While Monte Alban was the political center of the Zapotecs, Mitla was the religious center. Mitla means “Place of the Dead”. It is the 2nd most important archaeological site in the state of Oaxaca.
Mitla is known for its columns, tombs, and a church built on top of the ruins. San Pablo Villa de Mitla (the name of the town containing the archaeological zone of Mitla) is one of Mexico’s Pueblos Magicos and you'll see tuktuks, a colorful main square and of course the archaeological zona of Mitla.
