Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

➳ This is a look into what it is like to bring your dog to a dog park in #Ottawa . Today we visited #BrucePit which is known to be the most 'aggressive' dog park in Ottawa. We have made a video on this before and it will be linked below, but long story short we don't believe this to be true.
We hope that this gave you an idea of what it is like to adventure with us, a little semi cut video to take you through one of our favourite parks!

I like Bruce pit, i take my German shep pup there. I think the biggest thing for the pit is time of day. If you get there during prime afternoon hours its really busy and can be problematic, but if you time it right its a great way to blow off steam and let the dog be a dog. Plus the right side of the park has nice stumps for some photos.

You are demonstrating great engagement with your dog. It shows your strong relationship with Frankie and how good of a leader you are to him. Notice how he looks to you for cues when he hear a noise or see a dog or want to climb an obstacle. That’s what all dog owners should strive for a healthy relationship with their canine.

Huskies, Malamutes, Samoyeds have a unique play style and they can come off strange to others. Northern Breeds normally have a very rough vocal way of playing, it can look like a fight to someone who's not used to it. You just have to watch for healthy play signals: 1) Unnecessary movements (play bows, rolling, roomies etc...) 2) Changing roles (switching who's on top or bottom when wrestling, who's running after who) 3) Self handicapping bite force and body force 4) Taking breaks to sniff, rest, or drink water. If you see all of those and the dog body language is happy then your good. My husky x malamute sounds like he's fighting sometimes during play with his husky buddy, but he's just vocal when he plays. I know him, his body language, the other husky, and those 4 key play criteria to know that he's playing.

@@FrankieToTheMoon my border collie has the same issue with all kinds of shepherds, german, dutch or mechels (dutch varieties litteraly translated, so not sure what they should be in English). It is because her natural pose is head and tail down a bit, a submissive pose, while she is not scared or submissive. So especially shepherds get triggered by that behavior and charge her. Not all agressively, but some are more aggressive, even to the surprise of their owners

We have a dog park in our apartment building and the first dogs our Aussie met were a husky and a German shepherd. I think because our pup has played with them since he was a puppy he's gotten used to their play style? They're all best buds :) I'll be interested to see how our pup responds to an unfamiliar husky or GSD!

  • @kat200214

@@chelseywitsberger3650 For sure! Early age exposure really helps, but sometimes even then some dogs just aren't into it. Like humans, dogs have their own unique personalities and likes/dislikes so they will tend to gravitate to those that play or act like them. But, sometimes you'll find some very funny opposite pairs! Not all Northern Breeds or GSD's have their rougher play styles of course, it's just a tendency in the breed.

I have an American Staffordshire Terrier (he is NOT a high-risk dog for the record), and we get so much 'hate' in the neighbourhood. I totally agree with you, training your dog for the dog park, knowing their behaviour/body language and when they've had enough. I'm RARELY on my phone, even though he is very social, I'm always watching his body language, I make sure he isn't too tense, isn't putting pressure on other dogs or whatever. I'm trying my hardest to make him show his true colours and more accepted by other people. But as soon as we pass someone, I get dirty looks, questions if he will bite, 'will there happen anything bad', 'he is very scary'... It honestly makes me sad. There are people out there with untrained dogs, aggresive dogs, dogs who bite, extremely dominant dogs, but NOT a stafford, who don't get comments at all. But my extremely well-trained, super social, super friendly and happy dog who happens to have a 'scary' appearance gets comments on a daily basis. It frustrates me. People don't know how to read body language of a dog, neither can they figure out if a dog is dominant or submissive. But still feel the need to ask me if he bites, meanwhile their dog is humping mine... Please train your dogs, do a little research. It helps :)

I totally understand that sentiment, I grew up with staffies and they are awesome beautiful dogs. That being said they where bred for strength and fighting, the concern isn’t a personal insult and asking is good. I ask people who have staffies (or any other larger dog breed) if their dog will bite, but especially staffy dogs. While I understand the stigma, and the stereotypes it would be ignorant for me to not be cautious especially with me having a small dog. I would rather be overly cautious than leave my dog with a traumatising and very dangerous situation. It’s not personal. I would recommend watching “Pitbull Victim Awareness” on KZread, some of the content is very disturbing but it’s so important to be aware of the situations people have had with the breed and understand the caution. Can staffies be good dogs? Yes. Can staffies be extremely dangerous dogs? Yes. Does the training of a good owner help a Staffy be less aggressive? No. Genetically dogs have been bred for a purpose and though some dogs won’t fit the cookie cutter design the history of the breed will be present in their build even when bred very well. There’s a reason why people know cattle dog breeds will nip, not all of them but most of them. It’s at least a possibility for all, even in show lines, if the dog was bred for this the dog can do it. Again, I’ve had staffies they are silly and sometimes very sweet dogs but I’m not going to risk my dogs safety for making a Staffy owner feel comfortable, and if the roles where reversed I think most people would agree. We gotta protect our pups

