    The mall developer actually hated the term "mall" a local radio personality got hauled over the coals when he on air referred to it as Carousel MALL rather than Carousel Center. I also was in Pyramid's main office when Bob Congel threw a fit when Best Buy decided to open a store a few miles away from the mall on Eire Blvd. in Dewitt.

    I worked at the Ruby Tuesday that use to be in there about 18 years ago. We smoked weed in the back corridors and you can get very lost back there. One time we started in the parking garage in the basement and ended up behind one of the movie theaters that was playing Jurassic Park. We actually made a map to get back up there so we could sneak in and watch movies. Lol.

    I have family in Syracuse so I've been going there every year my entire life. Went to Destiny each trip since it opened. We always loved going. And I always get lost and can never find my way back to the right parking garage. It's sad that the lenders didn't give the mall owners a break on their payments during COVID.

    To be honest, this video may be a matter of timing. Meaning, the time of day or if there were events were going on elsewhere. I was there a couple of months ago and it was pretty busy. What helps the mall is the fact many Canadians come to the mall in normal times and with the border opening up, things will steadily get back to “normal”. By the way, it is the 8th biggest shopping center in the US and the biggest in NY State.

    I was wondering if you were going to cover this mall when I saw your previous videos featuring Driver's Village, etc. I live less than an hour from this mall. I'm old enough to remember the other Syracuse malls in their prime and the beginnings of this Carousel Mall. I rode that very same carousel before it existed inside the mall, back when it was at a little amusement park called Roseland Park. In my late teens/early 20's, I went to the Carousel Mall every weekend. I'm not a fan of its expansion and I feel it's too big for its own good now. Crime is also seeping into the mall now too. Keep up the great mall videos--dead or alive, I enjoy living the mall experience through your videos! Side note: I attended college in Raleigh, NC and used to work at Crabtree Mall! I love malls and it's sad to see so many dying as the retail environment changes and evolves.

    Syracuse isn't that big a city, and I wonder if the whole area around it could possibly support it. I live in the Rochester, NY area and I remember the worry that everyone would head to Syracuse to shop. It probably never happened, and the Rochester area over built malls but nothing this big. Two of the Rochester malls are now mostly history. One is history, and one has lost all its anchors. Part of it is being redeveloped by the local university. Now Amazon is moving in building several very large buildings. Where will it end, history will tell us.

  • @CatTrax

    @CatTrax

    @@iworkout6912 Amazon's building a fulfillment center just a 15 minute drive from Destiny Mall too. It'll be interesting to see how this impacts Destiny Mall as well--assuming Pyramid Co. can dig itself out of its own hole and keep the mall alive. Part of Destiny's struggle right now is because of the Canadian border being closed to just a trickle. Destiny was a tourist stop for Canadians prior to the uh, 2020 issue and a huge customer base for the mall.

Also it seems almost every month theres a random incident involving guns. One recently people were told to shelter in place until things were safe and clear. Its sad... 10 years ago i saw more Troopers and now rarely if ever see an actual cop which a mall this size should have cops in every wing to keep it safe. Hi, I’m giving an update even though I already posted on this video. As of 2022 unless I am wrong about the switch I might be destiny USA is the last shopping mall in the area all but Destiny in the Syracuse New York area have gone out of business. I remember back in the day which I’ve never been to because it’s before my time we had a pen can mall over in Cicero. I hear of Tri-County Mall, which used to be in Baldwinsville. I heard a Fayetteville Mall. There’s a shopping center. I will work at now Seneca mall which is a strip type mall outdoor mall it’s not a mall like Destiny in enclosed mall. Then we had great Northern Mall as of recently it went out of business November 20, 2022 waiting to become a lifestyle center and then we had shopping town mall when I mean all of them I mean every single mall except for Destiny has gone out of business over the years, nothing I’ll pick him up and shop in town and they were supposed to become district east and we are awaiting the spring time to see if great northern is going to become of anything. The only thing left a Great Northern as a storage for Silletti housing almost all of the stores that used to be in there because they didn’t want to go anywhere because they were recently kicked out in November 2022 and I had nowhere to go at the time and a dunk and Bright furniture store. This is crazy this massive behemoth of a mall carousel destiny USA I’m going to keep calling it killed everybody. It killed off every single mall in the area from the 80s all the way up till great Northern Mall in 2022. We did get a hobby lobby which was in the circuit city Best Buy went out of business and became a Dick’s Sporting Goods warehouse sale, nothing has ever become of JCPenney as it’s abandoned. Lord and Taylor went out of business leaving if you wanna call them anchors one, original anchor Macy’s as we had Macy’s, Lord and Taylor and the Bon Ton JCPenney as banker stores, but only have Macy’s left out of all the original carousel anchors, but am I opinion you can say Burlington Coat Factory is an anchor as I think you said that space with a junior anchor you can call Dick’s Sporting Goods and anchor store then you can still call Macy’s the original anchor. I don’t know how this mall is holding on since the pandemic blocking every Canadian from coming to the mall as we highly relied on Canadians to come to the mall but without them I don’t know how this place is struggling to stay alive. But it’s crazy. This massive place you can go to eat you can go shopping. You can go play at Dave & Buster’s or Apex you can walk the top of the canyon in wonderworks or you can go take a nap over in the hotel and come back for the more. This is crazy who would ever think you’d be able to live eat sleep and play right there in the skinny mall. Now the hotel is mainly for the Canadians. What are you as Americans can go stay there too but it’s mainly for the Canadians that come in to town and have nowhere to stay. We’re trying to attract them into the mall. Maybe they’ll come in and grab a bite to eat come grab some American clothing that they don’t have in Canada or even go over if they’re coming in the summertime to go see the Syracuse Mets play across the street. This is truly Syracuse is Destiny and it’s the only mall left in Syracuse now I could be wrong, and there could be others going out towards Rochester and Buffalo and then in to Albany and into the city New York City but in the driving distance that I’m ever gonna be able to get to this is it for Syracuse Destiny one they were built in 1990 born in the 90s and they’re holding on into the 2000 2022 that was a Mall I went to buy the baby with my grandma as she was a bus driver and she had time between 9 AM and 2 o’clock instant mall that I used to go to at a 30 year old in 2022 and if I ever have kids yes I will definitely take my kids to the mall this will also be there Destiny.

