He created a place about 45 years ago where people found the voices of opera as well as the amazing expression of emotion that opera creates. In college in 1981, my roommate would say, "That man got his thumb stuck in the door again." But my love of his voice never lessened.

This song is so honest and generous. Of course, the vocal faculty and that natural musical intuition is impressive. She learned her fabulous technique from the great Joan Sutherland, because at the beginning of her career her voice sounded worse and more difficult. She showed him.

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but while in his youth Luciano would hold notes longer (showing off IMO), at the point in his career when this concert was held, his tone, his technique, and his passion were at their peak.

Most of the people who have reacted to this video interrupt it, and it’s very frustrating because they’re losing a lot by doing that. Congratulations for having the wisdom not to do so. You have a very nice personality and manner, too.

I loved your reaction. Luciano Pavarotti acted this role in the opera "Turandot" many times. In this concert, his facial expressions at the end where he sings "I will win, I will win, I will win" are part of the act. I've watched many operas on KZread, many with English subtitles so you know WHAT its about. Start with lighter, comical operas like The Barber of Seville (Rossini) and The Marriage of Figaro (Mozart). Then go see an opera live. You will love it.

I love that opera (the first 3/4 of it), but really dislike this aria because I know what it means. What is it? Turndot the Princess of China is terrified of love and sex, and has been executing any prince who wants to marry her but cannot answer three riddles. Turns out she was terrified as a little girl whe she heard the story of a princess a thousand years ago who was raped in the same palace where she lives. Finally, a prince guesses her riddles and she must marry him. But he gives her one chance: She won’t have to if overnight she can discover the name of that prince. (And then she gets to kill him.) That gives Princess Turandot the chance to torture anyone who might know the name. The prince (whose name, BTW, is Calaf), sings the aria just before sunrise. “Nessum dorma” means “No one sleeps.” That’s because everyone is being tortured. He seems happy because his name has not been discovered. It doesn’t really seem to bother him that everyone is being tortured. (Yuk!) He sings about their future lovemaking. (He knows the story of the ancient rape and its traumatic effect on Turandot, but machts nichts to him!) That triumphant last word (“Vincera, Vincera”) “I shall win!” Concludes a line that means “As soon as the sun rises, I win!” A brilliant and thrilling operatic moment, but what it really wins is the right to have forced sex (I.e., rape) with a woman who is terrified of that above all else. (Double yuk!) I cannot get away from that meaning whenever I hear the story. I guess I should tell how the story wraps up. A little slave girl named Liu is one of the only two people who know Calaf’s name. Turandot finds her and starts to torture Liu, who manages to grab a weapon and kills herself out of fear she will succumb to torture and reveal Calaf’s name. Turandot is stunned to see a young woman kill herself for the sake of a man she is hopelessly in love with. The trouble with this opera is that the story at this point is unconvincing. (Also, at this point the composer died of cancer. A replacement composer named Franco Alfano finished it.) Turandot decides that if Liu will die for love, there must be something good about love after all. She proclaims “I know his name! His name is … LOVE!” She suddenly falls into his arms, and everyone rejoices. End of opera. A happy ending! (Well, sort of. The fact is that those two will soon be the rulers of China (Daddy the Emperor is super-old) and they are utterly selfish super-narsicists who don’t give a crap if the people are tortured.) (More yuk!)

@@gailwebb9619 Beautifully sung, yes. I enjoy that voice, but I just cannot get past the fact that the aria glorifies the singer’s prospect of committing rape. As I said, I love most of the opera, and think Domingo did it better, and Bjorling beat them both.