I take my 3 year old standard poodle to a 17 acre private dog park that looks similar to yours. She is a wonderful, wonderful dog and seems to know exactly which dogs she can play with. A number of dog parents are happy to see Lucy enter the park because they know their dog will have fun, get tired, and snooze the evening away. When Lucy finds a new playmate, I always tell the parent that Lucy is playing, that she is not being aggressive. I say this because she sounds like she's growling. There's often ear tugging and chest bumping involved. But, I want to make sure the parent agrees that it's play. And I'll point out a play bow or that their dog is going back for more wrestling and running. You were talking about breeds and knowing which breeds are playmates for your dog. I don't find that breed determines play potential, but temperament does. Lucy likes to play with Kobe, a vizsla, but she's not interested in the other viszlas in the park And, yes, certain temperaments tend to be breed specific. Lucy isn't a dominate dog and when she meets a dog that wants to dominate her, she puts her belly on the ground and looks at me. That's my cue to say "Lucy doesn't like that. How about if I take her in the other direction." That has never NOT worked. Some of Lucy's favorite friends are a Weimaraner, the viszla, another standard poodle, and a bunch of mixed breed dogs. My dog park does a temperament check when a new dog joins. It's a private dog park and members pay. It's worth every penny. I saw Frankie play bow to the first dog you encountered. Lucy does that a lot. She also does the big stare down. Sometimes the other dog declines. We walk with a couple of other dogs and their parents--an 11 year old Siberian husky and a mixed breed small dog with short legs and a barrel shaped body. Lucy doesn't play with these or the gentle pit bull or English setter that often join us. But she's tuned into them. Poodles, of course, are very smart, but they are also very athletic. I love that she gets to exercise her brain and her body. I also like how she checks in with me. And, I envy the fact that Frankie is so great at checking in with you. Lucy's pretty good at recall but Frankie has her beat. I really enjoyed this video. Thanks for posting it.

Hey! I love your vids and really think you're right that with dog parks a lot of it is about building engagement with your dog first, but also knowing when your dog is tired and done for the day :). I have a collie/ shepherd mix, whose litter mates also likely have some husky in them (different fathers). Upon doing some research when prepping for my own pup to be home, I learned that GSDs, Huskies and collies all tend to be 'mouthy' players. With my girl she *can* play with little dogs or dogs that prefer a polite play style (because I went out of my way to teach her how with the help of the neighbors dogs), but she much prefers to let loose after a polite greeting and stick her sister's whole head in her mouth/ growl and grumble when given the chance. That can be very rude for dogs. It also may be due to the body signals these types of dogs give off just due to their breed appearance. Upright ears, tails and "staring" can all be signs of standoffishness or aggression to other dogs, and so if the dog isn't super well socialized to these breeds they may actually come across as scary even if they are not giving any overt signals that they mean the dog harm! coupled with play style and general energy levels of these breeds, it might be that Frankie just finds them overwhelming, and can't get a good read on their body language enough to feel truly comfy.

In my dog park there's sometimes a "husky meet up" and it's just best to avoid going in there because all the huskies will gang up on the poor dog who isn't one. I had an old englesh sheep dog and a Boston Terrier at the same time the little one prefers to walk along with me or a group instead of playing with other dogs which got me into the habit, while the sheep dog loved to play but would also come and check in then go back to play, He was very chill but I did knowtes that 'the mash pit' is a very accurate term for that one spot all the owners hang out. The dogs just bounce the energy around and wind each other up. We where very lucky that our cor group was very aware of thare dogs and didn't use it as the main source of exercise, which I think is what some owners do but a dog needs structure as well as play time.

