Seeing your son whine about having to finish his chore was so nice. I know it sounds strange, but sometimes I feel like I’m doing something wrong when my daughter does that because people tend to hide that part of family life. So thanks for including that.

I just have to say a huge thank you to Jess, I always failed at growing food when I was a young person. I never wanted to try again. I watched her grow lettuce in a bag of soil and thought I could try that method and grow radishes. Well, I failed, they grew but never bulbed up. Did I quit? NO!!! I tried again, with actual lettuce and it grew all fall and over winter (in my laundry room when it got too cold), we had enough to put on sandwiches and tacos. This spring, I put in 16x4 foot bed, I am growing herbs, onions, radishes, and transplanted my happy little lettuce plants and they are all doing so well, I planted in the garden almost 3 weeks before my last frost date (I am in zone 7B too) and when we had a few cold nights, I went on line and figured out how to protect my precious garden and they all pulled through. I am having so much fun, I am not afraid to fail in the garden any more. I had one little onion start peter out so I pulled it and put in a new little onion start, not a failure, just a little bump in the road, my Cilantro didn't come up, I put in a few more seeds, we shall see what happens. I just measured out were I will put my next beds in, I am super excited. Who knew this was so much fun, oh, I guess all of you did, but now I do too. Grow on fellow gardeners.

My aunt had a collie (looked like a fat lassie lol) it was so laid back that it would nap in the garden and let birds take the fur clumps off her! She also let chicks crawl all over her too. You'd go out and she would wag tail but not get up. She would have several chicks snuggled up to her to stay warm. I still miss that big old dog.

We were encouraged to try during the lockdown. Our 8x10 foot deck has an herb wall, three green bean towers, two tubs of carrots, three tubs of ginger, lemongrass, tumeric, a beet tub, a radish tub and a patio tomato. I get a full salad several times a week and enough greens for morning juice smoothies! I had not tried any of those things on my deck until last year. Watering is a little tricky 😊. I forgot the two elephant ears (edible roots) and cana lilies (edible tubers and flowers).

The dog hair trick TOTALLY works! We built a little garden on the front of a house we were renting because it was about all we could do. No fence and loads of rabbits and squirrels in the area. They kept coming and either eating the plants or digging holes in these little beds. I brushed my dog and worked the hair into the soil, especially around all of the edges and we didn't have any more trouble, even the neighbors cat stopped using it as a litter box!! Bonus!! 😄

My paternal grandmother used to burn her shed hair. She said that she didn't want birds making nests out of it, although she was an avid gardener and loved nature. My mom and I were mystified by that. Years later, after they had both passed away, I learned that in some African mythology, "birds" represented witches and "making nests", casting spells. As my grandmother was the granddaughter of African enslaved people (whom she knew in her childhood), I wasn't surprised that she held this view. What did surprise me was that she realized it as a superstition and never passed it on to her own grandchildren. Sorry for this long post, but Jess speaking about the birds lining their nests with Bear's shed hair brought up this memory from the 1960s. 😊

Y’all stay safe today. Having our “tornado safe spot” ready helps give me peace of mind, but I always worry about my garden, too, on days like today. I have to remind myself that these plants have been around way longer than I have, and surrender my worries to nature to allow the peace to replace it.

I’m 51 years old and I remember, when I was a child, we still had seasonal fruits and vegetables. If you wanted watermelon, you had it in July. Apples were a fall fruit. Zucchini and tomatoes were Summer foods. I kind of miss that. I definitely miss my Granny’s vegetable garden and the soup she made from it. I, also, let my dog hair fly. If there is a lot at once (she has two coats as well) I put it and/or dryer lint in a suet cake holder and hang it in the carport. It stays dry and my birds love it! 💜 I am trying a container garden this year, I’m so excited! Thanks for sharing!

Jess, this was one of the best lessons you've ever shared. That gardening is not pass/fail, that we only have to partner with what is essentially a natural process. Such a wonderfully inspirational pep talk 👏🏽 I also loved the brushing Bear segment. He is sweet ❤

Thank you so much for all your positive messages. I'm about to start a new garden for the first time in 15 years. My sister already shot down the idea saying it's not worth it. Too much effort , not financially viable etc. I told her its definitely worth a try. I've been surrounded by so much negative attitude my whole life which doesn't help. Watching this channel is kind of like 'watering' the growing gardener 😆

aww Jess, and to all of you guys out there: you have inspired me to learn to garden. I have been watching Roots&Refuge for about 2 or 3 years now and when I started watching all I had was a couple cactus plants I had managed to keep alive for more than a year, lol. Now yesterday, I harvested carrots for the first time ever, I grew reg carrots and some Cosmic purple carrots from baker creek that I ordered. I have learned how to grow the most delicious tomatoes and greens and peas, now I'm learning about herbs and medicines. At first it was far fetched but now it doesnt seem so scary to me. So, in short, I agree Jess, all we have to do is just try. Its a huge inspiration to me to learn about the way it was done back in the day! It's simple, and we lack that sort of flavor in todays age.. All my love to you guys,

New sub here. I see everyone calls you Jess. I went to school with a girl that looks soooo much like you. She was the coolest most laid back girl and she'd say things like you did in the video. Like, "who cares? Just try it. If people laugh at you, they're stupid, just ignore them." I went to her house a few times and we talked about God (we were in 5th or 6th grade). Her name was Jessica. I grew up in a border town in Texas. It be cool if that's you. If it's not you, then I think I've hung out with your doppelganger. Lol... for some reason I never forgot about Jessica.

