A Volvo 850 R Story

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

A video I made showing the chronological progress repairing my 850R and bringing it back to life to be enjoyed that way it was intended. It started with the discovery of a lost cylinder which turned out to be a burnt exhaust valve. Instead of getting rid of the car or leaving it neglected, I decided to try and repair it myself. Before this, I've had little experience working on cars so this was a great learning process for me.
While repairing the head, I decided now was a great time to add some performance parts while the engine bay was apart. Parts added were larger blue injectors, larger 16t turbo, full exhaust system, all new maintenance items, intake, front mount intercooler, big brake kit, full suspension, springs, sway bars, etc.
But, this video was made a while ago. I didn't publish it because the car has since gone through another round of upgrades since making this video; M56 manual swap, larger hybrid k24 turbo, even larger 900cc Deatschwerks injectors, Quaife LSD, etc. I was planning on editing it again to include the new changes. But, once again...the car is currently going through another, third, round of changes and I've realized I will never be done or satisfied with this "project". Therefore, I decided to publish this video as it is and have some more Volvo content for all Volvoheads out there.
Thank you to everyone who helped, commented, provided tips, sold me parts, lent a hand, etc. I really learned a ton in the process and I'm very appreciative. Big thanks to all who's name you saw in the engine bay shot. Big thanks to Robert DIY for his countless 850 videos. And big thanks to FCP Euro who sponsored a part of this build, I appreciate you guys, your parts, and your support!
Enjoy!

When I work on my 850T5 people comment on how do I know how to do all these repairs, I always say" I'm only as smart as all the people I learned from. Awesome project and nice that you acknowledge all the great 850 gurus that help all of us with these fantastic cars. Without Robert DIY and many others on the great forums, I think there would be many more 850's in the junkyard :-((

I totally agree! Every single time I had an issue, I would look it up online and I'll find Robert coming in clutch with a video on it. From how to figure out what's your radio code to how to open a stuck gas tank door to doing an entire head gasket job lol. Can't thank these online guys enough, the least I could do was put their online name as a sticker on my ecu box. Thank you very much for watching!

Thank you Cole, that really means a lot. I wish I had better equipment and stuff and some better skills for editing and grading and what not to make it even better but I worked within my limits. The dash ding was probably my favorite part! Those few seconds really captured the long, frustrating process of this build and the reward with getting it back up and running. Initially it wouldn't start and I had no idea why. Naturally I started second guessing all my work. But it turned out to be the camshaft position sensor that just went bad. As soon as I got a replacement in it fired right up and we were back in business. Thank you for watching!

I bought a '97 850R brand new with 87 miles on it. At 142k a short on the fan caused an engine fire that destroyed the car, a freak 1 in a million chance according to Volvo USA. Volvo USA offered me a whole $2,000 off a new car. Needless to say I wasn't happy. I miss that car to this day. White on your car looks really nice.

Currently my Butter sits idle for my focus is on my 99 V70 R wagon in Lazer blue just got it back from a local shop here in Northern California...(not a Volvo shop) it's running pretty darn good but time will tell. Hopefully will get to the Butter soon with the biggest fix is a bad tranny not sure what route i will take on this one and i am leaning towards more stock with mild mods. Ian Carpenter Hey anything is better than nothing. Photos work just as good as video and I’ll be interested to see that process. Because you always see people modifying turbo cars, you never see how people modify NA cars. And in your case it’s actually converting an NA to a T5. Your car sounds like it rips!

@@5versus826 Thanks man. It hauls ass. I beat a tuned 535 that was the fastest car at my school before a I beat him. The NA to Turbo conversion is simple in concept but involves a lot of labor. Have to swap over engine, engine harness, and fuel system including the fuel tank. I would only ever do it again on a perfect condition NA car. It was worth it though to turn my first car into my dream car.

Thank you and thanks for watching. Yes, I got the head machined and I replaced the one exhaust valve that had a nice chunk of metal missing from it lol. Although, I wish I would have spend some more time and effort properly "rebuilding" the head before I put it back on. For example, I wish I re did the valve seals because those seemed to be worn. Every morning when I start the car, a little smoke exits the exhaust for a few minutes until it's warmed up. That is oil that found its way into the cylinders overnight by way of worn valve seals. As soon as I start it up in the morning, that oil gets burned off and exits the exhaust. Once the car is warmed up throughout the day, you don't see the smoke anymore. But that is very indicative of worn valve seals.
