16 blackberries and no other carbs. Cellulose-based veggies are not eat for carbs, but for the micros. The crisis is a matter of macro-oversaturation. French fries are loaded with carbs and addictive as hell.

I cut back on coffee creamer in the same amount of calories to make up for the addition of figs. Guess what happened? In two weeks I had gained 15 pounds. Figs contain fructose, just like bananas and honey.

Hi RETN, Where you learned Sugar was not good and that's a plus and fact, you and your husband could have agreed to do this, not make your children do it especially since they were so young! When will people learn that we teach by example. You and your husband doing this and not your children being made to do this would have made them take note of what you two were doing and seeing how it worked for you, would have made them willing to want to join you without the tears you made them cry. Even if they did not join you, you left an example for them in the future to remember what you did to get healthy and they end up doing the same thing THEN! Especially if in the future they receive a doctor's diagnosis about something and they can know how to go about helping their health from remembering your example! Now you left the possibility for them to resent it and say in their mind, "When I grow up I'll never do this to my children."

Stop eating sugar is not enough. You should also eat less bread, cookies, .. that are made using wheat flour. Wheat flour is too easy to digest. It doesn't give you fullness in your stomach. So, you end up eating more. Plus, wheat flour eventually turns into sugar after digesting anyway. Also, don't consume too much dairy products, especially milk. They contain too much saturated fats and lactose. They not only mess up your digestive system, but also lead to cardiovascular diseases. Get your calcium from lightly cooked vegetables instead! Collard green, kale, bok choy, Japanese mustard spinach, ... all contain tons of calcium, vitamins A, C, E, and K. And above all, fiber! Don't listen to all the quack doctors and TV commercials. Listen to your own digestive system! When your digestive system is messed up, you should know that your diet is fucked up. Then your health is also fucked up.