I walked outside once, after getting laundry caught up and house cleaned, to find him watering MY garden!! 😳 I asked what on earth he was doing and he said "I picked watering for my chore!" I laughed out loud! Watering is NOT a chore I told him, it is a pleasure ☺❤ So sorry to hear about your shoulder! I have found adding cypress to deep blue helps immensely! 💙 heal well

I so love your pep talks Jess. It reminds me of the stories I have heard about the great depression and how the people who fared best were the farmers. Yes, the dust bowl areas not so much but people who were able to keep growing food could feed their families. My husband's grandfather was killed in a workplace accident and his wife was left with a bunch of kids to raise on her own. How did she feed them - a huge backyard garden - she grew up growing food so it wasn't something new to her but it was essential in order to feed her kids. And also during the two world wars - same thing. The people who grew food not only fed their families but also the larger community. Taking care of each other - food is love. I do a lot of hand watering in my garden - what I like about it is that I use that opportunity to do some serious bonding with my plants - and take a good look at how they are doing and ways in which I can help them. Thanks again for all that you and Miah do.

Can't thank you enough for the educational content of your vlog. Today in NC I went to a greenhouse garden place that I love. I couldn't resist putting a 4 thing of red bell pepper plants along with yellow bell peppers, green bell peppers and jalapenos. I got a few other things as well. When I went to pay I told the lady I'd been watching a KZread gardening site for at least a year and then asked her "Is it too early to plant pepper plants?" You trained us well Jess! She said yes, it was too early, the low temperatures should be 50 and above before you plant peppers in the garden or pots or whatever. I put the pepper plants back. But I knew enough to ask the question😀 Thank you Jess!!!

EVERYONE believes that they have the BEST DOG in the world, and they are all right!!😉 Although I know I’ve said this before, but Bear reminds me so much of my dog Rocky, that I lost a couple years ago and he was absolutely THE BEST DOG ❤️🐾😉 Bear is AWESOME 🐾❤️ I remember when I first found that type of brush I couldn’t believe what I had been missing with my long-haired Shepherd mix Rocky. It made my job at least 10 times easier. That dog will die for you, and I know you’d do the same. You two remind me of myself and Rocky. The fact that you talk about your failures as well as your successes is great because it is a fact of gardening. Not everything works for everyone all the time. All gardeners have occasional failures and every year is like a new experiment because temperatures and rain amounts vary. I used your tip about the saliva for stuck seeds and this morning I was able to remove the 3 that were stuck on my tomatoes. Thank you!

I have used a Furminator brush/comb on my Golden Retrievers for over 15 years ... when they first came out with them ... I love it!!! The only negative thing about a Golden is just how much hair they shed ALL YEAR LONG!!! Furminator really makes a huge difference in keeping the hair shedding more manageable! The birds do love the fur for their nests :o)

Our late dog Millie would shed year around. And she was part german shepherd. One time my hubby brushed her down at the end of our driveway by the gravel road we live on. And after he was done it looked like a sheep had been sheared. One of our neighbors called and asked if all our cats and dog were accounted for. He saw that hair pile and thought a wild animal had gotten one of our animals. Hubby laughed and told him, no just brushed Millie. I could never believe how much hair that dog shedded all the time. You'd think she should of been bald!

We had frost 5 weeks after our last frost date this year. A lot falls through the cracks here. I "fail forward" a lot, but a lot of successes comes through too. I love that freedom. I'm thankful for that freedom because we never know when we may not have that. Some places and people don't have that freedom and need to feed their family. I'm very grateful I'm in a place that I have the time and grace for space to learn. You encourage me so much. Sometimes just seeing that your out in the garden gives me the will to go get out in mine even through the pain.

Although the advice is meant in the best intentions, I find that sometimes just trying and seeing a little bit of success is all one truely needs. To firstly keep going and keep growing, but also to know from first hand experience that every garden is different and to adapt to your own garden not someone elses.🥰 loving the words of wisdom Jess!

Simply - thanks! We got a late snow here in Germany this week (kind of expected). The Seedlings are screaming to be released, but got to wait just a bit more. There's an expression here: "April, April, der macht was er will" Basically: April does what it wants! One day it will be 20 Centigrade (68 F,) the next -1 C (30 F) with freezing rain and/or snow. We just have to be patient. But, as you know, it's not always easy to be patient. In the past I've lost entire beds and fruit blossoms in late April. 😥 But you persevere with a new planting. It may come late or not at all. That's when you experience the Zen of gardening. The sound of one plant growing......