    You know, I really like the video of the mall, but why all the history? We are planning to visit there this summer, and are way more interested in the current occupants, rather than the dozens of stores that once leased there. I can tell that we are going to be very tired at the end of that day, and a good dinner, followed by a long drive home will be exhausting. Planned on staying overnight, until we got the hotel rates. Oh well, should be an interesting day trip. Oh yeah, one question…why does the mall look predominantly vacant? Were you filming before the mall opened for the day?

    So a couple things. When this was filmed is addressed in the video. He mentions that he went specifically before operating hours because this mall is particularly busy most days and it would not have made for great footage showcasing the actual design and architecture of the place. At peak hours its really not an ideal place to film anything because it's usually pretty busy and people tend to walk fast and don't want you in their way. Secondly, regarding the history vs. current tenants thing: this channel seems to be one of many that have a particular interest in dead malls, liminal spaces, general "post-consumerist" spaces (the vaporwave music throughout the video being a dead giveaway.) Usually people into this kind of thing are more interested in diving into the history and current state of places like this and how they compare to the great heyday of malls from the mid 80s to late 90s because it has a very particular atmosphere and aesthetic. These videos generally aren't for people just looking to be advertised to to see if a genuine shopping trip is worth their time. Mostly for just us nerdy weirdos who like to wander in old and storied places that happen to be empty now. Luckily, Destiny is one of the very few malls like this that doesn't exactly fit that description and is still pretty booming today! Hope that helps explain.

There's been some changes from your video Sprint is no longer there as they merge and became T-Mobile and they are now one storm anymore there was a Sprint store by the abandoned at the time of your video circuit City but then that store closed down and the T-Mobile in the food court closed down and then they open the one T-Mobile store in the mall after the T-Mobile Sprint merger. I'm not sure how many acres destiny has now I would say one anchor but some people might say too if you include Dick's sporting goods left but I say one out of the original five if you count Best buy that were there. Sadly over the years Best buy Lord and Taylor and JCPenney's have all gone out of business at the mall. We for a very very very short amount of time I think I was Sears hardware had a mini Sears store in the mall but then you know the problems with Sears it went out of business not even I think 3 months open before it closed. This mall used to have a kahunaville restaurant a Comp USA against All odds used to be downstairs in the basement across from the kahuna Villa restaurant but then decided to move upstairs and got to take over Express when the Red Express store went out of business at the mall. This mall has too many stores for me to remember and tell what is still currently in business right now but all I can say is the only two anchor stores keeping this model alive along with the movies theater is Dick's sporting goods and Macy's. I do remember going to this mall as a kid with my aunt we used to go to the Ames department store. I always wondered if Ames was ever hills back in the day and according to you and your video yes or was. Ames would change hands a number of times after it went out of business becoming sports authority and now most recently at home. This mom wants hosted a post office which is now a liquor store it had a Ruby Tuesday's which is now a seafood restaurant it had a Hooters restaurant which is now some Japanese place and had a who knows pizzeria which is now 110 grill and over the years it had a Wendy's but the Wendy's across the street put it out of business and became Burger King and had a Boston market and it had a Popeyes. Like I said the small is too large for me to even say which stores went out of business and had come and gone over the years we even had a Microsoft store which basically was a Windows based Apple store if you were to think about it where just like how Apple

    As of the date on this comment, the mall is worth less than 1/3 of the debt on it and the occupancy rate is below 60%. If the hard times aren't here, they be close. Ironic for the mall that killed downtown retail--Galleries is now an office building--and other Syracuse are malls.

    the mall was great but it got dangerous after dark...a lot of the places shown in the video are now gone, Best Buy being one of them...this mall destroyed all the smaller malls in the area...Great Northern closed just last year and they were built at the same time....Destiny swallowed up everything.....now online is swallowing up Destiny

    As I've stated over on Discord, another couple of things that may hurt Destiny could be the proposed redevelopment plans for Shoppingtown and particularly I-81 being rerouted to follow I-481. And with Shoppingtown being right off 481, it could draw tenants from Destiny. Time will tell.

    Shoppingtown Mall is not a threat. Shoppingtown is no more. It closed down completely this year.

    Just visited there. Syracuse could be a beautiful city with a vibrant downtown in beautiful heritage buildings. Instead, it has a main street of empty buildings and run down businesses and a depressing giant out dated and semi vacant monster of a mall. Made the long hike to Margaritaville from the entrance we used. Thought hey, that's usually a fun themed place. Was so depressing and empty once we arrived. Felt downtrodden as we searched for a decent place to eat and the long walk between options. Another thing... Every change in level for someone confined to wheelchair or mobility scooter meant going all the way back to the center elevators and back. We did this twice until discovering the elevators in the canyon section. Think that during operating hours it would have made for lots of people? Wednesday afternoon last week and the place looked just like your video. Dead, empty, quiet, depressing.
