Family story: In the 60s, (in Fayetteville, AR, btw!!) my sister in law was working at Sears. At the time, you could order ANYTHING from Sears, and someone ordered pheasant chicks and didn't come get them. So she wound up taking them home and launching an entire family project of raising as many of them as survived. I've heard a lot over the years about the first batch, how they ordered others, raised them, exhibited them at 4H fairs and so on. At one point, most of their backyard became an enclosed bird habitat. And the barren ground greatly benefitted!!

With snows and icy winters, a static coop has the advantage of being easier because you don't have a wet saggy net or frozen ground to deal with. The big secret is deep bedding inside the coop run. We put down 5 inches of mulch and the chickens love it, no more muddy feet or nasty eggs, and no stink. They will in turn make the mulch into compost and we will remove and replace it with fresh. They love scratching for worms through it too.

There is a little girl in our church who came up up to me one day and said she wanted some butter beans. I was so confused. I said baby I don’t have any butter beans. She thought about it shook her head and then said noooo, peanut butter and jelly. Once again I told her I didn’t have any. Then, it was like 💡 🤔 💡ding ding ding. I had given her some jellybeans one time. I said jellybeans?? And she said “yes”. Whew! Bahaha gotta love little kid brains. 💛

So exciting, baby chicks. Our meat chicks-25 and of course I couldn’t resist a few additional layers. I too purchased colored egg layers. We will get them at the end of the month. Need to build tractor for them. First time doing meat birds we will process ourselves. New adventure! I have the same heat plate. Works well. Because of our inspiration, I’m getting cattle panels to make trellis’s this year for cucumbers, beans and tomatoes. Our last frost is last week of May. Yesterday was 72 here so spring cleaned the two chicken coops. In 50’s again and 30’s at night for 10 day forecast. Watching you and your garden planting, keeps me motivated and hopeful for planting. Thanks for your inspirational videos!! Greetings from Maine.

I’ve never had a static coop, always a floorless mobile one, and based on how easy and clean it is, I really don’t think I’d ever recommend a static coop to any chicken keepers. You can leave the floorless coop static for a time, and move it around if need be so you can distribute the poop, but shoveling and scraping a coop floor just seems so clunky when there is an easier way!

We have a static coop and 9 hens. This year, when Spring was official, we began getting more eggs, every day, than ever before. Our land is wild and hilly, between two national forests, so a moveable coop is not an option. We have to pull plants from the garden and feed them fresh greens to make up for the lack of grass in the run.

I know youve raised tons of chickens before. I have too but a few years ago a friend showed me a solution to those horrible poultry waterers. Baby chicks tend to kick shavings in the waterer and cause a wicking effect. She used a rabbit water bottle and omg total game changer and Ive never gone back since. I ended up advancing to rabbit water nipples for adult poultry too. The rabbit ones work with water fowl too and I had a mixed flock so that is why I stuck with rabbit water nipples for my auto set up. It worked for rabbits, quail, chickens, geese, and ducks. I know water fowl need some deep water too in order to cleae their faces and wash etc but they mucked it up for everyone including themselves. Versus changing the water a hundred times a day to make sure everyone had clean water I used my auto waterer set up (55 gallon food grade barrels, maple tubing, rabbit water nipples, tee connectors). Worked great. I didnt have to worry about whether anyone had clean water for the rest of the warm months. I fully recommend it. For chicks themselves large rabbit bottles are like 4 bucks and work amazing in brooders. When shavings get soaked in water they get spent and are no longer good for their wet poops. Rabbit bottles leak a little but nothing like poultry waterers. Also you know chicks cant jump in it and cool themselves off too quick. All those years of birds and when I saw that I felt I wasted soooooo much time on those horrible poultry waterers. Its nice to have that peace of mind that they cant stuff the water source too. You show them like Miah did but with the bottles and they teach each other

I know i will get my chickens and another coop for the perfect price at the perfect time! Yall giving me baby chip fever tho lol :)

We always refer to this time of year as “the pollening”. I don’t wash my car until after the pollening 🤣

I’m with Miah, after building a massive statice coop I am more excited to have a chickshaw to run behind my new cows 😊
