A Water Filter For Home Emergencies - from Membrane Solutions

A grid down emergency is something that we all fear and not being able to get water is the biggest fear of all. Berkey filters are expensive and not all of us can afford them. In a previous video I showed you how to make your own Berkey style filter for a fraction of the cost, but here in this video I show you a filter you can purchase for $46.00 (or less) that will not only do the same thing, but will handle more situations. Whether you are at home, traveling in your RV, enjoying a cabin in the woods or camping, this filter from Membrane Solutions will make your drinking water safe.

Getting out on the road is what Linda and I love to do with our converted cargo trailer camper. We're part time nomads and the nomadic lifestyle suits us to a Tee. Whether your RV is a camper van, camp trailer, travel trailer, motorhome or just a car and a tent, there's going to be something interesting for you in the videos we produce. Back roads and overlanding are part of what we do while exploring the western states for beautiful, peaceful and sometimes remote places to camp on BLM and National Forest land (public land). Taking care of ourselves as much as possible and doing our own repairs is a must because we travel on a fixed income and a limited budget. If your into being off-grid and boondocking, or doing dispersed camping whenever possible then you'll appreciate the discussions on batteries, solar panels and solar chargers or power stations and 12v refrigeration. Come on along, we're happy to have your company!

I use a similar filter at my off grid cabin. Instead of attaching the filter to the water bladder with the kit I've attached the filter to a 5 gallon blue water jug lid and filter the water into a large 5 gallon drinking water bottle. Once the water bottle is filled I use a battery operated spout and I have clean running water. I can filter about 5 gallons at a time.

Florida water, for us, seems to have so much "treatment" that what is called safe water should be filtered at least once more. It is hard to tell if the water is coming out of a swimming pool or heading into one. Thanks for venturing out in the cold for this video. I would fill a container, run back inside for warmth, and then worry about a filter. Thanks again!

Thanks for commenting, Jim. Sometimes our water here at home smells strongly of chlorine and when it does we filter it. You can just let it sit too and the chorine, being a gas, will dissipate after a couple of hours.

Careful with those filters when it's below 32F. The filter material, the membrane can freeze and not do it's job, and break easily..It's how most people break their filters..If your out in the freezing weather and the filter is wet, keep the filter itself close up against your body, under your coat/clothing..They can get expensive, just a helpful membrane solution...

I have several filters for emergencys in case one fails or gets frozen . I recently purchased a five gallon Lifesaver filter tote and a 24 oz Grayl filter. I have a creek on my property that runs clear. It's spring filled and runs year around. I was going to buy a storage tank just in case, but it would freeze in the winter. The Grayl and the Lifesaver also remove 99.99 % of viruses in addition to bacteria. They are pricey but I got them each at 20% discounts for Black Friday.

I really enjoyed this video. Back in 2011, 20 minutes after I arrived at a hotel on the bay in San Diego the power shut off from Yuma, to Mexico up to LA. I met with my daughter,, who was at a conference there. We were getting on an elevator to the basement to unload my cooler full of drink and food when I felt and unusual charge, I grabbed her and jumped out of the elevator. In the lobby we discovered all power was gone. Within an two hours people were becoming agitated and upset. We got the cooler and had food however people couldn't use ATM's, restaurants shut down, hotel generator very limited power. Power shut off at 4:30, by 7:30 people started fighting over limited sandwiches the hotel was offering. A very nice hotel. Flights were cancelled and I just so happen to have filled up before I arrived to the hotel...we had food and water AND I was able to drive her out of there the next morning. So much more to tell about this BUT it set into motion my preparedness.

One thing to remember when using these membrane filters is once used don’t let them freeze with any moisture inside. It ruins the filter. So if you are out in the wild with freezing temps at night you will need to store your filter where it won’t freeze at night like with you inside your sleeping bag. If out hiking in freezing temps store your wet filter inside your jacket where your body temp can keep the filter from freezing

The answer is none, James. Our little 6x10 came without brakes and we've never felt the need to add them, but we're very lightly loaded too, so that's to be considered.

Hello Wes, the regular ones that I used don't have charcoal, but for a few dollars more you can buy them already carbon impregnated for removing taste.

My brother drank some water in Montana that had bacteria in is and it made him sick. He was sick for 20 years and in the end it killed him. It did things to his tummy so that he could not eat food. He had to liquefy food to consume it and in the end, he almost starved to death because he could only drink a liquid nourishment prescribed or soda pop that was shaken until flat and then drunk warm.It was 20 years of very bad pain, cramping and dysentery like symptoms. In the end what killed him was, the bacteria caused cancer in his intestines. I tell you so that as many people as possible know, bacteria in the water is nothing to mess with! You should be filtering all the water that enters your body! I had an apartment years ago and the manager informed us all that they had found e coli in the water we were drinking one month AFTER they found it. Fortunately I had no issue as I only drank filtered water. Others were not as fortunate. So be safe and always filter your water before you drink it.

I'm so sorry about your brother and I'm amazed by how bad it got for him. Our municipal water is also full of pharmaceuticals and things like estrogen, which they think may be the cause of the much lower testosterone levels in men these days, which is down about 70+% from what it was in the 1970s.

Do you add chlorine in any of your water filtration methods? From what I've researched the diy berka you built would be the easiest to do, and 2-4 drops of chlorine per quart would make swamp water safe for drinking after running it thru that. I've seen you can even make your own chlorine from shock which can be stored in it's original form and make liquid chlorine as needed from it, giving you a couple of years of storage. It's my understanding a jug of chlorine from the store won't last that long. I believe boiling it would work instead of using chlorine, but if you don't have the means to build a fire or metal pots big enough to boil lot's of water chlorine would be your alternative. That doesn't cover uv light wands, or just leaving water in direct sunlight to kill off anything the diy berka doesn't remove that i believe makes it safe, but im more curious about storing say 30-40 gallons at a time and it would seem the easiest would be to boil or treat with chlorine. This membrane bag for emergency situations looks good, and it definitely wouldn't be bad to have in your car or backpack just in case for sure. Thanks for the review Rick!

Linda and I have used chlorine a lot in the past when we were sailing to other countries. We would use 6ccs per gallon if the water looked good and up to 10ccs if it didn't or we knew that it was unsafe. As long as we did that we were fine, but I got dysentery twice from not being careful.

Good question, Jerry, because I didn't die. Seriously though. I've used this type filter a lot with water that I know is contaminated and have learned to trust them. It's interesting to watch some of the hiking channels to see the water they sometimes have to drink. Cattle troughs, water with dead animals, etc. and these filters protect them.

In my opinion anyway, but what do I know... except the things my Mt Man outdoorsman Daddy taught me. Common sense & defensive safety measures being a few.