Australian Shepherds are gorgeous but they are also increasingly protective as they get older. My father was a natural Doberman breeder in his late twenties and he told me a tale of how his Australian Shepherd would terrorise my mother in their first six months together. He would bark and threaten to bite. They moved to Australia and my beloved grandparents kept him for company, he only had an issue with my mum out of jealousy. He lived a long and happy life in Europe. When my father bred Dobermans, it taught my mother who was not allowed to have animals in her youth, love towards canines. They loved her energy and compasssion. She loved how they protected the family and made it evident how much she loved and appreciated them. My father's dogs and my own dogs have always adored my mother. She is a dog matriach.

I have a full size aussie and he also does not gel the best with german shepherds. I've noticed that the one we know tends to try to dominate him if he stops running. My theory is that the type of rough aussie play is interpreted as a ploy for dominance and the german shepherd doesn't like that very much. My dog tolerates a lot from other dogs, but he does not like being humped/mounted. He gets that a lot from larger dogs, especially poodles. Again, I think that my guy's play seems like a fight for dominance, and the more stubborn/sassy breeds don't take well to that (which would include huskies and somoyeds). Aussie play is just way different than any other kind of play I've seen. It can seem like aggression and it seems like most large dogs don't enjoy being herded. I've noticed that the bully breeds love to play with him though. The best play friends we ever met at a dog park were a pair of pitbull mixes and an english bulldog. They could take the rough play and loved that DaVinci could also take a hit and give it right back. I'm curious what distance you guys typically walk at your parks. We have some trailed off-leash dog parks here in Minnesota, but the trail lengths seem short to me.

Hey Joey! Really love your videos and Frankie is the cutest Aussie ever! I was wondering if you could help me out, last year I got a puppy and I've been training him since, but he's having some trouble with a few commands off leash. Every day I take him to the dog park and he's pretty good off leash, always checking on me and staying close but when it comes to recall or leave it we struggle a little. Do you have any tips? Thank you so much, actually Frankie reminds me a lot of my doggo Kylo, Big fan from Mexico! 🇲🇽

I just started watching your channel yesterday and I wanted to know how you trained Frankie to be around the house freely? I have a 5 month old Aussie named Oakley and he is very hyper when babies come around which I think is very cute but he sometimes get a little too hyper and will pee or he will jump on them. I don’t know if you have done training with this yet but if you have would be helpful. 😊

The reason most dogs have problems with Samoyeds and huskies is that their tail naturally curves up, most dogs tend to see this as dominance. Also designer dogs like chows and sharpeis get this because their ears and/or tails are hard to read. (Take this with a grain of salt i'm not 100% sure, this is what I was taught.) With GSDs it's mostly the ones that aren't trained well that get into trouble because they're very protective naturally. I get into a lot of trouble with my GSD because he plays 'rough' in the eyes of other dog owners, the only breed that gets GSDs are GSDs :')

Hello from the Okanagan in BC! That's a lovely dog park, similar to what we have here too. I really loved the video and how Frankie is in tune to your voice. I have a 2-year-old Siberian husky. Here in the Okanagan, one of the off-leash parks is at the beach, however, it is not a fenced-in park. With our high temps of plus 30 degrees at this time of year, I'd love to take my dog there but she can't be trusted off-leash, and she runs all over the place ignoring me. I'd like to take her there and just sit and relax with her like others do with their dogs, but she won't have it. She won't play in the lake even with all the fur to cool off. Help!?

I love that Frankie is so well trained. You do a fantastic job with him! My only concern here is that you are letting him run up on people and their unleashed dogs in the woods. This is incredibly dangerous. Not just for other people who have no idea who your dog is (obviously he's a good boy but someone unfamiliar with him such as the guy who called him trouble - will not know this) - but for Frankie and YOU because you have no clue how other dogs will react to him bolting towards them. This is terrifying for me to watch as a dog owner as I train my dogs to NEVER approach any dog ever, whether unleashed or leashed because it is completely unsafe. Please please work on this, for both of your safety!

@@eric986 Agreed. While I know that they are in a dog park and seeing dogs running freely is normal, he was clearly encouraging Frankie to run up on the other free roaming dogs without the owner's clear permission. Obviously no one should have their aggressive dog in a public place like this, but people don't always think or know their dog is aggressive until a situation arises where they are triggered. Just want Frankie and all other dogs to be safe!

Can't believe these people said Frankie looks like trouble... I have a Japanese spitz, so a little smaller than a mini-aussie and he's also wary of German shepherds and Huskies. I think it's because they don't measure their strength and he's been trampled and nipped at a few times. When they are off leash at dog parks and when they run for you or your dog it's difficult to avoid them and then my dog looks like the bad one when he shows his teeth out of fear.
