A Week in the Life of a Princeton University Student

Музыка

Heylooo~ my name is Preeta :) I'm currently a junior at Princeton University in the Neuroscience department and on the pre-med track. Follow me along to all of my classes and activities during a very normal week in my life as a Princeton undergraduate student.
This was all filmed April of 2017 when I was in my sophomore Spring semester. The footage was super long and I lost motivation quite a few times (oops) along the way which is why I'm uploading this my junior Fall.
The footage is of pretty poor quality; I'm a broke college student y'all. I couldn't afford a GoPro but bought a similar action camera that I could bring into classes with me without arising any suspicion or alarm. I'm still really new to vlogging in public so I avoided talking to the camera because I feel super embarrassed vlogging in front of other people lol. Also the camera movement is super shaky at certain points, sorry about that. I turned my stabilizer off for a certain part and then forgot to turn it back on for a little while.
If you're confused about any of the terms I used in this video like 'precept', 'Princeton Preview', 'individual sessions', 'drill', I'll explain them a little more in depth below!
Princeton Preview:
An event in April for seniors in high school who applied and got accepted to Princeton to come, attend (a select number of) classes, sleep over with a host student, go to club open houses and looks around campus to help make a decision. It takes place over 2 days.
Late meal: A meal option for those on the dining hall meal plans. If you can't make it to lunch or dinner (since our dining halls are only open for certain periods of time) you can go to late meal in our campus center and order meals or snacks. Late meal happens right after lunch or dinner closes. It does cost money though, unless you are on the unlimited meal plan (which all freshman are required to have).
Precept:
In large classes, especially introductory classes, in order to ensure that students get more attention from an instructor, students sign up for a precept in which lecture materials may be reviewed over with a graduate TA. Precept activities range but they're basically just small-group sessions run by a graduate student.
Individual Sessions:
I think this may be unique to East Asian languages but these are one-on-one sessions with a professor that last for 10-20 minutes. They allow the language professors to evaluate how the student is improving in conversation skills and allows the student to practice.
Drill:
Also probably unique to the East Asian languages. For Korean, drill classes were classes that emphasized practicing talking with our classmates, as compared to lecture where we were introduced to grammar patterns and vocabulary and didn't really do much conversing. In Chinese, drill class was recitation of the textbook and a dictation quiz for the chapter covered that week.

    Preeta Acharya wowww Preeta props to u being able to handle going to classes back to back everyday! I have two to three classes a day with large gaps and I don't think I could go to almost all of my classes in a day. Congrats on declaring your major! You will kill Neurosci!!! Much love from a fellow college student (I'm a freshman)💕💕💕 Question: How are you doing/feeling? Junior seems like a lot of work at a glance.

    I am in love with this video!!! I watch a ton of college week in my life/day in my life videos, but I want to say that yours is one of my favorite. Please continue pursuing this if you have the time and energy to do so! I love how you put a little schedule on the side of the screen! It was really cute and organized and fun to watch you go down the list of classes/activities. I like how chill this video is. It isn’t trying to be like other videos: it is simple and straight to the point and I just really enjoyed it. Seeing you learn korean (through language and dance) really inspires me to connect back to my roots, which I hope to do when I go to college. I am rooting for you!!! This is a great start and I wanted to just let you know that this video is wonderful. Happy New Years!!

Maybe it’s because I’m struggling with my college application process right now, it’s just such a burden to me. Essays are super stressful to me since I’m not a native English speaker...so I’m just wondering if there is any tips that you would like to share on that? Thank you and love you! Hi Preeta! This video was so awesome to watch. It really solidified my wonderful views of Princeton. Back in late March/early April in my junior year I went on an east coast college trip, and I ended up getting a tour for Princeton on Ivy Day! Luckily there were no seniors anxiously awaiting their results in my group! I am actually applying for the Neuroscience concentration at Princeton and following a Pre-Med track as well, so I'm so glad that I've found a student there that I can live vicariously through until I get my results next March! I'm not sure if you have made a stats video yet, but if you haven't, I'm sure it would not only help me, but any high school student who has fallen in love with Princeton! I do have one question though: have you had positive experiences with professors that teach classes like Neuroanatomy and Life Cycle of Behaviors? I'm trying to get a feel for what the professor-student relationship is like. Thanks so much :)

    hi preeta, love ur videos :-) this one was so insightful! but i have a few questions if u dont mind: what is a concentration declaration? the one-on-one’s with ur korean prof - are they in front of the whole class? and what happens when u skip class.. like what does absence do to ur record? in orgo, how much guidance do u receive for ur labs and how long does it take for u to write a lab report? seems so tedious! so so sorry for so many questions...but u seem like the most reliable person to ask college questions to

  • @PreetaAcharya

    @PreetaAcharya

    5 жыл бұрын

    Elaine Leung hi there! A concentration declaration is just declaring your major! You do it in the spring semester of your sophomore year so that you have time to decide what field you really have an interest in. The one-on-one’s are really just you and your professor in their office. With Chinese they were just more pronunciation practice with the textbook, but in Korean we just have conversations about our lives lol so my Korean professors know a lot about what’s going on in my life. During orgo lab you can always ask your TA questions but keep in mind there are also 15+ other students who may have questions as well. There’s also a rush to get things done in orgo lab so you want to be prepared when you come in. When writing the lab report, you write a draft and then turn it in so that your TA can write corrections and then use their corrections to write your final draft. You can almost always get an A with corrections but it also means spending more time on it so getting an A initially is still better. The lab report I worked on in this video probably took me around 15 hours. And I think that’s pretty average.

  • @PreetaAcharya

    @PreetaAcharya

    5 жыл бұрын

    Katrina Morgan I chose to take them at different times. I started with Korean in Freshman year, heard a lot about how amazing the Chinese department is and decided to take Chinese alongside Korean sophomore year. There are East Asian Studies/Program Certificates But they require an independent project alongside the classes and I’ve heard from others that certificates don’t really count for much outside of Princeton. So, trying to tie East Asia into my neuroscience thesis or writing an independent paper on East Asia seemed like too much work given that I just enjoy learning the languages. Tl;dr: I chose to take them out of interest but you can do it with the goal of an East Asian Studies Certificate in mind!
